I found this really interesting.
In my Sociology class we watched the mini series of The Human Face with John Cleese as the host and Elizabeth Hurley who assists. In one of the series it is mentioned that what makes people physically attractive is the symmetry in the face (This is a reason why athletes are attractive - their symmetry helps them run faster, and since their faces are symmetric, they are attractive as well). Anyway, it goes on about the Golden Theory and explains about how everything that is considered perfect is a ratio of 1 to 1.618. And this one guy made up a mask devised of all these ratios of 1 to 1.618. Anyway, long story short, it explains that the closer your face is to this "face mask" the more attractive you are. Tom Cruise's face fits the mask perfectly, same with Kate Moss. This mask is also used by plastic surgeons to determine what they need to do to make someone more "beautiful." So, instead of everyone asking if they are attractive, they can just Photoshop this mask onto their face and find out for themselves!

Here is the mask:

How close is your face?

My exact thought.

Actually, I find it rather shallow for beauty to be determined by certain features; are we not each beautiful in our own unique way?

Tom Cruise is ugly.

I don't think a mask will really determine whether or not someone is beautiful. Maybe, typically, that is what is considered "attractive". But not everyone is attracted to the same type of people.
For example, I don't think Tom cruise is attractive at all.

With that said, I think the mask looks a bit odd. And I really doubt I'm anywhere near that. laugh.gif Oh well, call me ugly, idc.

edit: *high fives Olivia* EXACTLY!

That's what I thought before I saw the movie -- that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and such. But then when they started talking about the mask and comparing it to faces it was pretty cool. Obviously all the celebrities they showed fit the mask, and they compared the theory to this model and everything on her face was to the ratio of 1 to 1.618. I don't know, I just think the concept is really bizarre. I suppose it is supposed to fit to what society views as beautiful?

What is beauty? What is perfect?

If Adriana Lima and I went out for a few drinks, and she turned out to be a self-righteous bitch with all kinds of personal issues, she would no longer be beautiful.

I don't particularly find Christina Ricci to be remotely attractive, but if I got to know her, and I was intrigued by her intellect and personality, she just might be the most beautiful woman on the planet.

To each their own.

I've heard of this, and I've always been skeptical of it. However, I do believe that there are some faces that are more pleasing to the eye than others, simply by the theory of evolution. Traditionally good-looking male features include strong, wider jaw, heavier brows, while female features have plump lips, big eyes and a smaller, more delicate jaw with a narrower forehead. There must be a reason that these are the traditional gender features - they must be a sign of fertility that the opposite sex can be more attracted to, thus having a bigger chance of having healthy children, thus becoming more fit, etc...

Has anybody seen this thing on TV where they have a "database" of thousands of male and female faces, add them all together and "average" them out to create the average human face? They find that the people who most closely fit the "average" face are the most attractive. How ironic, considering how we've always thought of average-looking people as, well, not so great looking, but now you can take that as a compliment.

I think you can try it out here:

i think beauty is completely subjective. what is attractive to one person may look ugly to someone else.

but i think the mask idea is interesting.

That's really interesting. Something like this surfaced in Asia a few months ago, but my favorite Asian celebrities didn't look anything like the "ideal" beauty presented by scientists there.

Tom Cruise is okay, but Kate Moss is not that attractive to me.

I completely agree with that.

And yes, Tom Cruise = sick.gif
I think it's a bit.. odd.. for lack of a better word, to be determining how attractive someone is by comparing them to a whole lotta lines resembling a 'perfect' facial structure..
