Alabama State Representative Gerald Allen is on record as wanting to ban gay marriage, but now he's turned his attention to the state's libraries--both public and school. Allen wants to pass a law to ban books with gay characters. He also wants textbooks that suggest homosexuality is okay out of state schools.

...for we musn't let others read 'gay' books and become 'abnormal' rolleyes.gif

ahh yes. sweet home alabama.

-where a kid dressed up in a kkk hat for school
-where our biology textbooks have a sticker that says evolution is complete crap
-where our cheif justice is a jesus freak that thinks we should admit that we're trying to spread christianity in iraq and afganistan and the muslims will stop blowing us up (i couldn't figure it out either)
-where they have to say that both overall straps must be on both sholders in the dress code

ahh yes. sweet, sweet home alabama.

I don't think any book should be banned. That's like how people wanted to ban "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". People have the right to read what they want.

Anyways, I find this really stupid. It's a total waste of time. You can't do anything to stop homosexuality; you're born with it. It's nature, not nurture, so people should just stop trying to ban all this nonsense.

How come you guys can be so adament that homosexuality is nature not nurture and vice versa? It has been proven on both sides and it just depends on which side you choose to believe in. Maybe it's nature to some but nurture to others?

And Nick. People don't decide to be homosexuals. When people "come out", they usually say something to the effect of discovering they're gay. They don't say "Well, one day I just decided to be gay." Sure, there are some gay people who are only gay because it's like.. a fad these days.. But no one just decides to be gay.

It doesn't matter of its a lifestyle choice or not.

The simple fact is that it isn't our business what other people's lifestyles are.

in fact, to clear things up i think i should post what the sticker says:

"this textbook covers the theory of evolution. students should approach this topic with an open view, and remember that it is only a theory. (yada yada crap about other possibilitys "

or something like that... i can't giver you all the text in exact because i don't have the book anymore... and chemistry doesn't cover evolution...

oh yea.. and for my scarecrow comment... i suck at typing...

pfft. the people that determine whether or not books are banned or challenged are limiting a young reader's limits even more.

teachers teach that "the sky is our limit"
Yet school can't teach you everything.

On your own, you`ll read books.

& yet books about drugs, sex, sexuality. are being banned and challenged. plus, books that were never written, aren't going to be written because of that specific reason.

Possible?

I guess gravity is only a possibility too then, after all, they're both just theories.

Back on topic, I think it's kind of silly to ban gay characters in books. Homosexuality is a part of our world culture, a part of history, and banning such would erase an important part of our history.

Are you implying that gay people make the country worse?

Anyway, I think it's stupid for him to ban books with gay characters just because he's against gay marriage. It's obviously because of his bias against gay people, which isn't right in the first place.

how dumb. if it's banned, people will want to show it even more.

someone said that homosexuality is a decison. its not really. either you're born with it or not, because most people figure out or get signs that theyre gay when they are toddlers or a little older. i'm pretty sure they don't know the meaning of gay and homosexuality at that age; they just start realizing it or acting like one when they're older.

1) banning gay characters from books is ridiculous, period. people before me have provided sufficient reasoning in me saying that.

2) if you don't want to see books with gay people in them, don't read them. if you don't want to see gay people making out, don't watch. if you don't want gay marraiges to commence near you, don't attend them.

3) WHY WOULD ANYONE CHOOSE TO BE GAY? sure, if someone preferred the same sex more but didn't do anything about it, that's a deicision. it's a decision to come out and admit to yourself that you're just downright gay. but BEING gay..is not a decision. kids in college experiment, but they turn out the way they're supposed to go. hormones develop in teenagers through puberty, which is why most kids realize their sexuality when they're in middle/high school. with the persecution people get for being gay..i would be very surprised if anyone wanted to be gay.

'nuff said.

But you can ban it from public SCHOOLS, which are government property.

A violation of freedom speech would be something like not letting you write it in the first place.

