Theres the rule where instead of "a", you have to put "an" in front of any word that starts with a vowel...but why is it that when you say an username, it sounds so funny?

It's the same with unicorn. I think it's a 'u' thing. I had a note like this on Faceebook once.

That's odd. Us are very bipolar. It seems to work for the word, "umbrella". blink.gif

That's because when you pronounce umbrella, it's like "uhm-brel-la", where it sounds like uuuhhh.

Just as highwayto4355 mentioned before, when you say "username", it sounds like "yoo-ser-name". That's like saying "I have a yo-yo" versus "I have an yo-yo" in regards to how the pronunciation actually sounds. So we're conditioned to say "an" for words that begin with vowels in the beginning and sound like vowels as well.

I think "an" only comes before a vowel sound.
For example, you don't say "a hour", you say "an hour".

What Christina said, basically. The rule for using "an" before a word beginning with a vowel doesn't always apply.
