I am deeply offended by this display of not only insensitivity towards the victims, but the underlying racism towards Asians as well, as portrayed in this song. Racism coming from people whos ancestors who faced the worst racism than anyone else in this country and still face more discrimination than any other group, how can they be racist themselves? They're being hypocritical and very idiotic. I understand that it's 'normal' to make light of tragic situations as they have done in the past (9/11). It's done to lift spirits. But this, they were mean, they were racist. If you listen to the song, it sounds like they are making fun of Asian people, more than they are making light of the situation. It sounds like they are laughing because Asian people have died, calling them 'chinks' and 'chinamen' and such, and laughing at the children that are gonna be sold as slaves because they are Asian. If this were in Africa they would never had made light of the situation, and would have attacked anyone who did so I think racism is the underlying issue.

I haven’t failed to notice that when referring to Africans in your Tsunami Song you’ll actually say “Africans,” and yet you’ll still refer to Asian people as “chinks” and “china-men.” Though I have to laugh at your blatant display of ignorance (since most of the tsunami victims were NOT Chinese – and being Asian doesn’t automatically make you Chinese either) I must express how completely offended I was upon listening to it.



Not only did you express your arrogance through this song, but when Miss Info simply stated that she was not a part of this, you proceeded to attack her with accusations such as: “you feel superior, probably because you're Asian." I failed to see why you would say something like that, because in my honest opinion, she has never expressed such feelings (on-air at least). Maybe it wasn’t necessary for her to say that she wasn’t involved in the making of such an offensive song, but I don’t see how bitching at her for 5 minutes was necessary either. Saying that she wasn’t a part of it wasn’t hurting anyone at all… she was only expressing her opinion. You get to express your opinion all the time – and yet when she tries to, you’re all up her ass about it. Is it because you feel that you are more superior to her because she’s Asian? On the other hand… it wasn’t necessary for you to bash her on-air for simply doing what anyone else would in the situation. What you said did offend people, and most likely offended Miss Info as well. All in all, I do think Miss Info handled herself very well. She never tried to insult you or make any ridiculous assumptions about you at all. She didn’t get personal about it. Can you say you did the same? No… you can’t. Because someone with as much arrogance as you doesn’t practice much self-restraint, or common decency.

I listen to Hot 97 all the time and everyone, except Miss Jones and her morning crew, is not rude. The morning show is horrible. They play too damn much and say things that are just way too offensive. Its sad that they had to go this far.

More Weak Responses from Hot 97, Sprint..
Hot 97's morning show aired as usual today, with nobody suspended or removed. There was no discussion of the conroversy except a brief and painfully insincere apology from Miss Jones, read twice during the four hour show. A taped apology from Pprogram director John DImick also aired once every hour. Otherwise Miss Jones, Todd Lynn and the rest went on like business as usual. I'll post the audio tonight.

Amazingly, they seem to think this is all behind them now. Just a few insincere half-apologies and we will all go away. I certainly hope we prove them wrong. Hot 97n has now proven they have no conscience or integrity, so it's especially important for us to keep going over their heads, to Emmis corporate and the sponsors. Keep hitting Emmis as hard as we can.

The Here's My Byline blog got a reply from Sprint, about their apparent sponsorship of Hot 97's bigotry.

Sprint claims that Hot 97 "appears to have disciplined the responsible parties," which is not true. No disciplinary actions of any kind have been announced. No, having the staff voluntarily donate some money does not count. Calling that an appropriate "discipline" is insulting.

The ‘Tsunami Song’ aired on Hot 97 WQHT-FM was a racist, and offensive, skit to both Asians and the victims of the tsunami and their family.

The station has issued a weak apology and Miss Jones was forced to read an apology on the air. There have also been forced to donate a week of their pay to the tsunami relief fund. Do you really think that this is a suitable punishment? That is nothing but a slap on the wrist.

The apology was obviously forced. When listeners called in to complain, Miss Jones told them all that they are not the boss of her, and she will play it whenever she wants, then played the tsunami song yet again

The issue at hand is not so much the 'need for an apology'. It's the fact that Hot97's morning crew basically said that it's ok to be a bigot and a racist as long as you 'apologize' for it later. They knew full well what they were saying and that they were saying in a public forum where hundreds of people were listening.

