Actor Patrick Swayze is diagnosed with cancer: report

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — American actor Patrick Swayze, best known for his roles in the movies "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost," has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, People magazine reported on Wednesday.

"Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far," Swayze's doctor, George Fisher, was quoted as saying.

"All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic."

George appeared to be responding to rumors that began circulating on the Internet early Wednesday, alleging that the 55-year-old actor was in serious condition and had just weeks to live.

Swayze's representative said the actor, who was voted Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine in 1991, was "continuing his normal schedule during this time, which includes working on upcoming projects."

The popular leading hunk appeared in a slew of movies in the 1980s and 1990s, including "Youngblood," "Red Dawn," "Road House" and "Point Break."

Tabloids including the National Enquirer and New York Post first reported Swayze's diagnosis, with both describing it as more serious than the actor's representatives let on.

"Pancreatic cancer spreads rapidly and is seldom detected in its early stages, which is a major reason why it's a leading cause of cancer death," the US-based Mayo Clinic says on its web site, calling it "one of the most serious of cancers."

aw yeah, I saw this earlier today, it really sucks. I haven't seen much of his stuff but he looks good for his age. I hope what the doctors say are true and everything turns out well soon.

True. It is usually detected way late and has a tiny life expectancy.

So we shouldn't feel any sympathy or compassion for someone who has cancer because there are others in the world with ill fated situations?

Uh... pretty much... because his value is no better than any other bum chillin in NYC. He's just another human being, like the rest of us, we all die. =\

Plus I hate the media on how they have to exploit people's personal lives. And I hate the fans of media who sit there and act like they give a shit about another human being that they don't even know on a personal level.

Sure it sucks that he may die because of cancer, but no way effin way am I gonna sit here and pretend to sympathize only for what? 5 minutes? Then go on with my day? pffft

Tamacracker, take a pill of much chill. Not necessarily the place for relating everything to the Third World and the futility of life. To the Debate forums for that!

I heard in the UK media that there is some scepticism over big P's condition. I'll try to find the link.

Right... cuz if you feel for that stranger... then you should feel for others around the world who are in 100 times worst conditions than Patrick. But you won't... cuz in a sense they have nothin to do with your selfish life. Only reason why you care for Patrick is cuz he made movies you liked. If he was just some guy in the middle of planet earth, you wouldn't give two shits.

But I am chill... I'm just wondering why you people act like you care for someone who doesn't give a shit about you in the first place?... I understand if you guys knew the man on a personal level but non of you do. He only entertained you and now all of a sudden he's worthy of your feelings? o.O?

And you would know any of this, and about me...how? I would love for you to tell me where you took your mindreading 101 classes, because I apparently failed mine.

Why not feel for him?

Hells, if David Bowie were to be in this position I'd probably cry for a month.

These people impact our lives.

It's not even so much that. It's a knee jerk empathy reaction, regardless of personally knowing someone or not.
