have you noticed how the world is completely against left handed people?

school desks- as if those desks arent uncomfortable enough, lets just put the arm rest only on the right side, which makes writing with your left hand completely akward

sissors- cutting with sissors and getting straight lines or good curves is just hard

computer mouses/mice/meeces- theyre on the right, which although over time you adjust, it still makes drawing steadily difficult, especially when vectoring, which might just account for part of the reason im so terrible at it

writing left to right- with our writing system, moving you hand left to right with your right hand is quite easy because you can pull it along, where as lefties have to push their hand along the paper, which takes more energy, is slower, and it gets the side of your hand rediculously dirty because it rubs the paper and smears the lead/ink

see, its not easy, and its not fair. we should start a left handed peoples support activist group, or something of the sort. i mean sure, i may be able to get a scholarship for it, but thats about the only advantage. this unfair treatment of left handed people is unjust, and at the very least they should provide some lfet handed desks

Yea the thing about left handed dying soon I have heard. I heard it is because they are more prone to accidents since things are built for the right handed people. So like lefties using chainsaws will hack off their parts cuz they can't control it. Sad really. It does always make me mad when I find a cool guitar and it is for a lefty.

Yerp, I'm left handed too... But then again, it's not as uncommon as you might think. There's at least 6 or 7 people in every one of my classes who are left handed, and they have the same problems as the rest of us living in a right handed world. I wish I could write with both hands... or maybe get some smudge-proof pencils or something... Heh.

yeah..
I'm left-handed.
Alot of my teachers felt bad for me
when it came to writing a paper,
so they let me type it.
well, most of them, anyways...
Do you know that 2,500 lefties die each year,
from attempting to use right handed products,
'cause it was the only thing there?
I agree that we should start an activists group.

I have heard that left handed people die on average of 10 years sooner than right handed people. Don't feel left out! Did you know all polar bears are left handed?

I'm glad i'm a righty, i've tried to use my left, but it's just... too hard...

But my friend is a lefty... it's kinda weird how she writes... mellow.gif

And I don't think it's fair for lefties, either...
For field hockey, u have to hold ur right hand on the "shaft" (hehe) and ur left on the top of it... and u hit with the flat part.... but if ur a lefty, u have to do the same thing... not the other way... mellow.gif

And i wonder what you do when you play the violin/viola/cello.... since u have to bow with it with ur right hand...

I play the violin. It's not that hard to play the violin if you're left-handed...not for me, anyway.

when i was little, my uncle would always ask me why i would always make my paper go diagonally when i wrote, instead of making it straight...so whenever i would try to make my paper straight, my handwriting would go really bad...><

Go to school in China! Most everything is written in columns from right to left. It sucks for me since I'm a rightie.

Of course, it would help if you knew how to write it. Because it would be just weird if you wrote like that in English. =\

Make a petition that tells the schools to get new desks, individual desks that don't have chairs attached to them. And there are a lot of scissors these days with equal sized finger holes. As for the computer mouse, look for a left-handed version.

All this can be done, it's just a big inconvenience. But if everything was leftie-wise then righties would complain, and the population of righties is higher than lefties, so isn't it just easier to go with the majority? (<-- That made no sense).

Actually being left handed in China is very very bad. You would not be able to function correctly to the extent that parents have to smack the "leftness" out of you when you're a baby.

And it's like, 300% harder to write characters when you're left handed, as strokes are made from left to right. That makes writing characters extremely frustrating and yucky!

I don't quite agree with this. Hello, at least the ink won't smudge that way when you're writing from right to left... lol. But nowadays even Chinese write horizontally from left to right... too bad for lefties. pinch.gif

Although I'm a rightie, but I remember I sat with left-handed people a few times in school... with me on the left and the leftie on the right. You can picture that now. So, everytime we need to write something, our elbows crash and both of our handwriting gets all fudgy and messed up. lol

I'm not sure you understand.

Yes, modern chinese is now written from left to right on a PAPER. But when you write a CHARACTER, you start a stroke from the left and draw to the right. It is DIFFICULT for lefties, TRUST me.

And when you write Chinese...no part of your hand should be touching the paper anyways...how did people write calligraphy if they kept their hands on the surface??

[EDIT] Sorry if this sounded bitchy...I feel bitchy right now. I just hate it when people say stuff that is ignorant. Especially when you don't have to go through the situation. Argh.

