I wanted to dual boot windows xp and linux mint, so I ran the mint live cd and used the partition editor to shrink the main partition by 8gb. I then installed linux mint in that unallocated 8gb. I thought I would next restart my computer and have a black screen with white text, and I would choose linux mint, or windows xp. But instead there was a linux mint screen that had one option for linux mint, one option for linux mint safe mode and two options for windows xp. So I chose the first one, and it started a hard drive restore?! So finally when it was done it started asking me the questions that it asks when you first install xp! So I did everything and when it got to the desktop it looked like it did when I first got it! Thankfully my files were intact though...
So what happened? And how do I get into linux mint? Because my hard drive is now 8gb smaller. When I restart it boots straight into xp? So what did I do run and how do I fix it? |

Gotta go into mint, modify the boot loader, and add Windows into the loader.
Google.. use it. All that crap you went through... is not native to the Linux that I have used. I haven't tried mint.. I thought that was just a highly lite version of Ubuntu. |

Its the same process that you use to dual boot ubuntu. What distro do you use?
Read again. I said I can't get into mint. when I turn on my computer it goes straight to windows. And I dont know how to modify a bootloader. |

Get on IRC, go into the Mint channel, and ask your question there. And I'm assuming your Mint disc is a Live CD. If it's not, download that, because you're gonna need it in order to gain access to the 2nd partition. |

Mint is one of those distros that babies you through everything. I personally dislike it, but I know a lot of people love it because it comes with all the codecs and plugins like flash preinstalled. I'll stick to my beloved Debian. |

Why debian over fedora? And what user friendly stuff does ubuntu have that debian doesnt? Even I feel like ubuntu is too newbish for me. i havent even tried fedora or debian.

My installation of Debian originally didn't even have a GUI. I still haven't installed sudo.

Its working by the way.
Just when I boot it shows two , windows/nt/2000/xp options. The second one logs in and im almost certain that the first one restores the system automatically like it did last time I havent chosen it. Is there any way to make windows xp top on the list? Cause if I forget to scroll down it boots ubuntu. And im having a really hard time getting my wireless driver to work. |
