Right so in Texas, early 2006 (I think, might have been 05) they enacted this point system for traffic violations etc. A speeding ticket is 2 points. Running a red light/stop sigh is 1 point. DWI is 4 (maybe 6) points. Reckless driving is 4 points. Those #s may be wrong but they're just off the top of my head.
Anyways, at the end of the year if you have 6 points or more they charge you 150$ (or more) per year for the next 3 years. I don't remember ever hearing about this in the news, the newspaper, the mail, or anywhere for that matter. I got a letter in the mail after I had attained 4 speeding tickets (one dismissed though, so 3 which = 6 points) that this was a rule they have. Right so now, on top of me paying 800$+ because of speeding tickets, they've decided that's not enough to take from me for hurting no one and breaking nothing aside from a traffic rule. Now I have to toss on an additional 450$. Whatever, I can deal with that. OH WAIT THERE'S MORE! They decided to tax the fine they gave me, and since I chose to pay online, they decided to tax it even further! Oh how I love the government! |

Now I'm just waiting for them to say that they didn't receive payment. I have the receipt you f**kers! My first time doing defensive driving, I got everything turned in, papers and driving record, and at the end of the year they told me that I never did it. WHAT THE f**k IT'S ON MY DRIVING RECORD! No matter, I got another ticket and I did defensive driving for that. I had to wait 3 hours in a courtroom full of people who drive without insurance or try to avoid paying their tickets to explain to the judge what happened, and have him let me use that defensive driving (sine it hadn't been a year since my last one and they marked it on my driving record).

Holy shit! I've lived in Texas for several years (currently in Arkansas, but I drive to Texas pretty frequently) and I've never heard of this! That's an insane amount of money for, as you said, something that hasn't harmed anyone. I'm amazed.

Good grief, are they hard up on cash or WHAT? And here I thought Nashville was bad for “filling the quota.”
What really irritates me is that you did something so minor and there are probably people being completely reckless not getting near those amounts in fines. I love how they reward honesty. |

my dad almost got his license suspended because of his points, but managed to bs his way out of the last point with some sort of explanation for his redlight-running session.

I seemed to rack up the traffic citations in Northside San Antonio. Where in Texas are you from? |

I'm from the northeastern part. :) |

my (old) car insurance company uses points to raise insurance. after three points, you're basically a goner though.
