I don't hate all rap...just some artists, like 50 cent.

1. His songs are exactly the same to me. "I got shot, nigga. f**k dat, nigga. im f**kin awesome, nigga. NIGGA WHATTTTTTT DRINK HOS NIGGA SLUTTTTT SEX FUCKKK" sorry for the language though.

2. I can't stand hearing ppl rap about hoes and getting with women and being rich.

Uhm, that's all. Hope I'm not offending anyone.

1. its not music.. it takes a very small amount of talent to come up with a few notes repeated over and over again, and then talking fast with it... all it is a gazillion different ways of saying "i'm a pimp, i have a lot of sex, i've been shot a thousand times and im still alive, im on drugs... and did i say i like sex?"

2. every... single... last... song sounds the same. theres not exactly much variation. even within the SONG its all the same. its like a contest on how many times you can say "yeah" within 2 minutes.

3. the ghetto-ness is getting really old. maybe a select few of these people have actually lived in a ghetto, and had to withstand the hardships of living there. but the others? maybe they didnt start off rich, but i doubt very much they were living in the streets. so they need to STOP ACTING LIKE THEIR GHETTO. in the ghetto, you don't wear "bling" thats worth thousands of dollars and probably weighs thousands of pounds.

1. The way it influences how people act and how they dress. Just because you like rap doesn't entail that you should grab your crotch and call women ho's. Its become more of a lifestyle than it is a form of music.

2. The way the lyrics have no reflection on real life ... and I'm not talking about the lives of rappers. Not everyone drives a hummer and has millions of dollars.

3. The way that it has become pop culture to like rap.

And its not to say that I am a huge hater of rap .... I can respect some rappers like Jay-Z for instance ... but once people like 50-cent come along, it sickens me

I TOTALLY hate rap.

1. Yes, there is no talent whatsoever, and you are right. What do you really have to do? Have a 'flow' It doesnt make sense to me, and you pump up a DJ machine, and you get your song. However, with rock and such you spend soo much time writing your songs, on guitar or whatever.

2. So ghetto, giving the community that gangsturr stuff. Its so stupid, why do I walk on the street and see people sayin 'Pimp, you my baby girl' and such. Its not english, and not proper. It takes nothing, and its like rotting us.

3. Theres no originality. Ever heard two rap songs and thought they were the same. All you do is change the beat abit and you got yourself a new song. Do you see how easy it is to whip up a song.

4. Nothing makes sense. Why is it that I listen to it, and I hear something about falling inlove and then something about chicken and whatever? Its so irrelivant, but not everyone does this.

5. Not everyone has a message in their music. Like THATS THE WHOLE FREAKING POINT OF MUSIC. MESSAGE TO FANS AND ORDINARY PEOPLE! but all you hear is stuff like, being gangsta, being in the club, being a pimp, having ladies. ITS ALL THE SAME SHIZ.

there. I have more reasons, but itd takee a really long post. I despise rap.

meh; just as long as it has a good beat i'm happy. ^_^

it's more of dance music than "sit-at-home-analyze-every-word-in-the-lyrics" music ^_^

music : defined scientifically as sound following a pattern, lyrics dont have to be involved, what about classical music = zero lyrics, does it haev no meaning also? It's jsut for entertainment, liek when your out and stuff; if it doesnt have a good beat and has crappy lyrics its shiz; but most rap sonds have evolved to where they eitehr have one or the other.....

1) It's all the same.. just partying for the most part. Yes, there are some that differ, but overall.. it's about partying, drugs, sex, etc.

2) They're not smart-sounding.. they just repeat and repeat and repeat. It gets old.

3) The beats are annoying.

Good enough for you?

1. Im just not digging the rap image... Oh yeah lets wear baggy pants and sag em down to our knees.... Lets all carry a glock and nine cuz its in the songs. It jsut gets really annoying seeing them in stuff that i personally think looks rediculous. Im not gonna even mention the whole "BLING BLING" thing and how they go overboard with it... Wearing a nicklace that hangs down to your waist isnt cool, and dont even get me started on the platnum teeth

2. The lyrics and stuff just dont fit me... Im not into the whole nigga and shot the cops, or smoke weed everyday kinda thing. Alot of kids listen to that and i wonder if the artist realizes how much kids take note on wht the lyrics say.

3. Its gets boring when you cant even sing along with the song...

1. Most of it is just talking, saying the same shit over and over with a beat in the background... wheres the talent in that?

2. Most of the lyrics are ignorant and egocentric, mostly talking about women, cars, cash, and how tough the rapper is.

3. Its not my kind of music.

And who's to say that they are "flowing"?

Did you ever think that just mabye they write it down then just read it off in the recording room? And just to make you happy, I have heard tupac... it still sucks to me.

Could it be that mabye some people just dont like that kind of music? Deal with the fact that not everyone is going to agree with your opinions. =]

Ok... everyone here is talking about mainstream rap.

