i have virtually no knowledge about politics whatsoever.. mainly because i'm not especially interested in all the little pretty details. hmm but con seems far more difficult...
but i suppose a con to political parties is that they pressure their members for party loyalty, so members of Congress may often vote for bills that their parties want passed rather than what they want passed. also, i don't know about you, but most of the people i know claim that they're affiliated with a certain political party simply because they like the feeling of community and belonging. so when they support the party's ideas, it's false public support because they're supporting the party to feel as if they belong to a clique rather than because they believe in the party's cause. also, the two-party platform system is so rigid.. it promotes the idea of "if you think this way, you also have to think this way." that's why so many teens who are against abortion feel that they have an obligation to support privatization of social security-- because republicans strongly oppose abortion and endorse privatization, as well. |

well, wow, there are lots of pros:
- they recruit and nominate candidates; they are crucial players in electoral politics! - they educate and mobilize voters, as well as provide campaign funding and support - the two parties provide balance; they check each other's policies and such and promote compromise and negotiation frankly, without political parties to maintain order, politics would be such a mess, especially since America is so accustomed to the party system already! |
