Theres the rule where instead of "a", you have to put "an" in front of any word that starts with a vowel...but why is it that when you say an username, it sounds so funny?

It's the same with unicorn. I think it's a 'u' thing. I had a note like this on Faceebook once.

That's odd. Us are very bipolar. It seems to work for the word, "umbrella".

That's odd. Us are very bipolar. It seems to work for the word, "umbrella". ![]() That's because when you pronounce umbrella, it's like "uhm-brel-la", where it sounds like uuuhhh. Just as highwayto4355 mentioned before, when you say "username", it sounds like "yoo-ser-name". That's like saying "I have a yo-yo" versus "I have an yo-yo" in regards to how the pronunciation actually sounds. So we're conditioned to say "an" for words that begin with vowels in the beginning and sound like vowels as well. |

I think "an" only comes before a vowel sound.
For example, you don't say "a hour", you say "an hour". |

What Christina said, basically. The rule for using "an" before a word beginning with a vowel doesn't always apply.
