How much do you think is too much for a dog or cat? Cat's are easy to find free/cheap esp around here, but it seems harder to find dogs.
I went to some pounds and their dogs were anywhere from $200-550. I just never new pound dogs were that much. What's the most expensive pet you own/know? Anyone have a pure bread? |

$290-550 seems wayyyyy to much in my opinion. The pounds in my city [San Diego fyi] have the adoption fees for about $70 for a dog/puppy then like...if it's over 6 years I think the price for the fee gets cut in half.
I've got two dogs...one I got coincidentally b/c my neighbor's dog had puppies, so I bought the chihuahua/poodle when she was 4 months old for like...$5. The second dog is a dachshund (wiener dog)-terrier mix that I adopted at a local shelter for about $70-80 after adoption/licensing fees & taxes. Hope this helps but feel free to ask any more questions ![]() |

All these places were in Joliet, IL.
One place did have regular adoption fees/prices, but just had no puppies for the most part. The other ones must have been making bank off these dogs though. |

The cost of the animal's spay/neuter is included in the adoption fees, in addition to money needed to keep those shelters operating so that irresponsible animal owners (like treschicgeek's neighbor whose dog had puppies) can dump them there when they can't illegally sell them to people. |

I am more set on shelter dogs

I can assure you the dead cats weren't necessary. And the specific shelter I am referring too were pricing the dogs them selves $250+. The fees are not included until you start going through the adoption process. There was really just one shelter that seemed really sketchy. Point of the buckets of dead cats pl0x. |

My apologies for my aforementioned words -- the fact that you were inquiring about pure breeds, puppies, and saying that $200-$500 for an animal was too much (surgeries alone, if needed, run higher than that) made my tail go up. I'm glad that you're set on shelter dogs. That was why I posted the photos... :x By the way, are you visiting non-profit rescue shelters or municipal shelters? The latter should be much cheaper. I went to a dog rescue to check out their facility (it's similar to a rabbit one I support, where they have a store front in addition to their shelter) and discovered that their adoption fee was $450. I actually didn't find it unreasonable considering what was included (spay/neuter, up-to-date vaccinations, free initial vet visit, grooming, behavioral evaluation/healing, etc.) until I saw that they only had small dogs and everything was egregiously overpriced. I hate when places like that get into "rescuing" for avaricious purposes.[/rant] |