And yes, lefties and righties sitting next to each other is a frustrating situation. But I rarely get that problem now since I know how to save space on my left side.

left handed people die sooner because they are using the wrong side of their brains. and it causes complications. because certain information is stored in each hemisphere, and they sort of shifted things a bit. im in AP psychology but i got a 34% on that test so maybe im inaccurate. "Oh my god, I have to write the character for "1" from left to right! THE END OF THE WORLD IS COMING."

Suck it up. If you have to deal with so much other problems, like scissors or smudging, don't you think by now writing would be no problem? If you think writing Chinese characters with your left hand is unnatural, then why do you write like that at all?

Speaking of ignorance...

Are you even Chinese at all? NO ONE writes Chinese with pencil like they write Chinese with a brush. Chinese writing is NOT calligraphy. Calligraphy is an art, an art with a certain technique. It requires hands off the surface.

MODERN CHINESE PEOPLE DO NOT FOLLOW THE CALLIGRAPHY TECHNIQUES TO WRITE A SIMPLE SENTENCE FOR HOMEWORK. PEOPLE WILL LOOK AT YOU LIKE YOU ARE SOME CHINESE WANNABE.

You're asking if I'm Chinese or not? Yes, I'm Chinese. Writing correctly is important for me because I'm in Chinese school and have the class for high school. It's important to go left-->right because that's the correct way to do it, and it helps me remember how the stroke order is.

THE END OF THE WORLD IS COMING? Why are you inflating the situation? I have no problem with using scissors with my right hand, and smudging does happen to me, especially if the ink is not fast dry.

I NEVER said writing characters with your left hand is unnatural. WHEN THE FCUK DID I SAY THAT? I said it was fcuking frustrating.

NO ONE write Chinese with pencil like they write with a brush? WHERE THE FCUK did you get that statement?! That sentence itself is IGNORANT. The fact that you asked me if I was Chinese by DEFINITION is IGNORANT! Calligraphy is art. OK, yeah, I take Calligraphy for art class, that's another reason left-->right is important. Chinese writing may not be calligraphy, but Chinese writing OBSERVES RULES. Like, Oh I DON'T KNOW, maybe like how you write the character correctly?

I think you're incredibly rascist. "CHINESE WANNABE" "Are you even Chinese." I haven't mentioned race in any part of my posts before this, I haven't asked anyone if they were Chinese, yet you DECIDE to add race into it. Oh! I see, just because someone isn't Chinese, they CANNOT learn Chinese, or observe and publicly talk about its rules? You may not say you are denoting these statements, but by your post, that is what you are telling me.

Ignorance. Let's see which one of us is more ignorant on this matter. The person who is left handed and takes Chinese class and calligraphy. Or you.

[EDIT] GET off your FCUKING high horse for GOD SAKES!

I know writing right to left is wrong, so get your f*cking ass off my back about it.

I'm not inflating the situation, it's called SARCASM. I'm saying, if you've been left hand dominant your whole life, then how is it hard to write from left to right? Keep in mind, English is also written left to right, how come people don't complain about that?!

Fine, if you hate the word unnatural so much, let me replace that with "frustrating".
QUOTE
If you think writing Chinese characters with your left hand is frustrating, then why do you write like that at all?

Sorry, but after I changed that sentence, it still makes sense and doens't change the meaning of my sentence.

Okay, you're right. Saying that NO ONE writes Chinese with a pencil like they write with a brush is wrong, because everyone is different. But just because SOME people may write like that, doesn't make it RIGHT. I thought someone like you so hung up on character correctness would catch that. All I find you doing is constantly telling me how writing left to right is correct, when that is completely irrelevant to the situation at hand.

Tell me, how is saying that practicing the wrong Chinese writing techniques RACIST? I never insulted any one group of people in my post. I didn't say ANYTHING about how "Chinese Wannabe" was pointed at a group of people. Isn't it appropriate for me to address the fact that this is about Chinese culture? Because, YOU were the one who said "writing Chinese characters from left to right is frustrating", and YOU were the one who implied people DO write normally like they do in calligraphy. If this isn't about Chinese culture, I don't know what is.

And isn't it correct to learn something CORRECTLY? I didn't say someone not Chinese couldn't learn Chinese! I'm getting pissed at the fact that people don't open their eyes and OBSERVE - if you want to learn Chinese, learn it the right way. If you're not Chinese but can still give me true reasons and thoughtful observations about Chinese culture, then sure, I'll give you that respect. But if you're not Chinese and give me all this crap stereotype sh*t that isn't true, of course I won't give you any respect.

Because I'm sorry, sweetie, I am too LEFT HANDED, I TAKE A CHINESE CLASS, AND I ALSO TAKE CALLIGRAPHY.

