Alright. So im really thinking about getting one of the two.
I have seen mixed reviews, prices, and photos of such.
Though im still kind of iffy about it.

I really want it because next summer my family is planning to go to japan as my Senior graduation trip
(although it would be the summer before senior year)
And i would LOVE to have either camera to snap some shots on
not to mention i would love to snap pictures otherwise and such.

Though i dont know which is the best of the two.
Like i said ive seen mixed reviews of both

I would love opinions! Also if anyone has any i would love to see some of the photo comparisons that they both take.

Also where i can find cheaper-ish prices of such.

Anyways i would love your opinions!

Ha ha, the Nikon D80 is definitely better. The Nikon D80 is at least a whole 'nother level above the D40. You should be comparing the D40 with other entry level cameras from other competing manufacturers.

Which camera to buy depends on how serious you think you're gonna get with photography. Or how much money you have. I mean, unless you really got the extra cash to be using the Nikon D80 as a snapshot camera (which I think goes a little less than double the price of the D40), you should just stick with the D40, or another entry level DSLR like the Canon Rebel XT, or somethin'.

Kryo is gonna tell you not to get the D40, maybe if he comes around, you'll find out why. There are actually people on here with a D40 too, though, so you keep asking around.

I'm on a low budget, but I saved up for a D80 and it performs, no doubt.

Yeah i would want to save up for sure.
I have seen D40 pictures and i liked it but in a way it seems like i can take photos like that on my regular digital camera except for having the good quality on my dig. and i have seen pictures with the D80 and i loved them.
I would love to get serious with Photography
(im into photography and graphic designing and i would love to combine both)
Though my mom always gets angry when i look into cameras, its always like im looking at porn or something.

Im curious to also hear Kryo's opinion on the D40

Also how much does the D80 cost usually?

Ha ha, not surprised at your mom's reaction. Photography is definitely not a cheap hobby. If you're on a tight budget, you better have the passion to make up for lost cash.

You can practice the artistic concepts of photography on pretty much any camera. No lie though, these more expensive cameras just give you more control and can make it easier to let you convey whatever it is you want to express.

I got my Nikon D80 in a kit that included entry level 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses and some bag. I don't even use the two lenses or the bag though. Anyway, that went for about $1,300. I got it from Costco before they changed their return policy though, so I'm basically borrowing the camera for as long as I want. Too bad Costco changed their return policy already.

I heard (from Tori) that they definitely go for under $1,000 these days, though.

I would love to practice for now. Do you have any suggestions for the practicing?
and geez that price literally made me cringe XD

I know that im up for the potential loss of money.
I also have 9-10 potential months to save up money if we decide to go on our trip

Alright then. Anyway, Japan is gonna be a really, really nice place to shoot. I've always wanted to take a trip there and just shoot away. That place is just so dang photogenic.

Anyway, if you wanna work on the artistic side of things, get your creative juices flowing. First, you might want to look up some basic art principles and photography compositional guidelines. Hmm, you could always Google, but maybe try this too:

^ ha.

I would definitely choose the D80. If I had a choice, I'd get the D700. But we're talking big bucks there.

So, i was looking at prices at circuit city
Now im comparing the Nikon D80 to the Nikon D90
The nikon D90 costs less and is about $1299.99 but im not sure if thats just the body or not...though looking at this more it looks like its also with the lens
The nikon D80 started at $1769.98 though theres some special with it that adds the lens and then it evens out to $1469.98
these are also from circuit city

The Nikon D90 is newer and has better mega pixels, so i dont get why it costs more.
So i guess im just confused?

If the d90 was $999.95 then it's without the lens.

Thats what confuses me a lot. Its so hard to tell wether theses prices are with or without the lenses.

then theres a circuit city about 45 minutes away from me.

Yeah, I was going to say Costco has a pretty good deal.

The 70-300mm lens is like $600 by itself. Unless you get it on ebay/craigslist or something.
