Hmph. Kk, soo today the weirdest but very irritating thing happened.

I was at my uni (which is attached to a mall) so I was with Larry and another friend (both are Asian and I'm half) and we're walking through the food court. Some little old lady was walking next to us and muttering to herself, and we just tried to ignore it but then we heard what she was saying.
"*mumble mumble* scram...damn Asians...*mumble*" so we turned and said, "Excuse me?" And she goes off on us!
"Damn asians, coming here from bloody China ... *mumble* stay where you came from, coming to our damn country ... *mumble*..Philippines too! *mumble*"
It goes on. Larry responds, "Um, you're being really rude ma'am."
And she just keeps going off so Larry told her to shut her mouth and eff off, haha but she had walked off.

Seriously, I refuse to respect someone if they don't respect me, elderly or not. WTF.

Just my story of the day. Soo, yeah. Have you ever had any thing like that happen to you? blink.gif

Oh man, Steph.. That's seriously awful. I can't believe people act like that. =\

I've never had anything like that happen to me in public, no, but I can't believe other people have to go through stuff like this.

It was so stupid though, because she's in an area thats majority asian/south east asian and whatnot. mellow.gif Seriously. Even if she didn't like it, you think she'd get used to the fact she's surrounded by immigrants. It's the west coast of Canada, I mean really.

LOL that's hilarious. Why, of all places in North America, does she live here then? Honestly, you'd think she'd be used to it by now. I don't know about you, but like 80% of my school is some sort of Asian.

I've never encountered someone like that though, I guess there really are that many Asians around my area. Most of the people I meet are really sweet and, well, normal.

Wow, that's pretty crazy... I've never met anyone that (openly) racist before! The worst I've ever heard was the use of "FOB".. but come on, everyone says that.

Hmm, university attached to a mall.. SFU Surrey campus?

a bunch of my friends and i were at 7-11 and this old greasy hair b, look-like a homeless grandma or one of those ladies that live with 100 cats muttered some random crap about asians. then she procceeded to tell the cashier that he should watch out for us, we might steal. the cashier looked at her with disbelief while shaking his head.

lols. i wonder who shoved that tampon up her ass and left it there to rot. she can be ignorant all she wants, i'm not going to take part in that.

Yep. Gigi and I actually go to the same school. =]

Oh, I just remembered: There used to be this social studies teacher at my school who was known for her racist comments. I remember I had her for about a week during my first year of high school, and she brought in a (really really obviously crappy) binder that was made in China. She brought it in to demonstrate how useless things from China are, and did so by pretty much stomping and jumping on it. People used to make some pretty pointless online petitions to get her fired, but they never worked. She recently 'retired' though, so I guess the message got to her somehow.

That's why I'm kind of scared of old people... Since they grew up in a really racist time, they could have been very racist in their younger years, and have just suppressed it because it's frowned upon now. It's really hard to grow out of your own upbringing like that.

Yes, I've encountered people of similar sentiments. And this is actually true, from a couple of years ago:

I was stopped inside a convenience store because the owner thought I had stolen a candy bar. All I came in for was a water bottle. He flattered himself if he thought I would put his processed garbage into my body. So, I bring that up to pay and he goes, "Is that all for you?"
"Yes."
He leans closer. "Are you sure?"
"Yes."
He leans over more and wiggles his eyebrows. "Is that all you'll be buying?"
"Yes."
Exasperated, he finally says, "You took the candy bar. I saw you."
And here I thought he was trying to throw me a corny sales pitch for his stale hot dogs. "Oh, okay. You're right."
"Aha! All you Arabians do is thieve off me [I'm Persian, not Arabian]. So you admit it?"
"That's right. I took the candy bar. King-sized Snickers. That's half of your revenue, old man. And I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for you meddling Americans!" He actually looked to be Indian.
He blinks, and demands, "Empty your pockets."
I take out the only object in them, a folded piece of paper that I open up for him on his counter. It's a drawing of a bloody bag of eyeballs tied to floating balloons. I was bored in band practice that day.
He just stares, so I put it back in my pocket and state, "This was a test of your emergency response system. My work here is done." And I left.

