So, I'm attempting to stop biting my nails for the second time. I'm, unfortunately, one of those people who can't stop through sheer will power alone, so I'm using some nasty ass nail polish called No Bite It (I guess, it has "Bite It" with one of those "no" rings around it, so I'm assuming that's what it's called.)

Have you ever broken yourself of a bad habit? Are you like me and need some added outside help?

Broke out the habit of one nighters. That was so 2007 lol. I've only done it about 3 times so far this year, which is pretty impressive. So I don't think that's even enough to say it's a habit.

I stopped biting my nails by moving onto biting the skin around my nails (:

^ Oh god, I do that too. I didn't use it, I picked it up a couple years ago. Hmmm... now that I think about it, I may have started after I tried to stop biting my nails the first time. I unfortunately kept biting my nails.

If I'm not successful this time, I'm seriously going to look into being hypnotized into stopping.

I wish I had the ability to break my bad habits.

Thus concludes the sharing of my habit story.

I crack my knuckles. It started out as something that I just found amusing, and then turned into a nervous habit. From there it became something I did so often that my fingers actually hurt when I "need" to pop them. Now I do it several times a day, and I've tried several times to stop with no luck. sad.gif

Replace that bad habit with a new better habit.
Or, reward yourself for not doing it.
For example, take something away from yourself that you really enjoy. Then, after a few days of not biting your nails you can have that thing back for a little bit. Keep repeating this.

Or, you could do the opposite and punish yourself every time you do bite your nails. Keep a rubber band around your wrist and snap yourself with it using a decent amount of force every time you bite your nails. Eventually your brain will realize every time you bite your nails you get hurt and it wont want to do it anymore.

It's better to give yourself incentives rather than punishment. Figure out why you bite your nails (out of anxiety, for example), and start from there. You can also try improvement behaviors like chewing gum; I heard from quite a few that using gum as a replacement is pretty effective. No Bite It polish should help, too. You can do it! thumbsup.gif

As for me, I struggle with perfectionism. Oftentimes, the measures are ridiculous and ultimately bothersome. Perhaps they explain my lack of sleep as well.

Everyone has their respective habits. Change is possible; motivation helps.

That's like me! I get really grossed/freaked out when people around me do it. But then I always catch myself cracking my neck. xD

This isn't so much a bad habit, but annoying to those around me... I used to randomly snap just because I could. xD

^ I crack my arm sockets, if that makes sense. You know, when you grab your hands above your head and move them towards your back? I hope I explained that right _unsure.gif

Gum didn't work for me, unfortunately, partly because I would forget to stock up on it. Gum is a lot tastier than No Bite It, but at least the latter works.

Ugh, I'll never be able to quit biting my nails.

I don't really do it nervously, though, I do it to trim... I absolutely HATE nailclippers for some reason, so I kind of default to biting.
