there isn't really a 'right' wallpaper size, considering most screens have different sizes, but the standard everyone usually makes is 1024x768. However, there are way more sizes than that, and people with bigger resolutions may not want to use that wallpaper because it's too small and looks funny when stretched, so usually there are multiple sizes for it.

As for the best style, again, there isn't a right one, since everybody has different tastes. You can make all different types of styles and find fans for each one, so yeah. I guess maybe a minimalistic wallpaper might be good for a lot so it's easier to see icons than messy, clogged up wallpapers, but check out some wallpapers on very popular sites to get a general feel of what to make.

who the hell still uses 800x600. seriously, just smash your monitors and get new ones already.
...unless you have a 7" netbook, in which case it would make sense...

anyway, some tips in making a wallpaper more widely usable:
- high quality images
- fluidity
- basic elements of good design and composition

Yeah I'd like to add...make it so that you can actually see your icons. That's my pet peeve in wallpapers.

If you don't feel like making one for all the different sizes, just makes sure the edges are a repeating pattern or solid color. That way it can be tiled on larger screens and still look good.
