FTP is defined as a protocol that allows users to copy files between their local system and any system they can reach on the network.

In simpler terms, you can use ftp to upload files from your comp, and make it accessible for the world wide web. Let's say you have a subdomain, like http://juiceisgood.retroness.com

If they enable you to use ftp, you can use your ftp address to log in, then you can upload files and whatever file you may have will turn out like this:
http://juiceisgood.retroness.com/mydumbpic.jpg

Hope that helps.

ftp means file transfer protocol. its used to upload websites like domains or subdomains. some freeservers do aloow you to use ftp but not that many. if you want a subdomain that theres a 99.9 percent chece your gonna have to know ftp. its fairly easy you just need an ftp program i use smartftp. you really just transfer file from your computer to the web

Well it's basically like when you use upload images or files, you transfer files from your computer to the web/your FTP server. If you would like to learn more or download FTP you can visit http://www.smartftp.com or http://www.cuteftp.com
