i think you're going the right way as far as neat and not low quality looking stuff. it doesn't look bad. however, i think you're main problem at this point is that you're lacking a direction. you have two different textures, and then the wood pattern, and then another brown color at the bottom and blue navigation and it just kinda looks confusing. midnight manifest...ok so i get the moon, but i don't know where the wood or other browns tie into it.

i wouldn't use that texture behind the heading and on the sides together. it's like they are similar, but not similar, and same color but not the same color. i think if you're set on using a texture you should pick one and go with that. the different elements aren't tying together right now i don't think.

i like wood patterns, but i'm not a fan of them being the background to content sections. i think the really defined black lines make the pattern too busy to be behind text. if i were you, i would go with a solid color or a really quiet pattern behind text because you want people to read that. the text really should be the focus of a content area, not the background. that being said, i usually prefer wood backgrounds to be on the sides/tops of layouts. sorta depends on the wood grain and how smooth it is. i also think they typically look cleaner running vertical rather than horizontal, but that's me.

i don't think you should add a texture to the navigation just because you've already got so many textures going on. have you thought of going darker in general? because this color scheme isn't screaming "midnight" to me.

sorry that's long critique

that's what i feel is wrong there no connection between the ojects and textures.

Yeah the whole layout looks random because of the colors and textures you used. I think the textures you used for the background and header would look good if they weren't brown. Maybe a navy or something. And the fonts you used are all different. Personally I hate designs that use more than one or two fonts because it looks weird and don't look united. But yeah I'd just fix whatever JC said.

Looks much better the second time around (: I think the header text is a bit plain, maybe you could add some stars around it (since the theme seems to be midnight) and perhaps use a different font. Can't think of a font now, I will post again if I think of one.

I think it would look better with the background you used in your first version except in black.

^ Agreed. And maybe play up the content area headers, they just blend in and are a bit boring.