Miss Jones and her entire crew should be FIRED (excluding Miss Info, who got into a verbal conflict with Miss Jones after objecting to this song) and anyone else above them responsible for the insulting song should be reprimanded as well.

Please take the appropriate action necessary.

today, i was watching oprah. yes. oprah.  anyways, the episode was about the tsunami. i got really touched by the story that an american father told about losing his son. you might not think much of it now, but if you did see that episode, how the father told the story, and a picture of his son, you would have been moved. i know i did. i didn't stop crying until the story was done. and that was a long time.

Jin Records Track Dissing Hot 97, Sponsors Pulling Their Ads
The highly respected Chinese-American emcee Jin just recorded a blistering freestyle track in response to Hot 97's racism, you can download the mp3 here.

And in today's other big news, one of Hot 97's sponsors, the Jackson Hewitt tax service, reports they are pulling their advertising and support from hot 97's morning show, im response to the outcry over their Tsunami song:

Dear Sir/Madam:
We respect and share in your concerns regarding the truly insensitive
and inappropriate behavior of the show's hosts and the airing of the
offensive song. Please be aware that Jackson Hewitt Tax Service does
not endorse or approve of such behavior and had no input or prior knowledge as to the content of the broadcast that aired last week
during the "Miss Jones in the Morning" program.

In fact, we have already contacted station owners and management to express our concerns and to inform them that we have withdrawn our advertising and support from the "Miss Jones in the Morning" program.

We acknowledge that the station has posted an apology, but certainly do not believe that that is enough, considering the serious nature of this matter. Thus we have called upon the station's owners and management to further review this program and its allowance of such behavior.

We thank you for taking the time to reach out to us on this serious matter.

I have to agree, and I STRONGLY encourage everyone to keep the pressure on sponsors and shareholders, and keep watching this situation closely. It is quite possible the morning show is only getting a little paid vacation, and they're hoping we won't notice when they come back in two weeks.

At 6 AM this morning, Hot 97 announced the Miss Jones morning show is "suspended indefinitely". I posted the announcement here as an mp3.

This morning from 6 to 10 was hosted by someone named "E-Bro" who took calls on-air about the controversy. Most of the calls they took were in favor of bringing Miss Jones back. Many people have reported to me that when they called to speak against bringing the show back they were screened out.

They also played Jin's dis track repeatedly. EDIT: They also nterviewed Jin, the audio is here courtesy of holla-front.com. Also posted by alljin.com here. Jin stood firmly his belief that the Miss Jones morning show should not be brought back on the air.

They're not saying whether the suspension is permanent or temporary, or whether it is a paid suspension. Or whether the suspension includes Miss Info.

An ad for Miss Jones' special "smackfest finals" on Friday morning at Caroline's comedy club aired minutes before the announcement, but now they have said that event is "postponed."

Meanwhile, both Sprint and Mcdonalds have announced they will suspend their advertising:

New STATEMENT FROM SPRINT
* Because the tsunami parody content on the Hot 97 program was in violation of our company standards, Sprint intends to suspend its advertising on the station.

The following information was issued previously:

* Sprint does NOT have any connection to the Tsunami Song aired on Hot 97 FM.

* Sprint strongly objects to any communication or other effort making light of the devastation of the tsunami disaster. The content of the "Tsunami song" clearly runs contrary to Sprint's commitment to diversity and inclusion, and is not in any way supported or condoned by Sprint. Needless to say, our hearts go out to the tsunami victims and their families -- for this and other reasons, the Sprint Foundation and our associates have worked together since the tsunami tragedy to raise funds for disaster relief efforts and will continue to do so.

*Sprint has purchased advertising time on Hot 97 but was incorrectly identified as a sponsor of the segment of the show in which the song was referenced. In any case, Sprint was unaware and had no connection to the content of the "Tsunami Song."

*Sprint has expressed our strong concern about this content to the radio station. The station has issued a public apology and appears to have disciplined the responsible parties. Sprint continually evaluates acceptable content against our own guidelines and we will continue to monitor the process with all outlets in which we advertise.

The Hot 97 morning team in New York including Miss Jones has been let off with a slap on the wrist by station management despite broadcasting some of the most offensive comments in broadcast history.

Hot 97 has responded with a not too difficult to handle vacation for the offenders under the guise of a suspension despite the public and their own listeners calling for their sacking.