On my way home from doing some shopping Tuesday I pulled up behind a truck at a red light. On the truck there was a sticker thing that had one of those fish shaped Jesus promoting symbols (i forgot what they're called). It had TRUTH written on it. and it was eating another one of those symbols with feet that said DARWIN.... And I thought to myslef... I wonder if they have that in the oposite because I'd put that on my car...

ugh. this reminds me of that case where the Greeks were threatening to sue America for filming the movie Troy and demonstrating that he was gay. Why are people so immature that they feel EMBARRASSED that a HERO was GAY? Does that make him any less of a man? I think not. Grow up people...it's 2oo5...freedom to be who you are and express yourself. If you have a problem, then go sit in a corner and whine about it all you want becasue NOTHING is going to change...no matter what you do.

The Bible consistently tells us that homosexual activity is a sin (Genesis 19:1-13; Leviticus 18:22; Romans 1:26-27; 1Corinthians 6:9). Romans 1:26-27 teaches specifically that homosexuality is a result of denying and disobeying God. When a person continues in sin and disbelief, the Bible tells us that God “gives them over” to even more wicked and depraved sin in order to show them the futility and hopelessness of life apart from God. 1 Corinthians 6:9 proclaims that homosexual “offenders” will not inherit the kingdom of God.

God does not create a person with homosexual desires. The Bible tells us that a person becomes a homosexual because of sin (Romans 1:24-27), and ultimately because of their own choice. A person may be born with a greater susceptibility to homosexuality, just as people are born with a tendency to violence and other sins. That does not excuse the person choosing to sin by giving into their sinful desires. If a person is born with a greater susceptibility to anger / rage, does that make it right for then to give into those desires? Of course not! The same is true for homosexuality.

However, the Bible does not describe homosexuality as a “greater” sin that any other. All sin is offensive to God. Homosexuality is just one of the many things listed in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 that will keep a person from the kingdom of God. According to the Bible, God’s forgiveness is just as available to a homosexual as it is to an adulterer, idol worshipper, murderer, thief, etc. God also promises the strength for victory over sin, including homosexuality, to all those who will believe in Jesus Christ for their salvation (1Corinthians 6:11; 2Corinthians 5:17).

Yes, and church is seperate from state. so what the Bible says is totally irrelevant when making a government decision, such as banning books with gay characters.

explain to me exactly why homosexuality is a choice. ur own gender is not a choice (in most cases), so why is which gender u are attracted to

WEll, if you cannot decide if you are born male or female, then why can you choose whether or not your attracted to men or women?

lol just realized i said the same thing again with slightly different wording.

anyway, if homosexuality exists in the real world, then why should it be a crimeto write about it in books, which in themselves reflect reality as seen by the author?

i'm not saying that it condones homosexuality or promotes it, just the fact that it contains homosexuality, even though it is the talk of homosexuality being a sin.

i saw a article clip on that, lol just because spongebob sings we are family a parent wants to stop the video when in fact there are no relation to accepting homosexuals. the only relation that they have is the people who made that video have a sign in on their website and have to agree or disagree to accept any race culture or differences in people such as homosexuality.

Again, banning homosexual characters in books will do us no good as it will discontinue a huge chunk of records that are a part of our culture and history.

I really wanted to address the fact that quite a few of you have said something along the lines of "grow up", "you're immature", "stupid", " and there is a "freedom of expression"... etc without taking into consideration of what you're saying at all. It's like you guys are just throwing words out there in anger.

Yes, I understand that those of you who support homosexual rights are upset over this, but keep in mind that what you guys are supporting, freedom of lifestyle or just freedom in general, gives the same right to those who choose to be against homosexuals. As there are two sides of this controversy, there are two sides of freedom: the freedom to support, and the freedom to not support.

In this debate, the best way to go about things, in my humble opinion, is that you all use logic and facts to present your views. Condescension will give leeway to more spite that will add on to what is already a situation full of anger, and even hate, from both sides.

Just because someone bans books with gay characters in them, and attempts to ban gay marriage doesn't mean that people will stop being homosexual. It's pointless for people to try and stamp out homosexuality

sorry, I make no sense.

no i get you, and your right. as i said before, books reflect reality, and homosexulaity is a reality, so to do is not only an infringement of freedom of press, but naive as well
