feed it mashed up chick peas, through an eye dropper and keep it warm.

btw, NEVER pick up a baby bird straight away. now the mother will abandon it! always wait and hour, then go back and see if the mother has retrieved it in future

hmm yeah you probably shouldn't have taken it in like that, but now that you have, just do some research and do the best you can. i'd be more specific, but i'm not too sure myself.

yeah, the best thing you should have done was to leave it outside.
Find a nest and put the bird in there, and maybe check up on it time to time.

Handling a baby bird will not cause the parents to abandon it. Almost all birds have a very poor sense of smell. But raccoons, foxes and other predators have a very good sense of smell. You may be leaving a trail directly to the nest for these hungry animals.

We know you want to take the baby birds inside, put them in a warm box, feed them milk and bread with an eye-dropper and watch them grow up. Mother nature and the U.S. Government don't want you to do this. It is illegal (really!). Only licensed wildlife rehabilitators are authorized to handle wild birds.

If it is extremely obvious that a bird has fallen from a nest and is far too young to survive, you may place it back into the nest. If the nest blew down, place what is left of the nest and the babies in a small berry basket and hang it near the original nest. The parents may return to feed the young.

In fact, many birds are capable of walking and staying close to their mother almost from the moment they hatch. These species are called "precocial." They hatch with their eyes open and are down-covered. Quail, grouse, ducks, gulls, terns and shorebirds are precocial.

The opposite of precocial is altricial. These birds hatch in a helpless condition and depend on their parents. Robins, cardinals, bluebirds and most songbirds are altricial. These are the birds we usually discover on the ground.

I tried to handle an abadoned baby bird last year but when I was trying to help it fly, it flew on our roof. I had my kid neighbors looking in the dirt for worms.. haha. Dustin(?) seems to have good information there, just be careful you don't get caught with it.

My science teacher says that it's important to leave them where you found it because it's normal for baby birds to fall out of there nest when they're learning how to fly. My advice is put it back where you found it because i'm sure the babies mommy is looking for it or if you can find the nest that it fell out of then put it in the nest. Although i would recommend it since you might put it in the wrong nest.

Wow, that dustin kid totally got like everything u need.

I'd totally listen to what he said and do that. I was going to say you shouldn't have touched it, I thought that a bird wouldn't go back to it if it had another smell on it.
I guess thats not true.
Thats fun!

i remember when i was little i would chase wounded birds all around the neighborhood until i finally found them... i would keep them in a box with that weird mouse bedding, a large shallow dish of water [large in case they want to play in it! lol] and some bird seeds scattered all around, with pebbles too...

but its a baby! i think the best bet would be to find the nest and place it back in..

yea , feed it stuff like that ><;

should have just left it alone, u touching it will most likely make the mother abandon it cuz it has ur scent on it . try to find the nest and put it back it and hope the mother takes it back.

Things you could do...
1.) Bring it back outside and find a nest so that the bird will be taken cared of...
2.) Make a nest out of a box and grass...and feed it berries until you know it can eat something else other than worms....
3.) Go back and put it where you found it..

Is it dead yet ?

We found one and it was also bald. My mom had this oven mitten that looked like a bird and we fed him smashed up lemon bread with that. He kind of got to bloated and died somehow.. I can't remember. Don't feed it too much ( that's if it's still alive)

I don't think you should of picked it up, it probably fell outta the nest. The mother won't want it now because it has ur scent all over it. But google it on how you take care of a baby bird and all. Good Luck happy.gif
---edit----
wait i just read what dahding wrote....it's illegal? lol. Well i guess you should take it to the animal shelter or somethan..or you know what...put it back in it's nest if you can find it.

Remember, there are certain food that can kill a bird, esp. when you buy worms from the market. YOU should find worms somewhere but no in the market because they add some chemical to the worm .. . put the birds back in the orginal place until the mama never comes back .. then you'll be the mama.

You're not supposed to take baby birds when you're not certain about it's condition or situation!
The bird was probably in a nest above and the bird just fell out of its nest because of excercising its legs or trying to fly.
You must look for those three signs first; there are neighboring birds that look like that infant bird, a nest in a tree above the area you found the bird, or if there was distant squaking (it could be the mother).
If all three of those are missing then you take it inside.

i have an idea!

go find a nest and put the bird in it!

that way the nest's current owners will abandon it,

and the bird will die!

what fun!

You can call some type of animal shelter hotline and ask for tips on what to do. Keep it in a soft warm place until you find out what to do. Go here.
