this has just been gnawing on my mind for a couple days.

a few days ago, i passed by a couple of people talking about how much they LOVED green day... however, when i asked if they knew about green day before their American Idiot song, they all said no. Most didnt even know that they had been around for many years before...

so, as a question to all Green Day fans, especially those who LOVE green day, how many of u knew/cared for the band 5 years ago? how many actually listened to dookie?

not meant as an insult to anyone

Yeh. I know.. it pisses me off.
I liked them a long time before I even knew of American Idiot the CD.
In fact, my favorite song of theirs is an old one.. "Longview"
I love their old stuff, and I truly am a fan.

Yeah, everyone's OBSESSED with Green Day just because of American Idiot. Ever since it hit MTV... (not that I don't like MTV)

I have 3 of their Cd's.. Dookie, American Idiot, and Insomnia. Soo yeah, I've known about them for a while.

I actually think the old Green Day is somewhat better than the new American Idiot kind.. but hey, isn't that most of artists dreams? To be famous and well-known?

I love green day and have been a fan for several years (not sure about the exact number) but my frist Green Day CD was Warning... I've listened to Dookie. I own it actually. I have Dookie, Nimrod, International Super Hits, Insomniac, Warning and American Idiot. I think I'm only missing one of their CDs... My favorite songs are Basket Case and Minority.

I don't understand why people have to prove that they're 'loyal fans' just cause they've been listening to to them for years, bashing on new fans. I understand if it's a group of stupid little girls that cant distinguish oen band member from another running around with notebooks scribbled with 'I LOVE BILLY JOE FROM GREENDAY', meanwhile they're spelling billie joe and green day wrong. That pisses me off as well. But honestly, what's so bad about someone who heard a single on the radio, liked it, bought it and love it? Isn't that what a musicians job is in the first place? Trying to write songs that people can enjoy and get into? It's hypocritical because I doubt all of you guys starting listening to them when they FIRST got together during the mid eighties. Everyone is the noobie at one point or another, and if new people are getting into Green Day now, or any other band for that matter, I say good for them.

I hope I'm noo coming off as mean or anything... Maybe I'm just bitter, but I was talking to my friend the other day and she was pissed off because this girl just started listening to her favorite band, and it bothered her that someone else knew about them. Wtf is up with that? This thread always comes up in a forum, no matter what kind of music you listen to, and it never ceases to amaze me about how possesive some people are towards something that isn't even theirs. There's nothing loyal about that.

Wow... long ass post... O_O.

Wow... long ass post... O_O.

Yeah, but those are the people that make them popular. The trend whores that follow everything because it's on MTV or it's on the radio. They don't truly appreciate the music - they do it because everyone else is. They're fed what the media provides them. To not even know that it's Green Day and Billie Joe makes me mad. It makes the true fans mad. That's why.

oh who the crap cares.
so you listened to them first. whoopie.
you know that you knew first, so let them be.

just cause someone starts listening to a band when their new cd comes out doesn't mean they don't really like the band.

I know that Green Day's been around for awhile, I listen to their songs before "American Idiot" ...
But what's wrong with the fact that there are some people that do like Green Day becuz of their song "American Idiot" ? It doesn't always mean becuz of the media just becuz the song actually makes a connection to them so they like it. Meh, I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I know exactly what you mean. A lot of people are so crazy about them now just because 'American Idiot'. People are like, "Omg I <3 Green Day!!" and I'm talkin about those 12 years olds hammer.gif I mean, that's cool if you're a fan but don't claim that you are a die hard fan. I have been listening to em since....let's see, when "Hitchin a ride" came out which is on Nimrod & came out in..1997. So that's 8 years. I was hooked when I saw that video. Anyways, yeah. Those people annoy the pootie outta me.

Well does it really matter? .... mellow.gif

Well I kinda felt the same when people started to like Shinhwa when they just started to like them a month and they said they were their biggest idol.

I heard that in the past albums of Green Day, their albums wasn't that really good? Like they were bit too harsh? But my sister still loves them because of their new album and Billy Joe Armstrong sings very good and he's very nice????

I guess some people say I love Green day when they don't really mean it cause they just want some attention from the Green day fans? I don't know, but that's just my opinion mellow.gif

Wow! My first post. tongue.gif
Sadly I grew up listening to pop, being a part of the overprotective family that I am. Green Day was honestly my first favorite rock band. 7 years ago or so I liked a bunch of their songs that I didn't even know were theirs "Time of Your Life", "Basket Case", "Minority"... etc. Then when I bought their cds for the first time a little over 4 years ago, I was like, "OOOOH that's who sings that song!! This band is awesome". cool.gif My first cd of theirs was Nimrod and now I own all except for Warning, which I shall get soon. Heh heh. Yeah I hafta admit, it was kinda annoying how they just all shot up in popularity from American Idiot. Sure, some of the concepts are really easy to understand and relate to... but still, you can't become a hardcore fan in 3 months. pinch.gif

why does it bother you that other people enjoy listening to the music you do?

if u truly love the band, why aren't u happy for them for acheieving comercial success? and surely if people are buying American idiot and loving it, then maybe they'll buy their other albums, and become 'true fans'

if it really bothers u, form a little coven, lock the bedroom door, give the true fans a pass word, throw dookie on the cd player and bitch your little hearts out.

sheesh

I hate that too. Some people now are even saying that Green Day hasn't really been that popular until their American Idiot cd, which is NOT true. Some people dont' even know that that cd has a meaning to it. People only listen to these things because they hear it someplace else or whatnot. Which I think is stupid. peopel should start listening to the meaning of some songs and stop saying "Oh wow. I love this song" just because some people you know like it. MTV has made some people realize the light instead of listening to Hillary Duff, but other than that, yea. They ruined it. People like that are just jumping on the bandwagon.

