Couldnt find a thread like this. Do you turn your computer off at night?
I would also like to hear answers on the geekier side. Which extends the life of your computer the longest? I always turn it off at night because I feel like it needs to rest. Because it gets hot doesnt it? And because I know that some programs that may have memory leaks may be using up all my memory and it wont go back down until I restart. So take the poll and then explain your answer. |

I turn my computer off at night, because it's in my room. And since it's 6 years old it runs a little loud...and it's useless for me to keep it on and not even look at it.

Im not sure if its the same with macs but with pc's if you put it into sleep and then turn it back on it is using memory. Windows hibernate and sleep modes are pretty useless. How much energy does turing off a computer actually save? As much as turning off a light bulb?

i turn off my computer when i'm gone for more than an entire day. usually, i'm back within half a day or quarter of a day at most, since i do use my laptop before and after class and during work.
for the other computers that i don't use daily, they still fall under my 24 hour rule: off if i'm gone for anything more than a day, no for less. i think it's a good balance, energy-wise and time-wise. |

I have my computer connected to a surge suppressor. I Turn off my computer as well as the surge suppressor. They say that you should turn your computer off/on as little as possible to avoid chip creep, however in all my years as a computer tech I have not once seen a case involving chip creep.

wait, how does turning it off and on each day and night put wear and tear? I would think leaving it on 24/7 would.

Turning on a computer sends a brief surge of electricity through the machine, which can eventually wear out circuitry. (However, you'd have to turn a computer on several times a day for it to really have an effect.) |

That didnt help. Joe, I can't help but notice that the majority of the users that frequent this website have a complete lack of respect for you. In fact, to the new user, some of the comments that other members hurl your way seem downright rude and disrespectful, however those who sit back and observe quickly realize you're bringing it upon yourself. Maybe you realize this, and maybe you don't. I'm just going to tell you because this is the last bit of respect I have for you as a human being. The sooner you stop acting like an idiot; the sooner people will actually find respect for you. From this point on, if you do not change when responding to my posts I will treat you the way you clearly wish to be treated. Sincerely, Uronacid |

This is a quote directly from the wiki page you posted: QUOTE Chip creep occurs due to thermal expansion; the contracting and expanding during system heat up and cools down. What makes you think that anyone could explain the concept of "Chip Creep" any better than that? We all know you're more intelligent than this. It's hard to believe you're this stupid. Again, stop acting like an idiot. Are you mentally disabled? I'm just being honest. |

You know what, I don't think I ever actually answered the question. Yes, I do shut off my computer, but only if I'm not going to use it for more than 24 hours. This weekend me and Holly went up to 1000 Islands NY for a mini birthday vacation. I shut-off my computer. :)

Yes, I do. It's usually just common sense, no? I mean, I get to save energy and sleep in peace. The only time I ever leave it on is if A) I watch T.V. and go to sleep without remembering to turn it off (but I do sometimes wake up in the night since it's a little loud or if I randomly get an IM), B) I am downloading a file that would take a long time to download, and C) if I have to design or code something that's important or if it's something I really
