Removing Borders;, borders around image links. Options

Okay I'm doing a layout for a friend and using little icons for Home Message and Comment. The problem I am having is that the icons themselves are black, with no borders. But once I put them into the layout, because they are basically links, they show up with a white border. Is there anyway to remove the border?

Would I have to mess with the link properties to get rid of the border? I hope I explained this correctly. Thanks in advance to those who help.
