to me it just looks like they used two dark colours as a gradient.

It's actually called Opacity. And that feature is on your layers palette to the right of your screen. It should be in the top right corner of the palette.

It kind of looks like they typed the word out in white then set it to screen, or maybe overlay or soft light.

It's probably Soft Light or Overlay (not Screen, because Screening with 100% white just gives you...white).

Yea I think they use dark colors on a gradient and used the opacity setting.
