I saw it at a really cool little theater in Albany, NY, last weekend. It wasn't bad. I thought some parts were pretty witty, and even though it was a pretty stereotypical story, it was entertaining and made me laugh at several parts. It has a very subtle sense of humor about it that I enjoyed. I think my girlfriend was even embarrassed at how much I laughed at certain parts. The humor kind of reminded me of that of Adventureland: subtle and even kind of nerdy, but good.

That said, there were a few things I didn't really like that much about it:
  1. It's told in a non-linear fashion. I really like when writers tell stories non-linearly -- if it plays into the story somehow. But in (500) Days of Summer, it seemed more gimmicky than necessary -- like the writers knew the story was fairly typical and felt a need to "spice it up a bit".
  2. It has a weird voice-over narration in some parts that doesn't add anything to the story. Moreover, it's not clear who the narrator is, and omniscient narrators don't usually work well in movies. Plus the narrator is only around for a select few parts of the film, so when he does talk, the effect is jarring, since it pulls you out of the story.

I'm watching it this Saturday, and I'm so psyched!! I've been wanting to watch this movie since I saw the trailer a couple of months ago, and three of my friends who have watched it all loved it. And come on, you can't go wrong with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel. You just can't.

Anyway, two videos related to the movie (the first is sooo cute):

I still haven't seen Adventureland. I still want to (despite my lack of affection (if you can call it that) for Kristen Stewart). I'm going to keep your points in mind when I watch this because I tend to like non-linear movie plots, too. I'm not really sure about narrators. I guess I'll just have to see.

I didn't expect this movie to make me laugh so much. I guess I was expecting something a little more serious, but I still enjoyed it. I can't decide if I like the narrator or not. I thought he was kind of unnecessary but at the same time, I felt he gave it a certain effect.

i cried when he found out Summer was getting married. /lame

I loved it. I loved it so so much. The Enchanted-esque scene made me so incredibly happy (I wish my life was like that, with people singing and dancing all of a sudden on the streets :D). I do have to agree about the whole non-linear thing though; it was a little bit confusing at first, having to remember what actually happened first and what parts of the movie occurred after the break-up.

Yeah, it was a LOT funnier than I expected! It was ten billion times better than that shit of a movie Funny People I watched a couple of days ago, that's for sure.

I tried to keep Michael's criticism in mind while I was watching the movie, but I honestly did not notice the narrating so much except for at the beginning... which I guess means it didn't bug me haha.

I thought the narrating was cute. It gave it even more of an off-beat type of flavor...if that made any sense. It was an absolutely adorable movie though. I loved the "non-linear" storyline to it. And it was seriously funny. I didn't think i'd laugh this much but it was seriously funny.

The narrating was kind of cheesy, imo. I guess because that "voice" reminds me of something I'd heard in some fairytale-like movie. It wasn't too distracting though. Look at the movie "UP" - actions speak louder than words. There wasn't any narration in the flashbacks from "UP", but there was so much emotion in it.

The fact that the story was not told in chronological order was pretty distracting. It's like, you had to remember what day/number it was when Summer said she just wanted to be friends, at the diner

However, I really liked the subtlety of the jokes and the plot. DEFINITELY a slice-of-life kind of movie. Also, it didn't have a predictable ending, which made it more interesting.

P.S. the whole time I was like, omg why does this Joseph Gordon-Levitt guy look so familiar? Then I remembered he was in [b]3rd Rock from the

P.S. some parts where he smiled, he looked like a slightly-older, skinnier, white-looking version of Kim Bum. Most be the dimples and the chin. hahaha.

a terribly dishonest film that tries very hard to charm its audience; it's kind of like that kid that wants to be your friend and pulls all the stops in order to secure your approval. ultimately, the movie fails when it placates its audience: don't make a movie about how much bullshit greeting cards are when the movie you're making is itself a greeting card.

I kind of agree with Nate about the trying really hard to charm the audience thing. But even so, I didn't find it really annoying like I found it in Away We Go. In fact, I actually found it kind of nice. If that made sense.

It was cutesy, but in a different sort of way. I didn't mind the narration at all, really; I found it endearing.
On the other hand, I could've waited for it to come out on Netflix instead of paying nine dollars to see it.

i mean, how is it "like a greeting card" at all? it's so far away from all of the cliches that are romantic comedies nowadays. it's real and people can relate to it. isn't that what's important?

the problem is that the film is a total fabrication: despite the fact that the film does succeed in portraying a realistically evolving relationship, the film ultimately denies the honest place it naturally grew into & it falls backwards, hard and inexplicably, into a realm of insultingly childish fantasy. our protagonist should have never been proven "right," because he is simply wrong. the movie itself even belittles cinema as a vehicle of love-styled lies, filled with insincerity, like greeting cards.

but, like a greeting card to the audience, 500 days of summer assures us that "although it didn't work out this time, your true soul mate, the one & only, is waiting just around the corner! just don't give up on love!" of course all of the wide-eyed couples watching do not, for a moment, consider that they themselves had not yet already found this fabled "soul mate." the only force working in the film to resurrect the mask of love are the filmmakers themselves, nothing organic or logical support this invocation. it is only the god of the machine which decrees it: name the girl autumn, make her an architect, and put her in the right place @ the right time. it is pure placation, pure stupidity.

Yea I won't see Adventureland because she is in it. I just never have liked her as a actress. Perhaps I'll rent it though...the only person I've actually heard good things about it is from Michael though, haha.

I enjoyed 500 days of summer. I went by myself and saw it, haha. If it wasn't for the two teenagers talking through out the whole movie I probably would have enjoyed it more. I think i enjoyed the music more than the movie though :\
