a. I lost the jumper for a hard drive, because for it to be slave you had to take it out, but now im putting it in its own computer, and I need to set it to cable select! Can you buy a jumper in stores?
b. The computer has a little case that you take out of the case to put in the hard drive, but when I put it in the holes dont a lign with the holes in the hard drive case. Does it have to be screwed in? o and the hard drive case can only hold one hard drive. |

Sadly I think the only store that sells, "jumpers" is CompUSA.
The case itself should have tabs that locks the HDD in. If not, you're gonna need to pull the HDD a little out so that the holes align correctly. I can only assume you have a DELL or a DELL case for that matter. |

Actually its an old emachines. And the hdd sits on the little rack but I cant even lift it and screw it in cause, a it would then have so support, and I cant push it up.
Can I just like wrap tinfoil around the jumpers? haha btw: right now the hard drive is formatted, but what will happpen if i just leave it on slave? |

You need a master (hd0,0) partition or simply a hard drive that's meant to be the primary. |

Ya, this hdd was originally running xp by itself. so does it matter that its set to slave? Or since its the only one will it still work?

Yes it matters. It needs to be set as Cable Select or Master.

Aluminum is super conductive?!
a little off topic, but it does have to do with hard drives. Can I donwload an exe file for a program on one computer and email it, or transfer it with a flash drive and install it on another computer? |

My router works as soon as I plug it in on Mandriva, but it takes a crapton of effort to get it working in Windows. I don't know what's happening there.

Could be 64 vs 32 bit. That's all I can think of right now that would keep any other distro from working.

There all 32 but os's.
And I think both the computers only have 32 bit processors. It just always started loading and then just stayed loading one thing for 20 minutes. |

If it's an Intel processor that's less than a few years old, it's 64 bit.

And Ubuntu does have a 64 bit version. I accidentally downloaded it instead of the 32 bit a few months ago.