Maybe you should get your facts straight before you go around accusing people.

have you noticed how the world is completely against left handed people?

school desks- as if those desks arent uncomfortable enough, lets just put the arm rest only on the right side, which makes writing with your left hand completely akward

sissors- cutting with sissors and getting straight lines or good curves is just hard

computer mouses/mice/meeces- theyre on the right, which although over time you adjust, it still makes drawing steadily difficult, especially when vectoring, which might just account for part of the reason im so terrible at it

writing left to right- with our writing system, moving you hand left to right with your right hand is quite easy because you can pull it along, where as lefties have to push their hand along the paper, which takes more energy, is slower, and it gets the side of your hand rediculously dirty because it rubs the paper and smears the lead/ink

see, its not easy, and its not fair. we should start a left handed peoples support activist group, or something of the sort. i mean sure, i may be able to get a scholarship for it, but thats about the only advantage. this unfair treatment of left handed people is unjust, and at the very least they should provide some lfet handed desks

GAWD i totally agree. I'm a lefty. 'Nuff said. rolleyes.gif

QUOTE
I know writing right to left is wrong,  so get your f*cking ass off my back about it.

QUOTE
if you want to learn Chinese, learn it the right way.

You say I should get off your back about correct stroke order, yet you say people should learn Chinese correctly. But in your previous post you denote that it's fine to write right to left and that it doesn't matter if you write incorrectly in a sentence for homework. Contradictory.

QUOTE
I'm not inflating the situation, it's called SARCASM. I'm saying, if you've been left hand dominant your whole life, then how is it hard to write from left to right?

Oh, sarcasm. Don't you know, you inflate the situation when you use sarcasm? Example: "Oh! You stubbed your toe! OMG! OHHHH NOOO! IT'S ALLLLL OVER" That was sarcasm, but you inflate the situation by using it.

Yea, I'm left-handed, and writing strokes left--->right is a particular deficiency of mine. I'm not you. You're not me. You need to stop being an arrogant a-hole.

QUOTE
English is also written left to right, how come people don't complain about that?!

Read this thread again, someone has complained about writing English left--->right. Get your facts straight before you go accusing people.

QUOTE
Fine, if you hate the word unnatural so much, let me replace that with "frustrating". -- Sorry, but after I changed that sentence, it still makes sense and doens't change the meaning of my sentence.

Ooooh, the sentence makes sense. Congrats on correct grammar?? I already answered this question. You need to look it up. Get your facts straight before you go accusing people.

QUOTE
Okay, you're right. Saying that NO ONE writes Chinese with a pencil like they write with a brush is wrong, because everyone is different. But just because SOME people may write like that, doesn't make it RIGHT. I thought someone like you so hung up on character correctness would catch that.

People write as if they were the same, some people don't. Ok. What are you trying to prove for your argument? Seriously, help me out here.

QUOTE
All I find you doing is constantly telling me how writing left to right is correct, when that is completely irrelevant to the situation at hand.

Irrelevent to the situation? Then what have you been arguing about? It's the point of the argument! The original poster didn't understand my argument, so I clarified for him/her. Then you posted about how bitchy I was that I was whining about writing strokes from left--> right. That is why you're arguing with me in the first place. Irrelevent? NO! Because it is the catalyst for this argument.

QUOTE
Tell me, how is saying that practicing the wrong Chinese writing techniques RACIST?

I said you're racist because you keep using "Chinese" in the context of race. "Are you even Chinese?" Why do you even need to know? Maybe I could be a Caucasian, and know about Chinese writing. "Chinese wannabe" cmon, that's stereotypical. You're saying Chinese people in general do calligraphy? Stereotyping. Stereotyping using the context of race = racist.

culture? wtf? this is about the Chinese language.

QUOTE
! I'm getting pissed at the fact that people don't open their eyes and OBSERVE - if you want to learn Chinese, learn it the right way.

Then don't be all bitchy at my post about me whining about how hard it is to write CORRECTLY.

I REALLY don't want your respect. Maybe yesterday. But after this fiasco. meh You're an arrogant girl who thinks the world is hers to answer. You're arguments are pointless as you don't even know what was the catalyst for the entire argument.

Oh! You are left handed? Good for you. Take a Chinese Class? Kewl. Do Calligraphy? That's great, too. You can write left -->right with Chinese character strokes? Congrats. Maybe you're better than me. But that doesn't give you the excuse to be all arrogant, and tell me to stop complaining about how being left handed is inconvenient for ME.

Get OFF your HIGH HORSE! Before you fall and break a leg.