Rap started off as something great. There was a message one time or another and it used to be more influential. Rappers spoke to the youth who were growing up in these ghettos hustling and what not and spoke about things they could relate to, things to give them hope, things to motivate/encourage them to do better things with their life. Their lyrics appealed to these young people going through hard times because they could identify with it. A lot of these rappers either grew up in it, witnessed it, or just knew a lot about it and just wanted to appeal to them or even just give others a glimpse of what its like in the "hood". Sometimes, it was just all about creating positive feel good music that "ghetto" youth could get down to to escape the negative environment they live in everyday. Then rap became more and more popular and a lot of rappers blew up and got rich, and now that's all that they can rap about because it sells. You have to understand that A LOT of these rappers came out of NOTHING or very little and now that they're making a lot of money, they're just trying to stick to the formula so that they continue to be rich, successful, and something instead of nothing... even if it means that now instead of being a positive influence, they've become negative and have "sold out" to hollywood and fame and are no longer being true to the streets.

Its sad. I grew up listening to rap and hip-hop music and it hasn't always been this materialistic, superficial, and immoral. But unfortunately, commercial rappers find this way to be the easiest way to make a buck and no longer try to appeal to the majority of their listeners, only to themselves and to those who live rich and famous lifestyles like them. Its the public's fault for buying this stuff...

Good thing there are still rappers who stay true to the roots of rap music and haven't sold out... Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, The Roots, etc. If you want to listen to good rap music, try listening to different artists.

----

And everyone who says its not hard to "rap" are ignorant. You obviously know nothing about what goes into writing these verses, and just the whole style of delivering it. It's much more complicated than you think. Don't you think we'd all be rich right now if it really were that simple. There is an art to rapping, and MOST people don't know it well, including a lot of famous "rappers" themselves.

1. "rappers" have almost no talent what so ever. dont even try to tell me they do. Its not that hard to talk.

2. the beats are awful. they annoy the crap out of me.

3. its so damn ANNOYING! everytime a rap song plays on the radio I change it right away..its so stupid.

4. most rap these days is all about sex, drugs, violence..and the music videos degrade women. if there is "good rap" why dont we hear it?

5. I just dont like people who try to act all gangster-ish, it bugs me.

oops, you only said 3 reasons. I just dislike rap so much that I couldnt stop _smile.gif

Yes it is sad, I used to listen to Run DMC when i was younger. I've heard the Roots before, I guess I'll check out the other guys you listed.

But most rap today is terrible.

1. The lyrics are materialistic are "I GOT ICE, DOLLAR BILLS, CARS BLING BLING!"

2. The lyrics condone violence/immoral behavior "I F***ED YOUR WIFE! I'M A PIMP! I GO ON SHOOTING SPREES!"

3. Rap music has changed many kids I know for the worse. I had many friends who were nice and reserved people, but when their friends started listening to rap music, they started acting "gangsta."

Alright....I totally understand what your talking about Roxanne(sp? sorry I'm not really awake this morning) But mainstream rap is basically all there is today. That's what everyone's reffering to. All 'mainstream' rappers talk about today is how women are 'hoes' and how they're 'pimps', 'Look I f*cked your girlfriend, I'm such a player' When did those words become part of everyday language? Are they in the dictionary?

I listened to rap and hip hop a few years back. Then rappers like 50 cent came along. So maybe he grew up in the ghetto, but EVERY song is about that. Some of the rappers didn't even grow up in the ghetto, but they still lie in their raps about 'how hard' life was. Yeah, how hard it was to have money and live in a somewhat NICE house. That's not the ghetto. The ghetto is usually a neighborhood that has a lot of crime. Full of gangs. Grafitti everywhere. When your scared of going outside cuz you might get jumped or something.

Hell, I LIVE in the ghetto. Last week there was a guy who stabbed someone and then drove down my street crashed into my neighbor's car and sped away. My school used to have HUGE gang problems in the area so we switched to uniforms. We can't have lockers cuz they think we have guns. My mom is afraid to let to ride my bike down to my aunt's house, which mind you is right down the street. Literally like 2-3 minutes on a bike. Now I want you to tell me where I live isn't a bad neighborhood. If someone rapped about something like that then you know what? that's fine.

That was a little off topic, but I'm just giving you an example.

QUOTE
U guys dont like rap because u guys dont know alot about rap..simple as that

You don't like my music and maybe you don't understand it. And that's okay. I don't understand why it's oh so important to rap about being a 'pimp' but okay...

1) songs are all about sex, whores, money, whores, etc.

2) not a big vocabulary. ex: lil jon: WHAT!!! WHAT!!!

3) lifestyle- bad influence

that only shows that you've heard mainstream rap.

what about rappers like the ones roxy mentioned? some better known artists like nas, kanye west, 2pac, and even eminem have a lot of good songs. if you listen to a wide variety of their work, it goes a lot deeper than sex, whores, money, etc. listen to some eminem. his vocabulary range is actually quite big. listen to sing for a moment, and some other things... they can actually be really inspirational.

i agree with you if we're talking about 50cent or lil jon or chingy. i hate that kind of rap.

but you really shouldn't stereotype.

