I searched through the [entertainment] forum to see if a prior thread pertaining to the aforementioned subject had been made, and didn't see any.. soo.

Personally, I'm a book-worm. Always have been since I was younger (was an avid collecter of the The Berenstain Bears' books).

List your favorite books and/or authors.

Authors:
- Richard Wright
- Alice Sebold
- Dean Koontz
- Anne Rice
- Stephen King
- Sandra Brown

Books:
- Native Son by Richard Wright
- Good In Bed by Jennifer Weiner
- From the Corner of His Eye by Dean Koontz
- The Big Picture by Douglas Kennedy
- White Hot by Sandra Brown

My grandma bought me those books a few Christmas' ago.
Honestly, I don't see how anyone can stand reading them, they're written so poorly and laskdjflkajsdfklj1 aalaksdjf.

You should check out some of the Sweet Vally High Senior Year books, now those are some entertaining books ;). Haha, the author stopped writing new ones for that novel years ago I think, but you can still find them in most bookstares. I still have that entire series, books 1-45; there are more after that I think, but I haven't looked around to see.

i didnt bother to read them, but i cant stand any of that kind of book, really. i dont mind half an hour books for entertainment, but they should at least but vaguely funny and well written. no fake drama shit for me. the left behind series was intolerably badly written as well

anyway, favorite authors:
-Tom Robbins
-Orson Scott Card
eh, i dont really have many favorite authors right now

at this point, im in a phase where ive read so many books at one time i cant keep them straight anymore, so any list i could put forth would not even begin to cover what i actually enjoyed.

i just finished the great gatsby and loved it though

For this year I decided to make a list of every book I read and/or reread, so I can see how many books I've read, and whatnot.

For school I probably read more books then I did after I was done with it. I was either bored in class, so I brought books to read, or I finished the required reading for my Lit and American Novel classes, so I just read books for enjoyment. I had this thing where I would read beyond the homework given (aka, read chapters 1-3) because well, I don't read a book, and just put it down until I have to read it again. So I always read the book the first two days I got it.

Well, except for the Scarlet Letter. The one book in my entire education thus far that I never read. I skimmed it for quizzes and such, but. yeah. Worst book, ever.

thats a good idea. i started a list once, but lost it before i had a chance to write down 4

i hate the particular chapter bit too. it just about killed me during the great gatsby, because unlike the other books we read this year, i actually liked it. but i had to go at the class's rate (which was fortunately fast since it was practically an AP class) because we get incredibly hard pop quizzes that are detailed enough that i wont rememebr if i read ahead, because of the way theyre set up. i read huck finn in the first couple of days, failed half the quizzes because of it, so i had to do well this time.

i read the scarlet letter last semester. TERRIBLE. i ...kind of read it. i would try to read it, but i actually could not pay attention at all, and so not have a clue what id read anyway. it was miserable

Haha, I read Huck Fin the first day I got it. I usually just skimmed the chapters before a quiz/test so I could remember inane details. For the most part, I usually have a good memory when it comes to books, but for anything else, I usually forget (especually during my senior year, when I was in my adv math/trig class; I could never remember specific formulas no matter what.)

What year are you in highschool?

im a sophmore, but im taking the junior language arts class

i have the same problem(or luck, as it occasionally happens) but th3e details were have to know are so inane that its ridiculous. a question on todays quiz was about how wilson said one thing repeatedly- what was it? so stupid

I can't remember much of what books I read during my sophomore year. That was my year of rebelling aka dropping out of all of my honors classes to piss off my parents.

I think we read some Greek Mythology, always a favorite of mine.
Oh, it was Othello we read. I remember, I got the only A +5 ec points.

I agree- The Scarlet Letter was a terrible book. It was the only book that I actually read through the whole way, and I didn't like it that much. And same here with the chapter thing, I usually go beyond the required reading, unless it's really boring or something.
Hah, my boyfriend and I were just having a talk similar to this earlier today on the train. Well, some of my favorite books are:
Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code- Dan Brown
Catcher in The Rye- J.D. Salinger
Of Mice and Men, The Pearl- John Steinbeck
Harry Potter- J.K. Rowling

Oh, I'm reading The Great Gatsby now, for an APUSH term project, and it seems interesting to far.

