I read the plot, and it doesn't sound exciting at all. A monster attacking a city? Come on.

I liked it kind of.
It was kind of funny at parts.
and it's like the taping of the blair witch.
some parts were just so unreal but hey what movie isn't like that.

i've seen some reviews say it's a reflection of 9/11.

Also i liked the secrecy of the movie, they don't explain somethings but if you look online, theres like so much crap that follows the movie.

Cloverfield was much better than I ever expected. The effects are amazing, the acting is on-point (although never dark or desperate enough), and the action is captivating. The detractors, I suspect, merely have a deficient imagination or patience. I mean, it's no Blair Witch Project (succulent succulent mastery), but it's still an immensely entertaining theater experience filled to the monster-loving-brim with perfect subtleties hiding in utter terror and chaos. Best movie I've seen this year, har har.

A guy named Rob is going to japan for a new job and his friends and brother set up a surprise party. A videocamera is being held by his bff Hud to get testimonials from people as a going away present. An earthquake shake suddenly happens and news reports that some kind of monster (from the waters) is now invading the city.
The movie is basically about Hud and how he records his group of people deal with this chaos and flashbacks from previously recorded events dealing with Rob and a girl.

^The directors did that purposely.
They leaked only a few scenes from the movie as time went on.
Part of their master plan.

The way it was filmed was the only vehicle at which it could move closer towards a raw and realistic experience - an experience at all, for that matter. Given the entirely unbelievable premise of the film - a monster attack - putting us into the hands of the characters, both metaphorically and literally, allows us to more easily devote ourselves to the action on the screen. It's an impressive glimpse into a moment in time and an atmosphere and tone that could never be reached with conventional photography. Complaining about the camera is akin to complaining that a book you like doesn't have an omniscient narrative - you're missing the point. This is how we know the characters, how we see the tragedy through their eyes. f**k practicality when you have visceral awe.

As goes the ending, I could do with or without it - it isn't spectacular, but it is appropriate.

Oh my god, I thought this movie was horrible. I saw it with three of my best friends and they all loved it, but i thought it was just TERRIBLE. The camera was so shaky (even though it was on purpose) and it just gave me a headache after awhile. The ending was SO lame, so bad. And all the attacks were just plain hysterical. I was cracking up the entire time because it was that bad. Maybe that's just me though.

^ Yuck. Some girl sort of tripped once we're getting down the stairs. I knew the screen will be shaky, so I didn't eat anything 3 hours before the movie started.

AHH, I didn't see anything fell into the ocean. Hmm, I probably missed it because I was trying to look around to see any weird things and I guess I didn't catch it.

The movie wasn't that bad, the shakyness was tiring but still, it's not bad. My heart kept pumping a lot because of the rumbling in the theatres due to the sound and such.

However, I did get a little woozy after the movie. =X I still am, a little right now.

Overall it was not bad. I kind of like this movie more than First Sunday (I watched First Sunday first, it was okay............ Didn't like it that much)

You know, I've been really curious as to what you'd think of this since Cloverfield has been compared to Blair Witch.

I don't think this film has been overhyped at all though. I've only heard of this in passing and through listening to Lost related podcasts (since JJ Abrams is the brains behind both).

I've read that the acting is to par with typical cheesy horror film actors, which I love because this isn't about Oscar moments. It's about beautiful people making complete asses of themselves while being terrorized. It's comical and entertaining (and I've read also, visually appealing). The bad acting is a component of the film (from what I've gathered).

Anyway, that's all based on things I've heard and read. I'll respond more when I get a chance to see it.

My boyfriend said it was the worst movie ever. He wasn't too clear as to why he thinks so..just that he was really confused. My take on it is that they don't really explain a whole lot..? Not sure, but I still want to see it for myself.

Are they going to make a sequel?

Agreed 100%! Everyone in the theater (a bunch of kids on a Friday night) booed pretty much through the whole movie, but I'm seriously just under the impression that they were all too dumb to get it. If you want your typical formula for a movie with people who overact, and where the main characters miraculously survive through the end and you leave the movie with a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart, this isn't the movie for you. They follow their idea all the way through the movie and never once do they stray from the "this movie is filmed with a handheld camera and what you are watching is the tape, unedited, pulled straight from the camera". Don't expect it to end answering all your questions. Doing that would mean compromising the basic idea and I would have left feeling very disappointed in the movie.

No, it wasn't executed as well as Blair Witch, but it did leave a lot to the imagination which is at times much more terrifying than actually watching someone die and knowing the whole time that what you're seeing is special effects and way too much fake blood. Speaking of special effects, I seriously love how you aren't subjected to a million different amazing shots of this monster in which you can make out each individual wrinkle and see it blink (King Kong oh dear god). That's NOT realistic. What they did with this was perfect, not once did I think "Wow that's good for just being special effects" until AFTER the movie.

I think one thing that helped make the movie was the fact that all the actors were nameless and faceless. We don't have dramatic scenes where an actor gives a heartmelting speech right before the high point in the movie.

Anyway, I didn't read a single review, or anything, for that matter, regarding the film before I went to see it, so I just went in based on what I saw in the trailers. I thought it was going to be pretty bad, but I was pretty happy. I figure, like Nate, that any of the bad reviews for this movie exist only because the author didn't try to understand why the people behind the film made the decisions they did.

I've heard rumors of a sequel being made from a different camera, same basic principle. As far as I know, these are just speculations, though, and I guess we'll just see what happens.

I thought it was okay, not one of my top movies.

