We have to do that all the time in philosophy class, but I think usually the professors or teachers are just asking you to think about the theory. Especially if the person who wrote it is very famous or has a PhD, whatever, there will be other people of equal intellect countering his theory. But I agree, it's hard sometimes to counter an argument that makes sense to you.
