i was reading about it today. i haven't even updated to leopard, so i doubt i'll get it. also i read that it won't work on anything older than 2006. i got mine in 2006, but either way that kinda sucks for people before then to know they will never be able to have any more updates

Snow Leopard doesn't have any exciting new features to offer like Windows 7 does (but it's only because Vista is much crappier relative to Leopard). But it makes little tweaks here and there, that culminate to overall better and considerably faster performance (but not for third party apps...yet). Personally I'm willing to pay $30 bucks to free up some space on my hard drive and have stuff run a lot faster.
Also, it's been confirmed that you can upgrade to Snow Leopard without having Leopard to begin with. Just not by Apple cus obv they want you to pay the extra $120. More here: http://lifehacker.com/5347086/confirmed-29...uve-got-leopard Frankly there are many other sites that can give you a clear picture of what's new in Snow Leopard so check it out: Snow Leopard Review: Lightened and Enlightened - Snow leopard review - Gizmodo What You DO Get in Mac OS X Snow Leopard - Snow leopard - Lifehacker Apple - Mac OS X Snow Leopard - Enhancements and Refinements List of applications and their compatibility in SL Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Compatibility List According to that list, Adobe CS3 does work, just with some minor bugs. |

weird. i swear when i was reading about it in the times it said like $170 to go from tiger to snow leopard and that the $30 only applied to people going from leopard to snow leopard because it was essentially just a refinement to leopard.

That's technically true -- but when you buy a new copy of Mac OS X from Apple, you get the full version (not an "upgrade" version, as with, e.g., Windows), so nothing precludes you from installing Snow Leopard if you only have Tiger. It technically violates your Snow Leopard license, but Apple doesn't make you register for Mac OS X, and Mac OS X doesn't have serial numbers, so it's not like Apple would ever find out. |

yea but im starting to agree with butt on this..
it is a service pack cause if you read this: QUOTE that the $30 only applied to people going from leopard to snow leopard because it was essentially just a refinement to leopard. it kinda explains it for itself.

Snow Leopard is a service pack in the same sense that Vista was a service pack for Windows XP, and Windows 7 is a service pack for Vista.

No, it's a service pack in the sense that Vista SP1 was a service pack for Vista.
Also joseph, I can install Vista SP2 over Windows 3.1 if I want. That doesn't make Vista SP2 a service pack for Windows 3.1 |

No, it's a service pack in the sense that Vista SP1 was a service pack for Vista. Um, no. I don't think technologies like Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL are minor (service pack-type) updates, and those two technologies alone are probably worth about $30. A complete 64-bit rewrite of most of the core OS is a pretty big upgrade, too. Besides, how would you know whether Snow Leopard is a "service pack" or not? You're not even a Mac user. By that I mean that updated items in Snow Leopard might appear minor, but are actually pretty important. For example, OS X has long had a feature called Services that is awesome in concept, but not implemented very well. It got a pretty big upgrade in Snow Leopard that is also (arguably) worth $30, at least to some people. But if you're not familiar with Mac OS X, it might not seem like a big deal when you see it in a list of updates. Neither would the Cocoa rewrite of the Finder, but that's a pretty big deal. Plus, if the reports on the performance increases in Snow Leopard are true, that's no minor update, either. On the other hand, let's look at the improvements Vista had over XP:

Slides 12-15 of this Ars Technica discuss two of the biggest new technologies in Snow Leopard: Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL. Both are, in and of themselves, pretty major updates.
For what it's worth, over three years ago I wrote an article that emphasized that Apple should concentrate on underlying technologies, rather than user-level "flair". |

(Finally) picked up my copy today. I'm trying to decide whether I should install it tonight, or wait until the weekend. I'll have to reinstall a bunch of software (*cough* MacPorts *cough*) when I upgrade, which is why I'm hesitant. Oh, and I want to make sure the Perian and Xiph plugins still work with the new QuickTime X -- does anyone have any experience with those in Snow Leopard?
