Is swearing right or wrong? Or is there a more complex answer?

My answer would be that if swearing offends somebody around you, dont do it. But if your with people who dont mind swear words anymore than words like shucks, or darn, than its okay. Because whe you get down to it, swear words have the same effect as saying ouch when you get hurt. They are just a way of expressing your feelings more effectively than regular words can.

I don't know.
Some say you should only swear when you're older, but how is it okay for an adult to swear? Yeah, they have more authority.. but it's still not a good virtue.

I swear.
Probably too much.. but I don't know.

I know it's wrong.. [koff]
But my point is.. is that it's wrong for all ages.

hm..good question, don't think there's a definite answer..
swearing is "appropriate" i guess at times, and there are other times when it is just uncalled for, i don't think it's right or wrong.
i swear sometimes, but not frequently..sometimes it's just feels good to let it out.lol.

well it's freedom of speach so it's fine, but if someone asks you not to swear you should respect their wishes because they probably don't feel comfortable with it. i swear a bit but i have some friends who have asked me not to swear around them so i don't.

swearing is bad. i mean, it is bad because I swear a little too much when I'm in school and I could get caught but i just dont cool.gif
but.. umm, you could teach just a little baby to repeat "f*cking" or "bastard" or w/e and that girl could be cursing to their parents and never know. yeah, did that make sense?

hmmm.. im just gonna say how SOME ppl consider swearing.

they consider it "bad" because most swear words are considered disgusting or STRONGLY rude.. i wont really debate about if swearing is right or wrong cuz swearing is basically part of human society nowadays, cant really debate about it.

I don't get why some words which are rather offensive ARE NOT swear words.

Well I think swearing is okay if you do it seldomly and to yourself only. If you swear in whatever you say in your daily conversations, now that's TOO MUCH.

Swearing is wrong, but sometimes you just can't help it.

And it's hard not to swear, considering everything around us... people are swearing on tv, in the movies, in music...

I personally swear a lot... and I mean A LOT.

it doesnt really reflect who you are because only you know who you are , others just have a perception of who they think you are.

I swear to express my feelings if im mad ill curse , If im happy ill curse but it doesnt mean that I curse 24/7.

I think that you should curse at the right time. If you curse all the time to "express your feelings", no one will care about your feelings anymore because they take it for granted that you just love to swear. If you don't usually curse and when you DO curse, it will mean much more.

Swearing can't just be described as right or wrong; it's not a black&white issure. There are shades of grey. If someone asks you to stop, it's not whether it's right or wrong that stops you; it's just respect and courtesy.

It's neither right nor wrong.

^^ What she said.

You can't really call it "right" or "wrong." Personally, I swear fairly often. Not constantly, but I definitely don't have days where I don't curse. I just like it. But I keep it where it's appropriate. For whatever reason, man invented these words and then deemed them socially inapporiate at certain times. So I don't curse in front of children (on purpose anyway... lol) and I don't curse when I talk to my bosses or to professionals or anything like that. Mostly just when I'm talking to my family and friends. But I try not to do it too often because I think that at a certain point, it starts to sound classless.

I really don't see how swearing is wrong, unless you use it as an insult. But can't you offend someone with regular words? I don't see why parents try to make their kids not learn cuss words—I mean they will learn soon or later. As long as you don't cuss at someone to offend them in any way, then I don't see how it's wrong at all.

I don't know, but I know how the word was invented!

A long time ago in England, whenever a married couple wanted to have children, they needed permission from the king. So off they went to one of the king's representatives, and if deemed worthy of having children, they went back home and er, reproduced. While doing so, they had to abandon their jobs (most likely farming and tending to the fields) and had to put up a sign with the letters F U C K on them, which stood for "Fornication under consent of the King."

And there's your little history/legend lesson.

Anyway, swearing is fine to me. While most people think of this as a moral issue, I think this is more of a personality and self image issue. We all use different vocabulary and diction because we may be from different areas, interact with different groups of people, etc. It depends on who you're talking to, and what you're talking about. Swearing, I think, is acceptable if you take note of what kind of person it is you're talking to.

Though when they grow up, It just turns into a basic word for them. It's just a word, but if they learn it young, who knows what they will do next. Steal?. That's just my opinion

As of late, I have noticed that, when people use it, it sounds rather stupid. Well, at least I think so. It is like that one kid in your class who is using such clichéd words, it sounds just retarded to hear.

