So this morning when I took the public University buses to school, I sat in front of a man I'm guessing in his mid 40's. So he seem like the typical regular man you know. So then the next stop the bus makes, a whole bunch of people came on, and there was this white girl who sat next to him. The first thing when she sat down besides him, the man next to her, his eyes WIDEN. He kept staring at her the entire bus ride, more particular at her breast. I felt so sorry for the girl. I look at the girl's face, and she had the most uncomfortable look ever. Good thing, the man's stop was the next down, and he left. After he left, I said "Dude, did you see that man next to you? He kept staring at you" She goes like "I KNOW! I'm like why did I sit here?!" And we just laughed about it.

So I'm wondering, does this in any way constitute as sexual harassment in any way. Because wouldn't harassment follow the underline definition of making someone feel uncomfortable? I don't know. What do you guys think. I mean, in our work place, you should never make any of your coworkers feel uncomfortable, and if you do, it consitutes as harassment.

There are different levels of harassment, and I really think this is one of them. I'm with ^ though... poor thing wouldn't be able to do anything about it anyway (except for maybe get up and go someplace else).

My sister sat next to this normal-looking guy on the bus before, and he kept spreading his legs apart so that his knee would touch hers. She purposely rotated her body so that they wouldn't be touching, but he just kept on spreading them. =\

Haha, and this doesn't really relate but I thought it was funny: Once I was standing on the sidewalk outside of a shopping mall, waiting for my parents to pick me up. This totally drugged up dude walks by staring at me, and whispers "I love you". I just kinda looked away, hoping he'd just keep walking, but he just whispered "I love you" again. THEN he went away. LOL

yeah, I know it wouldn't be enough to bring legal actions. I'm not going that far. I just wanted to know what kind of act that would be classified under, because that's just creepy.

Anyways, have you guys had any similar situations like this?

Yeah, there's a type of philia that goes under this kind of thing. It's like they love to touch other people in like crowded places, especially on the bus. They pretend to go on crowded areas, just to be touched by others near them. I forgot the term. I'm now trying to google it. I learned it in my Human Sexuality class.

yeah it seems harassing.

although, aren't we only saying this because of his age/appearance? if he was our age does it still seem like harassment?

i mean if looking at a girl is harassment, well, i think wouldn't 99% of us be harassers?

^ You're right in a sense. I also don't think I'm saying this and my opinion is construed because of his age. If I guy our age did the same thing, I would still have the same feeling.

You're also right, that every straight guy checks out girls, but just the way this man was doing it was off right uncomfortable for the girl. I mean girls know they are being checked out by other men all the time, but when it gets to a point of uncomfortableness, then yeah. See in our Woman's Studies class I took last Spring, we were talking about what constitutes as harassment, and we discuss how much gray area there is in defining it.

yeah, i agree with you. i just wonder about that thing a lot, how women define harassment and how any real definition can be made when it seems like it's always case by case depending on their opinion of the guy doing it. that would be an interesting class, i'd think.

I think it's definitely somewhat sexual harassment. And I hate when people harass women. My girlfriend is always telling me how guys are whistling and winking at her. It really pisses me off that some men don't have some decency for women.

Now I'm not saying that I haven't caught myself looking at a girl. But there's a line there and this man definitely crossed it.

*gets down off of soap box*

She should've said something to the man...

It's considered sexual harassment if the person feels uncomfortable. It can be just looking at them or even a pat on the back.

My principle once acted out what would be constituted as sexual harassment, it was very awkward.

Yes, it does. Nothing can be done about it unless there are witnesses and the act is documented in some form. Most of the time nothing is done about it because its hard to get people to cooperate with you on your claim.

err well my professor smiles at me more than at other people in my class, and gave me his personal email to send my essay to because he didn't have time to look it over. Maybe I'm just over reacting, but it feels rather strange.

That poor girl! I wouldn't have had the guts to say anything either. I think girls are taught to be too nice, even if their safety (or I guess... dignity?) is at risk from creepers.

I don't want to be redundant, since everyone's kind of saying the same thing, so yea I'll talk about an experience.

So one time I was working in the library, shelving books on the first floor. This guy comes up to me and is asking me where he can find some books - check this, he asks me, in a Science & Enginering library, "do you know where I can find books on unicorns and blah blah blah"? ...... mellow.gif WTF?! Talk about lame.

Then I'm like "if you need to find any books, please use the computer infostation on the right."

Then he's like "oh no, I'm just kidding. Ahaha. Hey do you know where I can find books on blah blah blah enginnering blah blah blah?"

HOW THE HELL WOULD I KNOW?! There's thousands of books in the library! Only the actual supervisors and librarians would be able to pinpoint distinct areas where the books might be, but even so there's so many! And I was only working there for about a month anyway.

Then he goes and looks up on the computer, then comes back and goes down the row of shelves that I am putting books in, and asks me where I can find certain books again. I tell him that he's in the wrong place, that he should all the way down to the other end, since that's where they're located. Then he leaves and comes back a minute later and stares at me again, then goes to the shelves behind me and I swear I can feel his eyes on me. And then I'm putting books back on some shelves a couple rows down (opposite direction of where he needs to go) And there he is again a minute later! omg I felt so creeped out, because then he would start asking me questions that don't even pertain to the science & engineering library.

Creeper: "Oh yea, did you hear about the bomb threat on the freeway?"
Me: "Nope.
Creeper: "Yea, that's BS. blah blah blah"
Me: "That's great."

Ack then he just stands there and stares at me while I'm putting back books, asks me some other random questions, and he didn't even get the book he needed until at the end, when I was done. I swear this went on for like 30 minutes... =_="

WTF.

I was still 19 at the time but he looked like he was 25 years old or something. This is just a guess since he looked older than my friend who is 23-ish.

Uh, staring is even considered sexual harrassment?

She could have gotten up and moved. He wasnt forcing her to sit there and he wasnt touching her or making any noises or smelling her. So, no.

How funny, I've just finished being in an all-creeper week situation. It's strange. I suppose the best thing you can do is ignore it. If anything, when I tried to confront some people about it, it's just made it worse.
