fujitsu, fujitsu, fujitsu, I believe that's the company that makes the lifebooks right? I'm too lazy to look it up. If they make the lifebooks then they have been rated fairly highly by sources such as, C-Net, and PCWorld. The Lifebooks are also suppose to be really thin and light, a plus for college going students.

But if you're on a budget, I suggest Avertec, I think that's how it's spelled. For under $1k, you get the following, AMD XP 2000+, 256 (or 512) mb ram, 40gb harddrive? not sure, DVD/CD-RW combo drive, all in a 4pound, a little over an inch package. Oh yes, and it has wireless-G. Lots of people have posted positive reviews on this laptop, takes a little bit of getting used to though, but it's suppose to be a pretty nice one.

Like everyone else said, you can also go with a Dell, or HP, but if you want budget gaming power in a laptop, get an eMachine. Highly rated by Computer Gaming World, it's a sweet little rig that will play all your games, just maybe not at all highest settings but it's still pretty sweet. Plus it's cheap compared to other laptops of the same caliber.

gor skool.

(Typing papers basically, surf the net, download stuff)

All u need is a cheap cheap cheap as$ comp.

I got a 500mhz, 256mb, 16video mb.

RUNS smooth and does all my school work top notch.

IF YOU GAME< then hell yeah get a new comp.

Typing and surfing doesn't require a new comp... Just new software. Lol

There's currently a pretty good deal on a Dell Inspiron 600m from Dell Home. This is a nice little laptop that is about 4-5lbs, it also comes with a free wireless internet card, and upgrade to 512mb ram, you can also save another like $50 by downgrading the processor to a Celeron-M but I wouldn't recommend it.

Inspiron 600m Pentium® M Processor 715(1.50GHz/400MHz FSB) 14.1-in XGA, 32MB Video B15G3HN [221-5975] 1

Then there's a $150 rebate which brings the price to almost $950. A pretty good price, also when you consider free shipping which saves $49 and also it's from Dell Home where many places can get it without tax.

Coupon code for 15% off is required: H4RC$H$5NKWBDW

This code can be applied to any laptop over $999 before rebates.

Not your cup of tea or too expensive? No problem there's also the following, less ram but more processing power, though more of a desktop replacement than mobile travler:
