What FTP Prgram do you use? Options

What ftp program do you use?

I really want Direct FTP because It has a built in file editor.

Its 35 bucks.

What programs can you edit files on?
Like what ftp programs let you right click a file and select edit and save it.

I tried on filezilla but when I open a stylesheet in notepad it opens with no spaces?!
I heard if you open in wordpad it fixes it but I dont like wordpad:(

I just use good ol' Windows Explorer... I type in my ftp domain and username, and I'm in. All I have to do is drag and drop files from my hard drive in order to upload what I want.

If I want to edit something, then I edit the original file on my hard drive and then replace it when I drag and drop into my browser window. IMO, it's the best way to go... simple, easy, and free.

I use Core FTP and notepad. It works great for me. It is extremly easy to use and learn. This is my first time with FTP and I love it.

I use transmit for the mac. I paid for it because it's just way better than cyberduck in my opinion, and I love that it lets you edit files directly from the webspace so when you save it, it automatically uploads the changes. You don't have to download a file, open it, make your changes, save it, and upload it again - you just open transmit, find the file you need to edit, right-click and choose edit, and it opens the file in your text editor. Then when you're done you literally just save the file and your changes are updated on your website. It's so much less clicking and it's a HUGE timesaver.

Oh, and as for editing, I use textmate (another mac application) - Michael (mipadi) actually introduced me to it, and yes, I paid for that as well.

Well, if you right-click instead of double click, and mouseover "Open With" You can then select the "Choose Default Program" option.
Then you could have it open up in whatever editor you so choose.

I had SmartFTP but then it expired on my and now I use CoreFTP.

I like SmartFTP more because it was easier to use and more organized, CoreFTP isn't bad but I hate updating because of it.

FireFTP is just like SmartFTP.

I'm not sure if you were saying, "I use Transmit for Mac instead of Cyberduck because Transmit has this feature and Cyberduck doesn't," or simply "I like this feature about Transmit;" but Cyberduck can edit files directly, too, although the menu command is a bit hidden and bound to a weird key. (Actually, all the commands in Cyberduck are bound to a weird key, because the author is Swiss and thus uses the first letter or so of the name of the Swiss German command, but I digress.)

Actually I have used smart ftp before and I do agree that it is pretty easy to use. However, I couldn't figure out how to edit files and save them. Rather, all I could do was download the file, edit it, then re-upload it. Of course it was back in 2004 or 2005-ish and I was n00bish. I really like the cyberduck interface. :]

I tend to mash my sentences up and go onto a different topic altogether before adding punctuation, lol. I'm not really familiar with Cyberduck's interface anymore, simply because I stopped using it not long after I first installed it. I started using Transmit because I was getting frustrated with Cyberduck (I can't remember why exactly, it was during a time when I was editing and uploading a TON of files and I just remember being frustrated). I remember being sad that Transmit only had a free trial version and once that demo was up I realized I couldn't go back to not using it, so I bought a licensed version. It's kinda like why I have an iPod instead of some other mp3 player. They technically serve the same purpose but I couldn't understand why someone would pay so much more money for a "special" kind until I had one myself.

This probably has something to do with what you said about some of the menu commands being hidden though, and speaks volumes about how little patience I have when it comes to familiarizing myself with a program. I need to save time, and if I feel comfortable with something right away then I'm willing to pay for it as opposed to something that will take time getting used to, haha.

Probably because Cyberduck is balls-slow. Cyberduck is written almost entirely in Java, and performance is not its strong suit.

I actually used Transmit for a pretty long time, but I prefer Cyberduck's simple interface to Transmit's two-paned interface; however, the killer feature in Cyberduck is its Growl support, which Transmit lacks.*

* I imagine Transmit might have Growl support in newer versions, but I have an old-ish version (2.6.2) and don't want to pay to upgrade again. Also, my version doesn't support TextMate as an external editor.

But I use Filezilla now. Doesn't work as well, but it's alright I guess.

BTW, what's this.. FireFTP being just like Smart? Can you ctrl+v your files in and will it transfer them like that?

Get Filezilla! Its is by far the best! And you can configure it easily and change files just by right clicking and editing them instead of dragging them to you desktop editing them and putting them back.

Trust me, use filezilla! and look at the settings and prefferences and learn it.

You should get it. I did and It is SO SIMPLE it's unbelievable. all you do is upload your files to your site from the right and edit them on the left.

I could also make a tutorial for that on my site and then you could check it out. Hey! that's a great idea! hahahaha! I do that all of the time! hahaha! :)

Are you sure you want to do that? Especially with Ie's new security holes?

I downloaded coffee cup html editor and set it so when I right click a file on the server and edit it, it opens in the html editor.

So I set it up perfect!