Aw, I loved reading the Oddysey.
Other books we read:
The Iliad
Antigone
Oedipus

I'm sure there were others; I can't remember them anymore.
That being said, I'm definitely making sure I register for either a ancient Roman Literature, or Greek Mythology Class for next semester.

Yeah, for Oedipus, we read from a book, and I believe Antigone was through the literature book.

Once you register/go to college, you'll be able to register for classes like that. :) That's the great thing about it, you can specify what you'd like to take, rather then how general highschool classes are.

There were only two part in the entire book that I actually enjoyed. 1) The sex scene. 2) When he talks about silence.

I loved every single book that's ever been assigned in school.

I recently just finished The Cather in the Rye and I honestly expected way more than I got.
I plan on picking up One Flew Over the cuckoo's nest, 1984, A Brave New World, and The Satanic Verses. This should keep me happy for awhile.

Well I don't really remember my favorite book authors. But right now I'm currently reading one of Judith McNaught's book called "The Night Whispers" It's like a mission to spy on someone. More like a mystery.

My favorite authors are Todd Strasser, and Joanne Rowling. I love reading all series of Harry Potter books. It is very adventurous and magical. Also, I love to read books by Todd Strasser, such as "Hey, Dad! Get a Life," "Help! I'm Trapped in a Movie Star's Body," and "Help! I'm Trapped in the President's Body." _smile.gif

Mary Higgins Clark
J.K. Rowling (I believe that is her name...)

Books:
Crime and Punishment
All Mary Higgins Clark books are wonderful
The Harry Potter Series

I'm sure if I read more books out there this list would be longer or if I remembered names of authors and books and such.

Figured I'd bump this up, since I've got a new favorite author.

Jennifer Weiner. She's written the book "Good In Bed," which could be categorized under "Chick Lit."

Augusten Burroughs - Running With Scissors, Dry, and Magical Thinking...all are freakin' brilliant books. "Running With Scissors" is about his f*d up childhood, a memoir of sorts...it's a hell of a book, really emotional and sarcastic. An all-around great book. Dry and Magical Thinking are "continuations" of RWS. Dry is about his adult life and Magical Thinking is a collection of short stories about people he knows or situations in his life....

David Sedaris - Me Talk Pretty One Day....kind of in the vein of Running With Scissors, a memoir of one guy's life...not as f*d up but still pretty good

Aimee Cooper - Coloring Outside The Lines: A Punk Rock Memoir ...another memoir, this one is about one chick's experiences in the early 80's punk scene. A very fun and well-told story. I'd encourage all punk/rock/hardcore music fans to read this book.

Dee Dee Ramone - Lobotomy: Surviving The Ramones - Hard-hitting and very real. An account of The Ramones career and music...kinda graphic, but a must read for anyone who calls theirself punk or is interested in the roots of punk.

Ok, I'm done with memoirs....here's a few "real" books.

Rob Thomas - Rats Saw God and Slave Day - Excellent books, I highly recommend both. Warning: Slave Day might offend some...

Chuck Palahniuk - Lullaby, Survivor, Invisible Monsters and Choke - Really great books, all of them. Unique style and messed up characters....

Philip Pullman - His Dark Triliogy - If you like Harry Potter and are looking for something similar, then check this out...it's 3 books, "The Golden Compass", "The Subtle Knife", and "The Amber Spyglass". All tell the tales of orphan girl in Victorian times who possesses a gift that's really more of a curse, the ability to read the golden compass. This gift gets her into trouble and the following books tell of her adventures.

....that's all for now. cool.gif

Christopher Rice is a brilliant author. He's written three books thus far (A Density Of Souls, Snow Garden, and Light Before Day) and I adore them all.

I also liked Scott Heim's Mysterious Skin which has been made into a movie as well.

I used to really like Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' books as well, but I'm not as much a fan of them anymore.

I liked Elizabeth Wurtzel's Prozac Nation as well.

I'm such a bookworm.

My favorite author is Neal Stephenson by far. He's such a skilled storyteller. Pretty much all his books are good, but I enjoyed Snow Crash the most. His Baroque Cycle series is great, too.

Douglas Coupland is rather awesome. Currently reading Hey Nostradamus! and I can't put it down.

Another recent favourite is The Curious Incident of The Dog in the Nighttime. Can't wait to see what else Mark Haddon comes up with.
