I've always admired Frederick Douglass. He was a very significant leader int he abolitionist movement. happy.gif Yea, I learned about him in APUSH (AP US History) just recently. He helped prove that African-Americans as well as any colored folk was capable of speaking up for their rights and that they were as equal as any man. :]

I see Serena and Venus Williams and see such strong beautiful women succeeding in a world that is usually dominated by white people. Though I am not black, I still find inspiration in their story.

Dude, you totally left Madame C.J. Walker off and Benjamin Banneker! Those two are like awesome.. and how dare you leave them out!

Madame C.J. Walker invented the shampoo.. or made it .. or whatever but she's a cool sista! Benjamin Banneker was one of the first African-American scientists! Woo! Even Thomas Jefferson gave him appraisal! Woo!

Haha, goes to show how much of a nerd I am.

But dude -- Maya Angelou's awesome in more ways than one.

although it's already March>> i wanted to cast a vote on this topic too. Each and every historical African American on the list has made some sort of impact on our lives and I thank them for all the blessings and rights they have done for us. I can;t even imagine how life would be if they weren't strong, and stuck to their beliefs. Without them, we would SERIOUSLY not be the nation we are today. and yes, I chose Harriet Tubman. She was such a strong woman and to believe that she was the brains behind the 'Underground Railroad', it's truly admirable. :)

Where's Oprah?

But on this list, it would have to be Harriet Tubman.

Why is this a poll? there are too many choices for it to be a poll.

Jimi Hendrix, Condaleeza Rice, Tupac, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone.

when i pick an african american who i most idolize im not gonna pick a rapper.
you make it seem as though that list of african americans are the only black historians, especially because you felt you had resort to Jay-Z.
what about,
Jessie Jackson
Dred Scott
Sojurner Truth
henry highland Garnett
john mercer langston
hell if ur gonna name tupac and Jay-z what about
Oprah like someone said,
or even Michael Jordan
or Colon powell
or Condeleeza.
and those are just the ones i know
im sure theres many more, people add some that i forgot.

I think this is borderline hypocritical. We shouldn't need one month to celebrate the people who have changed this world, nor should we even concentrate on race. I believe we should be aware of the men and woman that have fought for our rights every single day. And be thankful to them and follow their example.

I don't think it's fair to just pick one as your favorite. Each have their own great attributes and contributions to the world so you can't just choose one because they are basically not comparable to each other. In my opinion at least.

Why the heck is Jay Z up there? The list consists of a bunch of people who made a big difference in the US and then all of a sudden Jay Z pops up.

whats wrong with jay-z being on it? he is one of the biggest african american businessmen, urban culture would not be what it is now if it wasnt for jayz. jayz is the classic example of a young man coming from undesirable situations to rising up to be a very successful business, man. he made it cool to dress nicely, instead of wearing shirts that hang to your knees. he made it cool to enjoy music of higher quality, signing artists like kanye west, royce da 5'9, joe budden. he is one of the first black artists to completely "cross over", being accepted by everybody and selling tons of records. jayz deserves to up there more than the williams sister do.. props to hov.. not that im voting for jay but yeah
