it's obvious that .png is the best.
png are unlike the others. it caculate where should the color be, it doesnt use pixel, it caculate.

Ok here's how it goes:

PNG = best quality, largest file size (sometimes over 1 mb, bad for 56k people)

JPG = medium quality, medium file size (usually 100-200 kb)

GIF = worst quality, smallest file size (usually under 100 kb, and is also the only one that supports animation)

Depends on what you want to do. i use GIF for transparent images. Jpg for web layouts and pictures. PNG for high quality images.

yepp that about explains it, but it's also important to note there's png8 and png24. check here for more info, 'cause i lazy ;x haha i don't know if people can really see the difference, but for the people with good monitors, you can see the gradient differences between png8 and png24 ;o

I usually use PNG. If the image is small and doesn't have too many colors I just use Optimized GIF. I use Optimized JPG when I post pictures on my Xanga, since it doesn't take as long to load as PNG and holds all of the color (unlike GIF).

Well, it really depends on the size of the image and how many colors it has. You just have to use your best judgment on what file type is best for your particular image.

I use JPG the most... and it's by far the best. I stay away from PNG and only use GIF when I make transparent images.

With photoshop, you can adjust how the JPG, PNG, GIF, etc. quality. When set on the highest (12), a JPG can look as great as any PNG. The only problem is that it's a huge file size and that it can take a while to load on a 56KB (dial-up) modem (when the quality is set 12 at least)

So I put my vote for JPG.

png is the best becasue it is the equevelent of a photoshop raw file. It is also verylarge, so an uncompressed jpg is next on the list, but then the uncompressed jpeg sized jumps way up.

JPG's can still look good and be downloaded at a reasonable time and speed. Such is why I use them. PNG's look great (tho I've never really saved files as PNG unless I wanted to use them in Flash) but have horrible download time. It took forever to download a PNG when I had dial-up (I have high speed internet now) but JPG's never did. GIF's are the same why when they are animated. (which is why I hate all the animated GIF's on the forum... )

I think that most ppl think PNG is the best is because they see so many crappy quality JPG's. I, on the otherhand, know how (and have seen) to make very good quality JPG's and still have a reasonable download time.

i use gif al the time whenerv i save it as jpeg it gets blurry and whenever i save it as gif its always perfect quality even if it has a lot of colors and its not animated

GIF's can only hold 256 colors so something with millions of colors (ie. photos) would lose lots of quality. A JPG, on the other hand, can hold up to 16.7 MILLION colors. If your JPG's are blurry, then it probably means that your quality is low.

Agreed. When I have a small image with a minimal amount of colors, .gif is the best way to go. I rarely use .png due to its large file size. With .jpg, you just need to learn how to control the settings. When I'm saving in Photoshop using Save for web... I usually choose maybe 80% to 95%(even going as low as 75%) for the quality. That way the image still looks sharp while the file size is an acceptable amount.

Photoshop tells you how long it will take for the image to load with dial-up when you save the image. I find that very helpful when I'm designing and JPG is USUALLY under 5 seconds for a small image.

i like jpg the best because its loads fast while maintaing a good photo quality. when i change pics to gif it makes these marks on the orginal picture that wasn't there before

Png, high quality, plus it can be scaled to any amount without losing that quality. I don't use png all that much though, mainly jpg. I try to make my xanga compatable for all users (all your 56k people!!) grrrrr

I use...usually png. Or I'll use the highest quality setting to set and save as a .jpg. For me a gif is a total NO! I love PNG the most, because it has the same quality as a 24 bitmap but smaller in size. =)

pngs piss me off. the colors change from what i originally wanted them to be... am i the only one who sees this? yes, i'm very picky about color... i could tell a difference in degree of a tone, and if i choose a certain color, i expect it to be the same exact color when i save it ;o yah im' stubborn.