I knew a girl who only liked whatever liked. Whatever shoes I wore, whatever music I liked, whatever my hair style was, she'd copy me. So when I heard of Green Day the first song I heard was She. She immediately liked it too. It got so annoying.

yeah I know dude, Greenday does totally rocked, I listened to dookie, Ive listened to all their albums, though the only one I have is international superhits, I download. But I am still a huge fan. I used to listen to Crap and hip hop whatever the hell its called. about 4 years ago, then my friend made me listen to greenday, and Ive been a rocker ever since. You may call me a poser but I dont give a shit. (not trying to be rude just used to being called a poser when p[eople found out I used to be like that) People think that people cant change. anyway, why is it that almost every band the old shit is better? green day, old shits better, GC olds better, blink 182.....ext....See ya dude!

Yeah I've really liked Green Day since Nimrod, but I'll admit I only became friggin all for them right when American Idiot came out.

I first started listening to Green Day when I was in 7th grade and I'm a junior in college .. so yea, a long time. But, I'm not a hard core fan. I don't have all their albums, but I do have dookie and nimrod. I didn't know dookie wasn't their first, but that isn't affecting me as a fan. I like their new album, but honeslty, it's more pop than punk like their other albums.

my favorite song is good riddance, and i don't think american idiot is half as good as that song, but retarded mtv had to go and make green day mainstream. screw you mtv!
*

Green Day has been on MTV before american idiot, so don't just blame it all on mtv for the teeny boppers. Green Day SENDS their videos TO mtv to be aired, mtv just doesn't miracelously have them without green days permission.

i totally understand what your point is. its kind of annoying for me too. i've asked people too if they really do like green day as in from since they practically started. but they dont even know their old songs...especially the really popular ones time of your life and basketcase and stuff. i mean how can you not know the dookie album if you love green day!? these two weird..girls...were like yeah my favorite band is green day and i was kind of surprised cause normally they dont listen to those kind of songs and i was like oh really what are your favorite songs. then they told me boulevard of broken dreams and i was like uhh..is that it? dont you know this? dont you know that? they didnt know the others except for some from the american idiot album. i've seen many people that are like this. what really gets me is when their music is on these group of preps are like gathered around and singing along to it like its some pop song. ugh.....

if these so called green day lovers really liked them as much as they say n shit.. they would look up different songs from other cd's.. and know other things about them.. i mean if someone never heard of them and recently did when their new album came, i could see that, but they should have a variety of their music and not just that cd..which isn't all that great either ...my opinion.

another thing..

As some of you could probably tell i'm into KoRn..
i do that same with people who are all like "Oh Korn kicks ass, rock on!" But, when you ask them if they ever heard of them before their new album, they have no idea what your talking about.. so pretty much it's with all bands with recent albums.

oh who the crap cares.
so you listened to them first. whoopie.
you know that you knew first, so let them be.

just cause someone starts listening to a band when their new cd comes out doesn't mean they don't really like the band.
*

I agree. To tell you the truth i didnt even know who greenday was untill some months ago. Yeah, i did listen to some of their old songs but i didnt really pay attention to who they were. So i guess you can say im not a true fan. But w.e i dont really care cuz i really love their old cd's and the old cd's were better than their recent one...

some of their songs are good. the present green day is a little too mainstream, although a few of their songs on the american idiot album are pretty good. i prefer old school green day, when they were starting the whole rock trend. i'll give them respect because they've been around for so long.

Yeah I hate when a bunch of 13 year old punk wannabees say they love greed day, and they think american idiot is their first album. I'm not really a fan but I know they've been around forever. Their new songs are too played out.

this has just been gnawing on my mind for a couple days.

a few days ago, i passed by a couple of people talking about how much they LOVED green day...  however, when i asked if they knew about green day before their American Idiot song, they all said no. Most didnt even know that they had been around for many years before...

so, as a question to all Green Day fans, especially those who LOVE green day, how many of u knew/cared for the band 5 years ago? how many actually listened to dookie?

not meant as an insult to anyone
*

I've listened to gd since I was four(1994) to dookie never stopped listening to em since then. got all their albums now + 2 ep's 3 bootlegs 1 dvd and 3 live cd's.
so I think I'm allowed to call myself a fan happy.gif

that's not quite right dookie came out in 1994 and if you're twelve now it would mean that you were 1 year old or summin like that
