Highlighting? No, I don't know how to change that. I don't know how to code anything to save my life lol. I would just wait until someone else can help you. Oh & no problem.

Just add a background color tag in your stylesheet.

If you want to have the background color (and the link) stretch all the way across the width of the menu, you'll have to use lists. You can read a tutorial on it here, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a good grasp of basic HTML and CSS.
