Small dog, is there any? Options

I couldn't exactly find a sub forum for this, seeing as there isn't a "Animals" section, so I'll post it here

I'm after a small dog, most likely from an animal shelter, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any breeds that possibly:
- Don't shed too much fur
- Won't be barking every second of the day
- Is preferably more of an inside dog rather than one who needs to spend all their time outdoors.

I ask because I live in an average size unit, with not an extremely large backyard. Large enough for a small dog, but not one with a fetish to run all day every day.

Hmm, have you tried searching Google for "lap dogs?" Pugs are a good example of such. They're reportedly affectionate, don't shed too much (I don't think, they're short-haired), and I'm not sure about their barking habits. American Bulldogs are good and lively, too.

if youre willing to splurge a little on a pet here is the perfect one...
my friend just got an african basenji. they do not bark... though they do make quite a bit of noise. they have short hair which doesnt shed, have quite a history... and lets face it, are soooo cute.

how about a boston terrier? they're really short-haired, small, cute, and the majority of them are naturally obedient and know the right time to get their energy out. :]
or a scottish terrior-i'm not sure how they act or if they shed or anything but they're hella cute. =D

italian greyhounds

though they are really expensive to take care of, but they're so cute and tiny and they don't bark and they have short short hair that doesn't shed and all they want is a little TLC and a nice lap to cuddle up on.

Pugs are the only things that come to mind when I think of small dogs. The Basenji looks damned cute, though. I like the bigger dogs, still.

The basenji looks pretty cute to. I'd consider a pug, but I'm not really a fan of the googly alien eyes

he's supposed to stay small, but i guess it depends on what u consider small. they said he was supposed to be like 15 pounds or less when he was fully grown.

actually, there are three subgenres (haha idk what to call it) in the greyhound family:

greyhound: big
whippet: medium
italian greyhound: small

greyhounds and whippets are the traditional racing dogs. Italian greyhounds are just...small and cute.

"weiner dogs" are very loving! and very very i mean extremely
protective.

they also love being around the owner.

Well of my small dog knowledge I know that poodles and mini poodles are known not to shed their fur. I wouldn't recommend chihuahuas or yorkies, for they're known to bark a whole lot. dacshaunds (sp?) Sorry too lazy to look up actually spelling, a great because they're usually good for apartments and small spaces.

I have a Miniature Pinscher (well, she's my mom's dog), they are usually really loyal dogs. They're not too hard to train. My dog loves to be by the window and she barks if someone comes... things like that. Most toy breeds are yippy little barkers, but they're usually not constantly barking.

I'd recommend staying away from terriers because they need lots of space to run around. Basenji's are good dogs. My mom says that they're not big barkers.

daschunds are perfect. You don't have to walk them too much and they're good with guests. But not around little children.
Don't get chihuahuas because you have to carry them all the time or else they will get a heart attack.

I find poodles really funny. They're cute of course, but I think it's hilarious when they're owners dress them up and put little hair ties and ribbons around it's ears and all

Most of the ones above are good as pets. However, don't get a chihuahua, they can be very annoying.

Aww, I see that dog a lot on the Animal Planet. I believe its more of a medium sized dog though. But if you're really looking for small small dogs, try looking for tea cup sized of toy dogs. (strange names)

Puggles are GREAT dogs.
It's a mix between a pug and a beagle, they are not only cute but they shed very little, have a good demeanor, and are good indoor dogs.

You have to remember that if you get a puppy it is going to chew your shit up and potty in the house.

ohman, whatever you do don't get a terrior. they may be cute but i had one and she barked her ass off day and night, and she was freakin hyper and had to run around all day. i'm pretty sure she was a scottish terrior. yeah, don't get one of those. (:
