So, im thinking about getting dreads but im still not sure about it.
One, i know everyone in my family would freak.
Two, I dont want to cut my hair real short afterwards.
most likely id be getting extensions but if you think about it its kinda a waste cause if i just grab a chunk of my hair and rub it between my hands i'd pretty much have the start of a dread.
my hairs really curly and thick and like, 2 minutes after im done brushing it it has knots in it again. also, if i get extensions it kinda defeats the purpose of my wanting to get dreads. i want dreads because im so tired of having such a hard time with my hair.

other than the poll, does anyone have any advice about a type of hairstyle that would work with majorly curly hair since im still not sure if ima get the dreads yet?

fyi, ive tried so many different hair straighteners and products its not even funny.
and it takes about 2 hours to straighten my hair which is time i do not have during the school year.

oh! one more thing.
theyd be in a ponytail or something and probably dyed several different colors.
i hate having my hair on my neck and i like colors. C:

I love dreads. They make anyone look sexy(unless they're just too ugly, then it can't be helped xD).
If it's your first time, you should play around a bit. Dreads are time consuming and they need constant taking care of(not to mention washing!). If you do decide to get them, go natural and get them done by someone who knows what they're doing.

In the meanwhile, go check these out:
Naturallycurly.com
Curly Hair Help

They have lots of hair styling ideas.

It REALLY depends on the person sporting dreads. I've seen them look great on people and I've seen them look terrible on people.

Not opposed though, at all.

If you think youd look right with them, i'd do it.
But i think there cool.
What kind are you going to do? not like fake or real, i mean like "fluffy" or "rubberband"? because if you have medium length hair "rubberband" would look cool, but if you have long length "fluffy" would look good. But they both look good with medium or long hair, they just look better with the ones i put them with imo.

Dreads are really cool if done correctly and taken care of properly.
But, it is also a pretty major decision because if you decide you don't want dreads anymore you can salvage some of your hair, but for the most part you'd have to cut it off.

But, I love them. Especially really pretty colorful ones.

Some people that don't take care of them end up looking gross and it makes you feel like you should plug your nose when you walk by them, lol. But for the most part I like them. I have seen some people that look terrible with them (I'd probably be one of these people).

I like it when guys get long dreds and tie it up with a mustache and bushy eyebrows. Kind of gives them the Japanese look. I think it only looks good on Asians though XD black hair ONLY

I went through a phase of wanting dreads, but decided against it, very wisely, I think.

I personally think they're pretty cool, but personally couldn't deal with them. For one thing I'd probably lose my job, which would be unfortunate.

If you want them, though, go for it.

Are you talking about dread locks? I think those are ew. sick.gif

But anyways, have you considered chemically straightening your hair? The only downside is that when you do it, your natural hair grows out at the roots so it might look bad once your hair grows out again. But some people have said that the straightening lasts for a year. Of course it'll probably cost $200+ to do it, if you want it done professionally.

As for hairstyles.. Eh not really, sorry. ;x

I definitely don't think that dreads are a good look on girls. They require A LOT of hard work and maintenance that a lot of people aren't used to doing. If I were you, I would talk to a West Indian person, because they would definitely tell you more about it than we could.

I don't have that kind of money. sad.gif
to be honest, i've never had my hair cut at a salon because i never have any money and my parents are too cheap to pay for me to get my hair cut.

Where do you get your hair cut, if not at a salon? Anyways, one of my friend's dorm mate cut my hair and it was pretty good for a guy who has only cut his own hair and his girlfriend's hair. Fortunately I have straight hair (with a slight wave at the end). Honestly I think you should save up money to go to a decent salon so that you can ask them what kind of hairstyles would work with your face and how to fix your hair up. shrug.gif

As for hair straightening -- prices depend on the chemicals they use on you, plus it takes time to do. My boyfriend's sister offered to do the straightening on my hair if I pay for the chemical, which costs about $100 (at least that's what she told me). Plus she says that depending on the hair, it could last at least a year. It lasted at least a year on my sister in law.

For dreads... doesn't that mean you wouldn't be able to wash your hair? sick.gif

^last time, my cousin's friend whos in beauty school cut it for me.

I'm not really sure about straightening my hair cause i kinda like it curly and its starting to look nicer since i learned some stuff from the links that berrypop(i think) posted. :D

and yea. i kinda decided not to get dreads after my mom told me she'd chop my hair off if i did.
and i know she will. >_<

If you actually took some time to understand what the f**k I was saying, then you would know that growing dreads means a lot to west indian people. It was really originated there, and it is something that they take pride in. They would be able to give the best insight on the process, meaning, how to maintain them etc.