What the f*ck? I'm saying, I KNOW that it's left --> right in the sense that I know that's correct. Not in the way that I KNOW it because you tell me so much. How on earth does that contradict when I say, Left to Right is correct, so learn Chinese correctly! How?!

QUOTE
Yea, I'm left-handed, and writing strokes left--->right is a particular deficiency of mine. I'm not you. You're not me. You need to stop being an arrogant a-hole.

Hey, I was just wondering, considering how illogical that is. Don't need to be such a b*tch about it.

QUOTE

Excuse me, I don't believe I was accusing anyone of anything in that statement. And what I meant by it was, if writing left to right is so damn hard for you, why aren't you complaining about English? I was referring to YOU, which I should have written.

I said that frustration = unnatural, dumbass. You said frustration doesn't mean unnatural but now you're saying I'm just pointing out the obvious. WTF?

QUOTE

*Sigh*. Okay. NOW LISTEN UP.
Some people write like they would in calligraphy. Some people write like they would if they wrote with a pencil. You, here, are going ballistic over the fact not EVERYONE writes like that with a pencil. I agree with that. But it doesn't make it right, and I believe in correctness (see above).

It's irrelevant because I was talking about writing with Calligraphy technique and writing with a pencil technique. While you blabbed on about how important Left --> Right is. I was referring ONLY to writing technique and NOT Left --> Right. Irrelevant? Nah. <--And since you're so horrible at catching sarcastic statements, that was one.

I still don't understand. That's not racist. Please, look it up. "Chinese Wannabe"? I'll admit that's a bit racist, but stereotypical? I never said that all caucasians are "Chinese Wannabes" or anything like that. I only implied that "Chinese Wannabes" try to be Chinese and do it incorrectly...which is precisely what a Chinese Wannabe is.

And when the f*ck did I say every Chinese person does calligraphy? QUOTES, PLEASE.

I agree, I am arrogant and I think the world is for me to answer. But if my answers make sense, are logical, and are correct, I don't see any problems with that. I'll respect the person who can prove me wrong, but obviously that won't be you.

I never told you to stop complaining about how being left handed is inconvenient. I only asked why do you think so. I was only curious because I am left handed and I know a great deal of people who are also and don't have your problems. And if my curiousity comes off as arrogance, well, I really don't know what to do about that.

Anyway, I write with my right hand.. but I cut with my left hand. I can't cut anything straight with my left hand because the scissors feel wierd on my hand. Not only that, but I once bought a pair of lefties scissors. And my question is.. Why do lefty scissors NOT cut?!?!. Especially at school, the lefty scissors I use never cut.. they just bend the paper... Haha. It's strange... blink.gif You see, they are trying to get lefties to change to righties!

don't lefties also have to deal with the wires of spiral notebooks digging into their hands?

i'm glad i'm a righty. _smile.gif

Right-handed people deal with the wires of the spiral notebooks on the left side. wink.gif

I'm both, but the majority of the people living are right-handed. Basically, they still give out left-handed junk for lefties.

o.O And they die? Just read it, too. ummm.. that's sad. we should do something!! =]
I heard that lefties were more smarter and creative. thumbsup.gif

im' not sure what to call myself!

half the things i do with my left
and half the things i do with my right

but its weird. like i would write, brush teeth, use spoon with my left.
but i throw, kick, jump, punch, use scirros with my right. although when doign the highjump i'd jump from the left, which is where lefties jump from.
oh well i consider myself left.

i'm not asian... and i take chinese and i was told that writing would be very difficult. but its never been a problem so i have no idea what people are talking about.

whoever said that lefties die 9 years sooner than righties? wtf. how are you suppose to calculate that? people die at different ages. do you just assume that when a leftie dies that they could have been 9 years older? wtf!? it makes no sense.

also, whoever said that lefties die sooner because they use the wrong side if their brain is a dumbass. since when have humans used that side of their brain that they use the most? thats not how the brain works. everyone uses both hands in their life, i doubt being lefty or righty has any effect on your life at all. unless you are so stupid that you kill yourself.

and with the whole smudgin ink on the hand thing. that use to be a problem for me in elementary school but i dont really hold my hand in a position to do that anymore. so its cool

left handed people die sooner.  it's true.

Agreed. Righthandedness is a dominant gene that will eventually cover out lefties.

In reply to your rant...
The world is mostly filled with righties. It is just a hassle to set aside 10% of your materials just for left handers. I mean, if I had the time and patience I would allow this space for lefties, since it's not their fault they use their left hand. But this is reality. Left handers fix things up themselves. maybe that's why many organized leaders are left handers.
