How many of you actually read the books you are assigned to read for school? This year my class has read 5 books and I've only fully read 1. The rest I either start to read and never finish the last few chapters or I only read the first few chapters, get bored with it, and go on sparknotes or pinkmonkey. So what about you??

my english teacher is lazy she only assigned us ONE book which was like... 4 months ago... and i finished that like long before she gave it to us.. because i read it before _dry.gif my english teacher is getting paid to do nothing. trust me, she never taught us ANYTHING. she assigns SUBS to teach us, i don't see the point of having her then.. mad.gif

1. we never had anything for spelling.
2. we never did stories or anything.
3. we never had anymore tests or anything. (we only had one test.. which was like.. 5 months ago.. and really easy.. and..pointless.)

i have the worst english teacher ever.. my gr.7 teacher taught me more WORDS than my english teacher will EVER teach anyone. pinch.gif

oh yeah.. most of the time we spend in class is listening to her talk about her life... or reading a book we had to bring in ourselves... kinda pointless really. we have reading period second block.. stubborn.gif

well we have this thing called "A.R." stands for accelerated reader.
each book has a level and a certain amount of points. you read the book, take a test, and if you pass you get those points.
we have to get a certain amount of points per semester

So far, I've read like 4 books and I have like 5 mores to read until the end of the year.. the sad thing is that the 3 others books are boring. I've never really liked reading, the worse thing is that even if you didn't read the book at my school. The teachers are explaining everything so that, even if you didn't read it and you've listened in class you can pass the exam that sucks. Makes me mad thinking about those who didn't read the book and have same mark as me gr.

haha biatches, i dont have an english this year! when my family and i moved a few years back i had to change school districts. in the school district that i came from, english started in 8th grade, and went to english V in 12th grade. in my new school district, the kids here start english in 9th grade and go to english IV in 12th grade. THAT MEANS that im an english ahead of everybody else. so while everybody else is stressing about senior english this year, im not breaking a sweat because i took senior english last year! the only bad thing though is that all of the announcements about our class (in my case, class of 2005) are sent out through the english classes. this wasnt so much of a problem becuase last semester i sat in the 7th period english class (who is taught by the same teacher who i had for english III my sophomore year) beuase (a) thats the same period my girlfriend has english and i enjoy sitting next to her and because (b) i didnt have anywhere else to go becuase i dont drive to school and there istn really anywhere else id rather be/anything else id rather be doing. NOW things are different. my gf decided to change her schedule, so now instead of having 7th period english, shes now an aide for japanese 1 teacher (she did this so that she could graduate under national japanese honor society, which only works if youre enrolled in some sort of japanese class the last year of high school). im not going to sit in that english class if shes not there, so now i sit in the japanese room. not english. no announcements. well have to see if this all works out... and whether i graduate on time... haha

the last book we read was all about sex.
hahaha it was funny. laugh.gif

I remember we had to read Romeo and Juliet...then take a test on it..I read it, but didn't know what the people were saying so i stopped and failed a test. Then we had to read The Hobbit. That one was okay, i guess.
But I'll prolly try and read the books this year so I don't fail any tests.

Fully.

I don't get how you can't. We have like tests on each chapter and it's better to be prepared!

Sparknotes doesn't give you everything in detail, and only summarizes. I use sparknotes after I finish reading so I can take notes.

We have this thing called Acelerated reading, (AR reading) and we have a point goal & a level, and we have to read books that are within our level & get all the points for our goal, or a bunch of points get marked off for our reading grade. stupid.

Hmm.. Well I've only read 1 book out of the two assigned to us.. Or wait.. I think there MIGHT have been another? Dunno.
Anyway, the other book that I didn't read I just skimmed.. didn't bother.going on sparknotes.com I was just too lazy! lolol.
ALTHOUGH, we were assigned to read any b ook that we wanted from a list of about 50 books. So I guess I read 2 books out of three. The first book I read over the summer (damn summer reading book) and amazingly, I did pretty well on the test for it as well as the newspaper project -- got a better grade than others, even though I BSed it. _smile.gif =P

We've had to read one of our choice, and 2 that are mandatory. The rest comes out of our Literature books. At least in our Lit. books, all the stories are so tragic. Has anyone else noticed that? Anyway, I completely read the book of my choice, read half of one of the mandatory ones (yay gradesaver.com!), and am in the middle of the other. The one I have now is actually kind of interesting.

I usually read all of the books, just because we get tested on the content and what not.. can't really use spark notes because they're insignificant novels

I'm taking AP english for my junior year and we have a summer reading list which includes "This Boy's Life", "An American Childhood", and a collection of essays. I read several of the essays, maybe half and I'm about 100 pages in "An American Childhood".

I read the Great Gatsby for english last year. I could not enderstand the metaphors, they were so confusing. But that's just me and my non-analyzing brain.

I have the same exact reading as hirador (as we go to the same school). The collection of essays is 50 Essays - A Portable Anthology. That wasn't too bad. Some of the essays were amusing. But some were just hopeless and took me a few hours to read.

My teacher's advice is, "You can use SparkNotes all you want, but we'll be talking about the character's personalities and traits and less about the story."

I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird, but that's just because I lost the second book. >.> It's really good so far though.

I love To Kill a Mockingbird. It is an excellent novel; one of the best ever written in my opinion.

I always read every book I'm assigned. I normally like any book that is assigned, however. I only use sparknotes to brush up on what I read before a test.

For my AP English class I had to read Caucasia and Black, White, and Jewish. My teacher strayed from anything too old and stuck to more modern books, which was cool - I usually only read old, classic novels so this was something fresh.

Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd and the Glass Menagerie by Tennesse Williams. I didnt like that book. I had to force myself to read it.
