Ok, so I'm in the IB Diploma program. And I was thinking to myself one day: Can the type of music you listen affect your intelligence? Because, for those of you who know people in the IB Diploma Program, they're the "shit" (Quote from counselor). Not that that's a good thing to be proud of, or whatever. (Read people. I never said it was something to be proud of. Seriously). I digress. So, I thought to myself and calculated that the majority of my class listens to rock (or anything non (mainstrem) rap and/or hip-hop). And that the lower classes (no offense) listen to rap and/or hip-hop. I'm not saying EVERYBODY that listens to rap and/or hip-hop is dumb, or even vice versa (meaning that rock doesn't make you smarter). It was just a thought. What do you guys think?

Music does not affect your IQ. Music does affect your health and mood. |

Correlation does not imply causation. Intelligent students may simply be attracted to different types of music than average students.
Anyway, this isn't really a debate, at least not in the context of the Debate Forum, so I'm going to put in The Lounge. |

Ya, I think so. People who listen to mainstream music listen for the beats and shiz. My brother listens to real deep, underground scream music. The lyrics they have in their songs make you think. Anything that makes you think about something in a different way and challenge how you believe or how you see things makes you more intelligent. A lot of music offers lyrics that are very generic and don't have any real meaning. And I think people who are really into music and listen to underground non-mainstream music get a lot out of the lyrics. Ya, that's my take on that.
Me? I listen to mainstream. ![]() |

Intelligence is much, much more than a couple of emo guys writing meaningful lyrics that make you "think". Yes, complex music can give the mind more room to expand its horizons, but you have to have the 'intelligence' to appreciate it in the first place. If you don't possess it, there's no chance in hell you'll give it another chance to actually penetrate your brain and cause a change in your intelligence. Busted on two fronts. Again, correlation =/= causation. It's even a stretch to say that intelligence affects music preference, but the converse is DEFINITELY false. |

Say, let's go with your hypothesis of people who listen to rap and/or hip hop as "less smart."
So, here are a few assumptions: 1) You claim that people who take IB are "the shit" and therefore supposedly, rather intelligent. 2) People in your class, including you, do not listen to rap and/or hip hop. 3) Since people in your class are "smarter" and don't listen to rap and/or hip hop, therefore, it must be the people who are not as smart who listen to rap and/or hip hop. Assuming these assumptions are "correct", especially the dealing with that people in your class, you included don't listen to rap and/or hip hop, how do you explain that you're not exactly doing very well in the IB program? http://www.createblog.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=241440 I mean, afterall, you don't listen to hip hop and/or rap do you? Better get on to listening to some rock or shit. May I suggest classical music instead. How about some Mozart for your math? hm? |

Music doesn't affect your IQ, but your IQ probably affects what music you listen to. aka idiots listen to eminem. of all artists you chose eminem ![]() i listened to eminem, i may not have listened to "we made you" but when i listen to his old verse in 'renegades' for example, i don't see how you could make that statement. because the bulk of eminem's songs (primarily from the past) contain more intelligent lyricism than the majority of other mainstream rap artist have in their songs. not to mention he added a sick flow, (which he is still capable of, look at tim westwood 2009 freestyle) for example drake will never write a "white america". not that white america is an amazingly eloquent song...but its certainly more than what most will put out. so......why eminem again? anywayzzzz, a person's IQ and personal creativity effects what music they listen to...but what about the people that can actually comprehend and assess multiple different genre's of music? and enjoy them for what they are? wouldn't that make that person alittle more interesting than one who can only appreciate one? |

i think its funny how people that "conform" better than others scholastically think they are actually more intelligent than another. (imo there is no such thing as an intelligent human being, because our thoughts and ideals are consistently updated and changed through time and experiences.)
imo....good grades and good marks in school is great and all, but when you get down to it, all it is is reiterated thought. lessons some other human blatanly tells you in the first place, and all you have to do is remember it and take a test answering the same damn questions the teacher already told you. the person with the better grade might just "conform" alittle better than another, take notes, study, obey lol. but that doesn't necessarily mean he/she is more "intelligent" than you. but i think society wants you to believe that though... non the less we need this form of education to survive in this monetary system of ours, and we will always have to listen to society born pricks like the OP thinkin they are the shit. [/end hippie rant] "keep em dumb enough to not question us, but smart enough to do the paper work. " thats my view on education imo |

i just don't get why hip hop is always what gets thrown under the bus. mainstream radio rap...yeah it's dumb often, but mainstream rock isn't any better than radio rap. it's the same bullshit. every single genre has it's good stuff and it has it's shitty stuff. i would definitely question the intelligence of someone who hasn't figured this out yet.
robbi's nickle back is a good example. i don't get how someone can honestly listen to that and then listen to nas and think nickleback is smarter because it's rock. nas is infinitely more lyrically complex than shit like nickleback. |

I'm not one of those smart students. Like I said originally, it's a thought. I wanted to see where people would go with this. Maybe I should have worded this a little more differently. And I said majority. Not all. In fact, our class listens to a WIDE range of music. None stick to a single genre. And when I say rap/hip-hop, I do mean mainstream. I mean, all I've heard them talk about are money, sex, and drugs. Sure, there are few exceptions, but, really? And btw, I do listen to orchestral music. It's nice and soothing. I'm doing fine in the IB program grade-wise, I'm just not sure if I want to waste 2 years on my life trying to get something I probably won't get. |

No, I don't think I'm better than anybody. In fact, I'm just like everyone else. I never meant to imply that I was better. At all. I also didn't mean to offend anyone as well.
So, majority DON'T think that music affects intelligence. Ok. Thanks for your participation folks. ![]() ![]() |

c'mon nate you know a lot of shit you say / believe isn't popular / a shared belief by tons of others.
i agree with both jc & nate, but i'm not always against listening to popular meaningless pop music. some of that shit's just catchy. doesn't mean i listen to the lyrics to be inspired or understand something about someone or listen to something lyrically intelligent in general, but sometimes its just kinda fun. |

lol^ i think it's crazy that people have to defend why they listen to eminem these days
i think back and this is the same guy that was on forgot about dre, and bitch please II with nate dogg, dre, snoop and xzibit. i do miss this eminem tho: QUOTE [Eminem] See I'm a poet to some, a regular modern day Shakespeare Jesus Christ the King of these Latter Day Saints here To shatter the picture in which of that as they paint me as a monger of hate and Satan a scatter-brained atheist But that ain't the case, see it's a matter of taste We as a people decide if Shady's as bad as they say he is Or is he the latter - a gateway to escape? Media scapegoat, who they can be mad at today See it's easy as cake, simple as whistlin Dixie while I'm wavin the pistol at sixty Christians against me Go to war with the Mormons, take a bath with the Catholics in holy water - no wonder they try to hold me under longer I'm a motherf*ckin spiteful, DELIGHTFUL eyeful The new Ice Cube - motherf*ckers HATE to like you What did I do? (huh?) I'm just a kid from the gutter makin this butter off these bloodsuckers, cause I'm a muh'f*ckin renegade *sigh* now there are rappers with colder lyrics than em' but what seperates em' is the way he arranges them. people that can't see that eminem has some intelligence, and talent, are crazy. weezy wont write that shit. but OP i also listen to dubstep and that doesn't even have lyrics so what does that mean ha. |
