Photoshop Problems, Urgh cs3 Options

Hey;]
im using photoshop cs3 and when i use the text tool theres things at the top but second box i think its making it do this because im typing text and its not showing up ive made sure its not already the same color and made sure about size but i cannot see my text and when i type nothings happening on the second box which i think is doing it theres regular but its not changing please help on how to solve this ?

and another problem
i use polygonal lasso tool too cut cause i work best with that everytime im cutting round something it will stop like it does when you click twice with all these lines which is supppose to happen when your done im not clicking twice but i get them or im just going round a person and it will stop and join it up stupidly please?

This has happened to me before. Open up your Character window, and make sure it looks SOMETHING like this:

If there is any crazy text in any of the places, change it to what it should be.

Try restarting Photoshop. This sometimes happens to me, it's just the text is too small even at 72. Highlight it and keep increasing the size.