^^^this is probably the only legitimate reason so far...

but not ALL rappers are "Money, Cash, Hoes"..they may have a couple songs hear and there but u have to listen beyond what the radio plays--because the radio plays what THEY want to play and what THEY think will sell..which is Money and Sex.

soo..saying that rappers have no talent is being ignorant. saying SOME rappers have no talent, i'd probably agree with you there.

most rappers dont have much of a flow, and they're juss talking basically.

all the rap is about girls, money, getting 'some', and showing off with all the bling.

using the 'crunk words' or whatever.

i really do like rap but some rappers are juss spoiling it for the others. doesnt send much of a message but get rich and you'll get laid? eminem, tupac, kayne west, and few others are rapping more then juss girls and money... about life, their experiences and things.

meh; just as long as it has a good beat i'm happy. ^_^

it's more of dance music than "sit-at-home-analyze-every-word-in-the-lyrics" music ^_^

music : defined scientifically as sound following a pattern, lyrics dont have to be involved, what about classical music = zero lyrics, does it haev no meaning also? It's jsut for entertainment, liek when your out and stuff; if it doesnt have a good beat and has crappy lyrics its shiz; but most rap sonds have evolved to where they eitehr have one or the other.....

We're talking about making it big, and being mainstream. Having a pattern, writing a song with no words, nothing to give to the community, is nothing. Youre getting paid for this.

I am 99.99undefined% sure that noone will read this as this is on the 3rd page.

I hate contemporary rap.

Contemporary.

I'm watching VH1's Don't Wanna Stop: 30 Years of Rap History.
And ya know, all the REAL MC's, the one actually expressing wut they think about the ghettos, their life, society, etc. are worth it. They should be remembered as talented people.

And then there are the contemporary rappers. 50 cent, ja rule, chinggy, lil'jon, east side twins, etc. They talk about the money, the grls, the pop pop pop ima gangsta dun mess wit me (altho I jus haf 4 bouncer bodyguards follow me around everywhere). It's generic. It's unentertaining. It's a softcore pron video mixed with violence and useless partying.

I just wanna support what i just said:

Ja Rule: I do believe he was actually born quite rich. So me makes some albums about the grlsgrlsgrls, $$$, and poppopsniff. He makes it big talking fast. He can't sing for crap. (If anyone remembers that song he made feat. a grl, i dunt)

50 Cent: He was born poor rite? That's what most people think, i think so too. But look at him. He made a video that compares the American black market/gangs with the Triads, Italian Mafia, and the Japan Gang (I'm sorri, iforgot their name). American gangs just shoot each other and act tough in front of each other, and maybe sell some sniffsniff to some random customer. BUt the other int'l gangs like Triads, andthe Mafia are organized crime gangs. They KNOW how to use hteir gang members wisely.. (oops..tangent) anyways, he makes it big talking about beign shot alot, (I dont doubt he got shot in the mouth? his lil lisp..but i dont believe the 9x shot thing). He shows alot of skin w/ the grlsin his videos. So superficial, not what Tupac wanted rap to really be.

And then rap about sex. I don't wanna bother. It's superficial, soemthing rap wasn't meant to be by the founders.

and I admit: I like music based on its melody more than lyrics..so yea. Rap doesnt have much melody.

Exactly. That guy= WHY IS HE FAMOUS? He chews gum, while he raps. His voice is scratchy and I hate it. Psh, and he released like two albulms in one year, which was clearly all rushed. Its obvious when you've gone down the drain..

i dont get all the people that r sayin that rap takes no talent, and all the lyrics arent the same, i think when most ppl think about rap its about like "pop rap" as in usher wit lil jon, and stuff like that. and i think most ppl don't understand it cuz you havent had to live like them, now i noe that all the rappers havent had to live out on the streets and stuff, and i havent really either, but i have had a harder life than i think alot of the ppl here, so i can relate to a lot of the lyrics cuz rappers just talk about how their life has been. and i noe alot of the mainstream rappers rap about hos and money and stuff but they all dont, like listen to Common's The Light and i will admit that rappers like 50 and and ppl do give rap a bad name, but there r other rappers who rap about real stuff and not jus how much money they have and stuff

hey its my 100th post yay haha happy.gif

Mainstream Rap has just gotten into the bling bling and all the money making stuff, rather than the true meaning of music anyway. Money and music are two seperate things.. but rap makes them seemingly intersect. And no, the vocabulary is small and repetitive, thus the songs can be longer.

^ I second what you just said.

Basically, the poeple who posted here who said all rap is about bling bling crap are referring to most of the mainstream hip hop that gets played heavily, unfortunately, on the radio and MTV/BET. There are some good MAINSTREAM hip hop like The Roots, Talib Kweli, and Kanye West (although he isn't that good as a lyricist, he sends postive messages).

Less than 10% of the hip hop I listen to can be called "mainstream." There are a lot of good hip hop artists in what we call the UNDERGROUND, because they aren't on a major label, don't get much advertising, are less reachable, or get very little radioplay.

There's a formula in the "big, bad" music industry. You have to get artists that have some sort of background that makes the audience interested (I GOT SHOT NINE TIME), or they have some kind of appeal, whether it's by their looks, who they partner with (Chingy used to be with DTP), or you grab all the producers who are hot at moment and get them to produce a song on your album.

Yeah, so this thread should really be called Mainstream Rap Haters like someone mentioned already,
