I think CB should have a feature in which a user can (optionally) receive an email notification when someone else replies to/quotes their post in a thread.

Actually, it'd be cool if posts also had a "Reply" button so you could reply to someone's post but not necessarily quote it, and then they would receive an email about it, too.

It was, basically, that you had to be subscribed to a topic in order to receive a notification when a person replied to it. And even then, you got an e-mail ANYTIME someone replied, not just when they quoted you.

I think the way IPB works, when you quote someone it only generates the BB code so it appears as a quote - the post doesn't necessarily get marked as a reply. I'm curious to know whether this is something that can be implemented easily or not, but I will say that I'd love to see this feature if at all possible.

you can still subscribe to a thread; i'm not sure why we're talking about it as if it's past tense.

No, no, that's not what I'm talking about; I'm suggesting there be a feature in which you get an email automatically if a person quotes your post.

I know, i was just addressing the others. But yes, that would be a neat function to have but i dont think its completely viable because not all people quote others using the quote button on that post. some people just copy and paste and then use the quote bbcode.

I think this would be a cool feature. I mean, I don't think I'm gonna subscribe to EVERY topic that I reply in. Thats just crazy. wacko.gif It'd be cool to get an alert to see when people quote us.

I like the second idea better, so someone would still know I was replying to their post but I didn't have to quote it. Maybe have it when you do a quick reply or a regular reply you can check the boxes of the peoples post that your replying to so they can get notified that they were replied to shrug.gif

^oh that would be good too. Maybe a little box where you can just write down their usernames that you want to be notified, that would be easier.

If the facebook thing is like that, please ignore me. Never seen it xD

Oh, yeah, you can track topics, that part was skipping my brain. When you guys said subscribe to a topic I was left all confused, haha. I think that would be a cool feature. The only thing is that I don't think a lot of people want a TON of messages and new members (well, forum users for the most part) might get a little confused about the feature.

i don't think people want the tons of messages in their inbox, lol. plus having to go through all of them must be a hastle. and i like insurmountable's idea about the quick reply.
i would actually like that feature. well, a little. lol. i'm not too sure if i want to receive a lot of emails/pm's. i get annoyed sometimes when i get like 25+ emails from facebook in one day because my friends love to spam my facebook photos.

Well, then, turn it off. As I noted in the proposal, the feature would be optional.

shrug.gif I like the idea of getting notified about a post if someone wants me to read it or if it was a reply to me. Its not like I remember ever topic I ever post in, and since I don't go on aim anymore xD anyone that wants me to read a post they can just send me a quick notification.

Right, as with every feature, a few people who don't think it's necessary is not a reason in itself not to implement something that others would find beneficial.

As it stands, I pretty much go through my posts on a regular basis to see if anyone's responded, and it would be much nicer to receive a notification instead. I'm sure that for the person who actually quotes me, it would be nice to know that their response will be seen, as well.
