pros: you're serving your country, you get to kind of help people, military discounts =P, you also might get access to stuff that people who arent in the military arent allowed to see, you will get to see a lot of places

cons: might have to move around a lot, you might have to work long hours, you will most likely travel a lot, your job will most likely be hard, if you have to join the war theres a risk of dying, you might have to travel somewhere and not see your family for months.. even years

umm yea my dad is in the military so i know a little bit about it

The pros are the money for school, and the military does take good care of their own.

Cons are that you have almost no control of where you go. Some people don't mind moving alot, some do. They control a large amount of your life. Also the chance of being deployed. Thats never fun.

Now, as for the marines.... I wouldn't join. I've heard terrible things about the mind games that they play in basic training. They break you down, then build you up as part of the marines. What I've heard is that once your in, thats it.

Now, I'm getting my information from my brother in the Air Force (shameless plug) and his friends, and some Navy guys that live near me. So it's probably not the most objective.

I got a story.

There was a sergeant major in the Marines. He died while in Iraq. The day before he died, he coincidently sent a letter home to his son in America telling him to do well in school and be nice to Mom. And to not ever join the military.

A sergeant major didn't want his son going.

if you want to join the army, then prepare your self for the long and hard training. You should learn to follow orders and never complain. You will wake up before the sun rise and sleep very late at night. You will have an endless excercise though out the day. basic training was fun but once you starts the real thing, l bet you will freak out. You will run here, there and every where. You will go where no one wants to go, you will see things that no one wants to see, you will feel things that no one want to feel, and above all can you bare the feeling of killing someone. Serving your country was very heroic, but joining the army was like putting your life in danger. Even in the basic training, you already put you life in danger. Why? lts common in the military to have body contacts and ureasonable diciplinary actions of your comanding officers. l am in a camp right now and l'm taking my advance military training. You have no idea what l have been trough. lts not too late to think once again but if you have the guts then go for it. _smile.gif

HOORAH, GOOD CHOICE!

I will tell you the truth and nothing but the truth.

Marines are first to fight, thus, if you end up in a deployable unit, you will definitly be going to Iraq, switching in and out every 6 months, unlike me who ended up in a non deployable unit at VMAT 203 Squadron. All I do is paper work for everyone there and for the officers flying their HELLA COOL JETS right past my office. anyways...

your gonna go through bootcamp, MCT (Marine Combat Training), MOS School (where you learn your job), and then you'll finally hit the fleet. Depending on how long your school is, you might not hit the fleet for a long time. My school was only 6 weeks. Some go to 3 months and even a year. I was orignially going into Intel, but i went to boot early and got dropped to Legal Administration.

But theres no better feeling then going into an Army, Navy, and Air Force base, and knowing that you are the shiznit for going through Marine training. (If you want to join another branch of military after marines, you dont have to do boot again cuz the marines was the hardest one). and then when you go home, everyone worships you.

Um... watch out for Marine females, cuz they know they can get some from any marine guy they want, cuz marine guys are horny like that (cept me - i like to be disease free unlike some.) just dont get your emotions tackled.

dude... your gonna see things you never saw b4 once you join. Oh and if you join with an accociates or bachelors degree, try going to Naval Academy School, and already start off big time taking charge of Sergeant Majors and stuff. If you can't afford college like me, just go in Enlisted and do college during. I'm taking this 18 month course soon that gives a bachlors. its craaazzyyy.

did i tell you enough?

you've got questions.
we've got answers happy.gif

i would never, ever join the military for multiple reasons, but i suppose someone has to.

i know this one guy whos joining, so hell get a bad grade in math and "oh, you dont need math for the military" which is a shame because hes really smart, so i think its a bit of a waste of him

the only other person i know whos gone into the military is a freshman in college now who i knew from band last year, who didnt apply to enough colleges and didnt get accepted anywhere but like valdosta state or something, so he joined the marines so he could go to auburn after applying late

hmmm... i thought about joining the air force, but decideed agaisnt it. but i took jrotc for like 2 year. but anyways. the pros are easy. you get special privilages, discounts, you get the ,ilitary exchanges and all the stuff associated with those, some other places give military discount, you get to see lots of pretty places (im a military dependent and i have been to guam puorto rico haweaii and alaska), you meet cool people...
some cons are you move alot of places... most of which are undesirable, if you ever have kids they will hate you for making them move everywhere and never have friendships that last forever... even if yo ustay in touch with your friends, alot of people ahte military people, strictness, and more... i jsut cant think of alot of things.
but if those are the things you want... then go for it... just maybe not the marines... because that is like one of the hardest branches of the militayr... that and navy seals. but whatever its your choice.

This is coming from someone that is considering joining as well, so bear with me.

Cons: You have *NO* control over your life. You get sent where they want you to get sent, you have to do what they want you to do, and the most obvious one, you can die. Yes, you can die anywhere, but your chances of dying (a pretty horrible death for some...) are higher in the military.

Think about it, and think about it *HARD* before you do anything. I know its driving me crazy... I want to do it but I don't know if I should. I don't want my family to be all worried... but I have to wait some time to see what happens.

pros:

being able to see the world.
serving your country.
getting to wear a uniform.
military discounts.
special privilleges, depending on what rank.
the higher the rank, the more you get paid.
you feel like you've acheived something.

cons:

moving around alot especially if you have a family.
working long night and day shifts.
having to do strenuous work without many breaks.
getting deployed for a year or more.
being sent to any kind of war.
going through boot camp.

that covers most of it.

Dude, here's some advice for you. Go to college, join ROTC and graduate from that. After ROTC join the military, you'll join as an officer in any branch. I've been a military brat all my life. I just moved from Japan. Just like you, I was thinking of joining the military. People told me to wait things out and go to college and do ROTC so I can have a better position in the military. But, it's your life man. Just don't get yourself enlisted and find yourself doing crappy jobs. Peace

Pros: Serve your country; Respect; See the world; Financial help with college; Discounts.

Cons: Pay sucks, and I stress the word SUCKS especially for risking your life in joining; Benefits aren't that great; You might go to war; You have a chance of killing people, some innnocent; Lack of sleep (in war); Lack of food (in war); Tons of work for long hours; Not being able to see your loved ones; Oh yes and Death is a likely chance.