Cussing (swearing) seems to go on more than just some 'cool term' that has been used too much. Like 'your mom' jokes. Those just need to rot away.

So, I rarely cuss, because when I do, I think I sound stupid. And it bothers me at times. So.. ehh. I don't mind that people cuss, it just.. sounds funny.

Well, I think that's more of an opinion, there's not really a right or wrong answer. Though I think that swearing are merely just words, it's really what you think of the words that matter, it's not much of anything else, and swear words are just like any other words.

well technically...i think it's mentioned in the bible somewhere saying it's a sin...or i'm just making it up...i dunno...but i mean...they call it "swearing" for a reason right and "bad words"???...so i guess it's called that for a reason and so i'm guessing it's wrong...if it wasn't, why wouldn't they let you say these words at school and such???...eh..i used to use curse words a lot..but i've cut back seeing how i really don't need to say words like that...but i still swear when i'm pissed off....oh but i like the word bitch...eh.. huh.gif

There is no "right" or "wrong" to swearing. Sometimes it bugs people, but it's your choice to swear or not, and it's your choice who you swear around. If people don't like it and they think it somehow makes you a worse person, then that's their opinion. But there isn't a universal right or wrong to swearing.

Swearing is f**kin hella neccessary. Swaerwords help share all your f**kin emotions. If you can't think of the right f**kin word to discribe your fellings just replace it with a profanity. Use profanities to intensify sentences and stress certain adjectives. These profanities exist in our dictionaries, why not use them?

Who's to decide whether swearing is right or wrong. I went to the Virgin Islands last summer and hung out with some of the locals and half the swears the used weren't even remotely offensive to me. Conversely, when I called a bad driver a 'f**kin douchebag' they shrugged and only recognized it as something bad because of the tone and the context in which I used the statement.

You just got here and you're wearing out your welcome. Yes this topic is about profanity and its udnerstandable if you use a quote from a particular incident, but you are showing a lack of class.

I swear all the time... just not on message boards happy.gif

I picked up the habit of swearing when I was about 8 or 9 years old... I blame my parents/brothers... My oldest brother would constantly swear at nothing... oh well.

I swear... its a habit. Started using cuss words in the third grade but didn't actually USE them 'till like middle school. I only did it to be "cool" then I stopped. My friend started making me cuss again cause he said he hasnt heard me cuss in a while so thats when I started. I just do it naturally no, sometimes I dont even realise it. I say it in class and I get in trouble for it _dry.gif

I think, as the first post said..it all depends on who you're with. Yes, swearing is just words..But to some people it's offensive. Everyone is offended, or turned off by certain things in life..and people should just respect that. Who knows, maybe someoen out there is offended by the use of the word "Oompa". o_O

I swear sometimes when I get hurt. Like, get a bruise when I fall down or something. So I guess it's just a way to vent off my anger and pain. -shrug- But I don't cuss for no apparent reason.

Swearing is wrong when it goes overboard.
But I guess it's another way of teens to express themselves these days.

I don't like swearing, so I don't swear unless I'm SUPER pissed off.

People swear to fit in and to be "cool" and it's dumb. Also, when people swear constantly and for no reason is pointless.

I swear...occasionally. I don't think it's really good or bad, they're words. Words that aren't considered cursing offends people too. So...iono...whatever floats your boat.

swearing...is often a self esteem booster...

but like...after a while, will they be considered swears anymore?
if enough people say these words, they'll soon become part of the regular vocabulary. something like "dang" or "crap", etc. i dunno...just a random thought.

I swear so damn much (dang I did it again) and it really doesn't affect me, I just hate when people swear with every other word in a sentence, and I think people should just not swear around people they know it will offend, hell I used to swear when I talked to my teachers, its normal, everyone does it, its no longer a big issue anymore, good topic tho thumbsup.gif

I dont usually go out of my way to use obscene language. I've been known to swear quite a bit I guess. Words are words. If it happens, it happens.

i say swearing is okay. for some people, it's like an automatic thing. like if you get hurt or lose a game, some people just yell out "s**t". swearing is like an everyday thing i guess, but i think it's going overboard if you include a swear word in basically every single sentence.

Parents are a bad influence when it comes to cursing. I for one do not use cursing in my vocabulary to me, it just doesn't sound right.

i totally agree; if someeone around you is going to get offended; then best if you kept shut buh if your around your friends and they really dont care then i guess it would be okay. But then at times i do think it depends on your religion because some of them are against swearing.
