let's get a few opinions about a growing problem i've been noticing lately. apparently some people think that you can't rightfully claim credit for coding, since you didnt invent the programming language. therefore anyone of you can take my layouts, and just change the image, and that's okay... it doesnt constitute as jocking, and i shouldnt get mad about it.
please, that's just like saying its okay for people to plagarize literature because the author didnt invent the English language. Sure, one thing is more important the other.. but learning how to program is just like learning a new language. Like english, you have a certain syntax you have to learn.. you have to learn all the tags (comparable to vocabulary), and you have to learn how to put it together to make it work the way you want. i wouldnt mind if someone took part of my code, like how to create a link, or how to put a border on something... because yeah, of course i didnt make that up... but to take my code in it's entirity... that can't be justified. you guys know that it takes me longer to code my xanga than it does to make the graphics? but that's just becaues xanga is f**ked up, and im constantly having to tweak everything to work the right way. you DIDN'T create the source code for the layout... someone else did.. just like if you jock an image.. you didnt make the image.. someone else did.. so that person deserves the credit for sitting there and coding the layout or creating the graphic. it took time to do both... THEIR time; not yours. so dont say things like "i got the coding for someone else, but i used a different graphic, and that's good enough to not credit them." it's not the individual lines of code or tags that count either... what counts is the whole thing.. and how each code plays off each other and makes your layout work the way you want. its the end effect that counts... so yeah of course u cant claim credit on every individual line of code, but you do have the right to claim credit on the entire thing all together. right? i may be wrong, but that's my take on it. |

that's understandable. it's only natural that one would be upset about others claiming credit for something that took so much time and effort; although, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. however, people are lazy; it's practically unpreventable. encoding or hiding your source is the only solution.. if that's even possible.

I think you're right. You thought of it so therefore you should have credit and that no one should use your ideas or layouts unless they give you credit...Well...err...you're right for getting mad.

people should just take the time to try to learn than jack stuff from the people that take days and days to learn . and it also takes more time to make the layout or w/e your tryin to make. peoples these days.......... |

According to whatiscopyright.org:
QUOTE Hey - everyone knows that HTML coding and webpage layouts cannot be copyrighted! Based upon what? I am of the opinion that a webpage layout may be copyrighted if it is actually written and/or designed by the author and has been fixed in a tangible medium by being saved to a hard drive. If you wanted, you could put your HTML into a text file and print it out, couldn't you? Doesn't that make it tangible - something you can read or look at? However, this only applies if one actually wrote the HTML coding and designed the web page layout by oneself (even if one uses an HTML editor). If one copies and pastes HTML from one web page into another one may not claim copyright. It is not an original work, and may even be construed as copyright infringement. And for those of you who like to take someone else's source and "alter" it to suit your needs (*coughsushiproductionscough*): QUOTE What if I take someone else's writings, text, HTML or graphic image and change it around to suit my needs? I own the "new" version, right? If you did any of that with the original owner's permission, and according to his/her terms and conditions than you own the "new" version. If not you may be committing copyright infringement and/or plagiarism. |

i agree with trish. if it were the opposite..then everyone would be plagiarizing off each other because coding obviously has to be pretty similar for some things, like xanga skins.

I totally agree because it does take a lot longer to code a layout for me than to make it. So yes, if someone takes the coding, that's still plagiarism.

yeah that's true...look at it this way, an architect designs a blue print for this project, then someone takes the blue print, recreates it and puts on a different sign on the doorway...i do it to learn more how to code, but not no major shizzle like fwiggen hardcore claimage and crap, that's like putting your signature on every square inch of the damn thing....okay im done

It's xanga, not my job, so I don't care.
I mean, with an architech, that's their job, they get paid for it. They have the right to get mad. That's their mortgage...or dinner for their family. But xanga, it's an online journal, you're not getting paid, and when you realease a skin, you put yourself on the line with having your codes "jocked". I mean, you can get upset, but don't go overboard...you're still online you know... ..that's my opinion. By the way, technically, most of you guys don't have a copyright to your xangas... You have to process an application, and I doubt you guys have done that. |

edit:// and no.. you dont have to process an application to it. though the only problem with xanga is that most likely, you've done something to violate xangas rules... like if you removed the banner... so if you try to sue someone, it may backfire on you. |

It's true I guess. But even though someone did steal my layout... and said it was theirs. I don't go to their xanga and say "hey b*tch you stole my layout. take it off" i just say "heh nice layout, thanks for using my layout."
Yeah it took me maybe an hour to put the div layers right and also the layout too...yes it took me awhile. but if someone says that they made it, i just laugh it off heh... cause i know that they didnt make it. and they know that too. but to their friends and the anonymous, the jocker says that they made it so people can be like "wow you did a great job" but yeah jocker is a bad thing that people shouldn't do... well i know few people who jocked it and felt bad about it but they always get picked on because they always have the baddest layouts. so they jock people's layout and saying it's theirs... but the end up getting bashed by the creators of the layouts.. i know few people cause they did to mine too and also other people's layout from createblog and i wont tell you..well i did told once, but i found out it was my friend O__O;; so i felt bad haha... So yeah the whole point is that I agree with you. also the part when you said the codes for your stylesheets.. i agree about that too because im trying to get the perfect colors by opening photoshop and the load up is very slow to open it up >.<;; and also the width, the height and such... usually people take about hmm an hour? ehh i started to confuse myself right now, okay i'll stop here >.<; |

Well I guess I agree with you. I mean you had to spend time organizing the order of the coding.. and someone else just copies that.. THAT isn't fair. And then the fact of just "modifying" an image is just not cool. I do my own layouts and if I see someone changed it or took out my credit I'd be very angry. I took time to do it. It's not like here take it claim it as your own. You want rights to what you did.

the way i code is different from the way trish codes and is different from the way the next person who posts codes ;o. i align my things the way i like it, and i organize my divs/tables according to what suits ME. for those who don't understand the "art" in coding... just take a look at the source codes of people who own domains (not xanga, cause it's a fact that most xanga users just copy and paste)... you'll see so many differences in style and even "neatness".
keep in mind, there is more than one way to make something look the way it does... so naturally, it's annoying when someone takes the easy route and copies from you... it's like the person wrote down the same answers for an exam you both took -=\. |

i think your right. i totally support you and your opinion, because its true, your coding is what makes the layout that you made work! =o) it's something that's so true and people want to just take the whole thing apart that you worked hard for and fixing it a lil bit with their image, makes it theirs just doesnt cut it!! seriously i understand...

true. very true. i don't get how people can take pride in what others took the time to do and they stole. it's just like basically saying, "Yeah, I stole this. I'm so cool. You guys can't steall like i can cause y`all are wussies." in a hidden language. it's extremely stupid. EXTREMELY stupid.