The biggest beef I have with Cloverfield is just that, in MY OPINION, the whole idea of the movie was stupid. I think it is like War of the Worlds meets Godzilla. I mean, when you think about it, if Rob, Hud, Lily, and Marlena didn't go back for Beth, then instead of 4 of them dying, only one of them would have died. (Assuming they would have gotten out of the city alive when Rob said, in the alley, that the other three should join the troops escorting people out). And the ending was just... cheesey. They say I love you then die. Typical. And what was with the guy from the Army pretty much just being like, "Okay, sure, go back into the city, save your friend, and die, what do I care?" Not practical, even for a movie. And I'm sorry, but the little creatures that fell off the monster remind me of the little head suckers from Half Life, only, you know, minus the head sucking part.

But... whatever. A lot of people liked it, so I guess it's a love it/hate it kind of movie. I just happened to hate it.

^ Well, the loving part at the end was basically the main plot, the reason to go back to mid town. He didn't want to say "Good Luck tonight Travis" as the last phrase before Beth dies and Rob never mentioned that he loved Beth. o.O

The acting's actually pretty darned good for a bunch of unknowns. One of the guys (Hud) was in Second City and performed at a show I saw. I know who he is! I've seen him in person! :D Good for him, he just made a buttload of money.

My boyfriend saw it the same night with his friends and I told him that if I was in Rob's situation, I wouldn't go back for him, haha. My life is a little bit more important. But then I felt bad cause he said that if I texted him like, "Help me, I can't move, I'm dying," that he would go back for me and I was like, "Oh..."

i loved the movie, i just came home from watching it and i thought it was great.

i dont like how beth survived through the end though, she should of bled out or something.... at least marlene survived.

i loved it, it was very refreshing from all the crappy movies that have been coming out.

I did not see anything from the coney island scene though, i wish i looked much more. if anybody has a clip please share. the one i have was taken from a cell phone and way too blurry to even see the faces.

btw Pandamonium, Maralene was the one that blew up from the bite o_o;;

^Agreed.
I would love to see a second movie.
Especially if they're revealing more about the monster.

I asked my boyfriend the same question about if that had ever happen would he come rescue me and he said, "of course! we don't live as far apart as they do!" and he gave me like a "are you kidding me? thats a stupid question, you know the answer" look. It was adorable.

btw Pandamonium, Maralene was the one that blew up from the bite o_o;;
Lily was the one that most likely survived.

ohh ooops yea i meant lily, haha

it was a good movie.
some people dont like it because of the way it was shot. but thats the best part of it...
everyone is used to the third person point of view when watching a movie, this movie kinda made you feel first person.. like you were right there, which was my favorite part... besides Hud's trash talking on the helicopter before it was taken down (lol.. i laughed so hard on that part)

but the disclaimer at the beginning does warn you if you have motion sickness it might not be a good idea to watch it.

Saw it.
Loved it.
it did make me kinda sick though but I rly liked how they kept it real.
Like okay i kno the monsters arent real but I liked how they kept it in documentary form because if something devastating like that were to happen you wouldn't have effing movie cameras around.
So yeah it was good.
I recommend.

I really think that Lily would have died in the end... Since I believe that everyone dies. No stopping those creatures. I wish I had seen that thing falling from the sky in the ending. UGH!
OMG that movie was so good but depressing.
I made me sick and I wanted to throw up. I heard that a bunch of people had thrown up.
I thought it was becuase of the blood but there was hardly any blood.

This movie was crazy, there were some exciting parts but overall, I thought I was watching the Blair Witch Project all over again. Especially the part where they were under that bridge and they turn the camera onto themselves. Beth practically said the same lines, "I.. am soo.. scared right now.." The ending seemed kind of short-comed, it seemed way to early, but that's just me. Also, I didn't catch the part where they were in the ferris wheel and something dropped into the water. Are you guys serious? I really didn't notice that. blink.gif I think I might have to rewatch it just to see that scene.

I waited for Cloverfield since I saw the first commercial back in the end of 2006 I think. Finally saw it and that whole wait was in vain. The movie was great up to the point of the end.

Like the Sopranos, it was just like... the end. Out of nowhere. That pissed everyone off.

I rewound that part three times when I watched it, and I STILL can't see it.

I really liked this movie. Watching it again no, in fact.

I really want to be in a disaster movie, by the way.

so sorry to bring this back, but i just rented and watched the movie. i have to say that even though i was kind of entertained throughout the movie, i think i hyped up the monster a little too much :/ also, i thought the dialogue got a tad too cheesy at some parts, but overall it was pretty decent.

after reading through this thread, i want to rewind and watch the ferris wheel scene again!

btw, i didn't get sick, but i was watching it with my brother and he had to stop watching because he felt sick to his stomach :/

I'm going to agree with James. The movie was good, but I don't think i'd re-watch it, haha.

There were times when I got sick (maybe it was from all of the shakiness from the camera -- but I loved the effect that it brought), and queasy from the spider-like things that fell from the monster. Ugh, but the worst scene for me had to be when they were underground in the subway, and turned the camera around and saw the spider-like creatures RIGHT BEHIND THEM... And ugh.

"We got a bite! We got a bite!" *Boom, she explodes*

Is all I could think of for a few weeks after I first watched the movie.

Overall, I really liked it. I had watched it with my boyfriend, and he was squealing like a little girl at some scenes -- which was BEYOND hilarious. I'd recommend it to other people, but as for watching it again... that would be a definite no. :P

edit- Juggalo, can you confirm there's gonna be a #2? That'd be quite interesting, actually.
