i wanted to get some opinions on downloading music illegally from the internet. Does it really hurt the artists or just the music industry? Also, should it be legal. I'd love to know what you think.

I think it should cost money to download even though I do the oppisite all the time. The artist really dont make that much off of the CDs. Touring is where its at.

yes, downloading music should be legal. i don't know the exact figures, but everyone i know uses it for sampling. infact, since i started downloading, i've found tons of new artists and then bought their cds. in the past two years i've bought 50+ cds. the record industry is doing badly because the mainstream music they're churning out sucks.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. I'm sorry they are so mad about it, and this is mean, but they already have millions of dollars, do they really need more? And its not like people are gonna stop buying cds altogether..
the only thing i hate is the declining sales for the people who arent millionaires that run the cd stores. |

I don't think it's a huge deal.
A lot of people still buy CDs. More people than you would think. |

yeah and now with iPods, you know ... people are buying CDs from them and stuff and so many people want in on iPods so then .. CDs are going to be on sale .. so then if I sample music right now, I won't waste money.

Cd companys are getting so mad because the songs the artist are being given away on the internet. But when i download music i usually go and buy the cd. but if i thought a cd would be good, and i downloaded some songs and found out they arent as good as i thought, i would of just save 10-20$ by downloading it rather then automatically buying the cd then finding out the singer sux. So for me, downloading music should be fine, as long as long as u end up going to but the cd if u like it, instead of downloading all the songs then making ur own cd (even thought i do that lol). Then maybe i should bring up companies as in Limewire, Morpheous, and ZemaZoo (if its still there) which cd companies are trying to sue because free songs are given away by other people.
Which in turn we take, upload, and bam we just *borrowed* music. So for me. downloading should be legal. |

i figure if i'm supporting the band by going to their concert, i deserve to own atleast three songs from them. i'd rather go see them at their shows and buy their merch so that i directly help them, instead of the money going through greedy record companies and Hot Topic BS.

downloading music is basically the same thing as making a copy of a cd that your friends has.

i am sure that it will hurt both the music industry and the artists personally. and i think it should not be legal because we are kinda stealing their music but it is ironic how i think it should be illegal but i download it myself. i am so bad.

I download legally.
I think that the artist have a lot of money, and people downloading all their music for free wouldn't hurt them, however, if it was legal, a lot more people would download (i know a lot already do), and less cds would be sold. There is already a downfall in sales. So, the artist looses money... So, no. They are just out there making money like everyone else, they just do it differently that most. |

i download from the 'net all the time but if the singer meant a lot to me and their album is worth buying, then i'll buy it. downloading music online for me, is just something that i can preview- to see how the song is and if it's good enough, then i'll purchase the album. i have had my share bad albums where only ONE song out of the entire cd was good. i think music downloads should be free. if you were really a fan of someone's, then you'll show your support in purchasing their album.

I think it should be legal. Hell, I wouldn't buy a CD if I'd only heard one or two songs from it on the radio.

if everyone began to download music illegally (which many do), then people would stop buying music which hurts the recording company because well, they wouldn't earn any money.

But they have tons of money already. I think as long as u have enough money to support yourself and live comfortably, you should be happy. people just get greedy. Which is not to say I don't want a huge house and a nice car ![]() ![]() |

If you didn't make it or buy it, it's not yours.
In essence it takes away money from the band and essentially the music you like. |

yes, it should be legal. it's just not right wasting money on a $20 CD if you only like a couple of songs
plus, its only the recording company that loses money, not the artists ![]() |