What a weak stereotype. Middle Easterners are terrorists, okay. That's on a grand scale. I admit, I am pretty terrifying. I take it as a compliment. But they steal candy bars? Low. Just low.

^lol, wtf is up with that guy..

The exact same thing happened to my friend when she was waiting at the bus stop. This elderly lady was mumbling and then she started screaming at them. She was saying that white people were going to kill them and they should have stayed in their own country..

Newsflash: this country doesn't belong to any ethnicity.

How old was the lady that was "talking" to you guys? For some reason I picture her being one of those 105 year old ladies on a walker or something laugh.gif

Sheesh, thats odd. I don't know how I would take that shrug.gif Personally I don't mind people that come to this country and really try and make a effort to learn the language and such. But those people out there that move here and make us learn their language so they can make a living here annoy the hell out of me >_>

If that was to me, then yes, that was obviously the point of it: to dismiss the legitimacy of such accusations by making a caricature of the ordeal. For instance, the "meddling Americans" line served to outline the disregard I had for his suspicions by creating a hyperbole of the man's paranoia. If I had gone along with it and defended myself in a serious, staid manner, I'd be abiding by his premise of cause for concern, whatever reason being.

The ultimate takeaway principle was deriving dignity from that ridiculousness.

If that wasn't directed to me, then the above is further response to Geek.

That kind of reminds me of the time my friend and I took the T from Quincy to Boston and the whole time there was this really old lady yelling at the top of her lungs in creole about how f**ked up white people are. She dropped her bag and my friend tried to help her when it looked like it was really difficult for her to bend down to pick it up, and she totally bitched him out. I know some french so I could pick up bits and pieces of what she was saying, but even then a lot of it didn't make any sense. I think old age just got the best of her.

wow. thats reminds me of this time when i was working at jcpenney. and i was a cashier at the moment. and these old ladies were walking around and they seemed so lost, so i asked if they need any help and they just went off on me. "i don't need your help, blah blah blah, mind your business blah blah blah"

so i said with a face [of course], "i'm sorry, i was only trying to help." and they were soo bitter and like, "god, she's so nosey and stubborn blah blah" and the other lady goes, "its because she's chinese."
i don't think i've ever felt so outraged in my life. and then the other lady adds, "yeah, the chinese are always trying to take control of everything, blah blah, they think they know everything.." and then the other lady goes, "i don't want your help!" screaming, like they're crazy. and i just have my 'what-the-fxk' face on. so i just said, "well, i'm sorry that i'm not bitter and ignorant like you three to offer help." and i just walked off. and i can hear them yelling, complaining, and feeling 'appalled' in the background.

i refuse to treat ANYONE with respect if they don't treat me with respect. ANYONE at all. you could be a police officer or even the president of the united states, i could care less. and this was the first time anything like that has ever happened to me, i've heard racial comments behind my back about asians, but never directly at me. people don't understand that asians worked their asses off to survive here and we're just trying to make a living. plus, its hard enough without all these racists putting us down.

i hate how people are so prejudiced. especially when you're just trying to offer help. i was so pissed off that day. even my manager thought something was wrong because i'm a very chipper person and i normally never frown in public. so its like what the hell. whats wrong with elders these days?

I think we allow elderly people to shit on us minority's.

"Oh its ok for me to call her colored or a Negro because back in my day it was ok to say that"

This same woman is a rabid blogger and loves to go on craigslist at the age of 70 and knows most of todays technology but she can call people colored.

It bugs me when people just categorize all of mainland China as a shithole. I mean, there are some parts of China that are like WTF??!! and get me angry.

I was born and raised in Canada, but the rest of my family is from Guangzhou, and I think that place is a lot like Hong Kong. People don't see it though, because when they hear "China" (regardless of what part) they think of all the bad stuff. =\
