Jeez Louise. I don't even know how I got myself into this dilemma. First off, let me state that I didn't even want anybody to know it was my birthday in the first place. It just seems the older I get, I see mine and other peoples' being disapppointments. Curse society's notion to have "so much fun" on your birthday. Damn I just want to get drunk with my homiez, dance with some homegirls & maybe get a number/action. So yeah that's the night I planned out with my friends even though I didn't tell them it was my birthday. But my family knows and wants me to go join them at another thing. Plus, I don't even get along with my sisters anymore so I know I'm going to have to fake it if I make it. Thing is, I'm only one person and can't be at two places at the same time. I can try to do both but I'm pretty sure that someone will feel disappointed in that I don't want to spend time with them. What would you do?

Shouldn't your friends know when your birthday is?

Anyways, be glad your family pays attention to your birthday. Since you obviously knew it was your birthday you should've let your family know that you had plans with your friends. I'd suggest that you talk to your friends and let them know that you have something to do with your family. They should be understanding. You'll just have to reschedule the time that you're hanging out with your friends.

Sorry if this sounds selfish & cold, but I really just want to party with my friends and make it up to the fam bam later. Or possibly just do both things and party the night away. Yep

This is coming from a person who doesn't have close family ties, so my response is drastically different. If you're really 21, then, uh, I see no reason why you are forced to choose with whom you want to spend your time. After about 16-18 years of age, there comes a time when parents learn that their kid doesn't want to be around them for every birthday. I don't think it's right to abandon your family altogether after a certain age, but I don't think celebrating it with your family on your date of birth should be something mandatory. If you want to hang out with your friends rather than family, well, do it? You can't please everyone.

^How did you get to be an Official Member when I got more posts than you? lol

Yeah, I'm 21 today. It's not that it's mandatory, it's just that I feel guilty that I barely spend time with them, that's all. It's my sisters who I no longer get along with and my cousins who I owe a hell of lot to. Even worse is that if I do choose to go with them, I'm just going to go through the motions and be checking on the time so I can get ready to party with my peoples.

Btw, I never told my friends my birthday. Whenever they asked, I just changed the subject.

I don't know, really. Insurmountable messaged me and was all, "Want to be an Official Member?" And I'm all, "Yes," and that's how I became one.

I think I misinterpreted your post, then, as your question was, "who would you rather spend time with?" If I were you, I'd pick friends just because, well, my family has known me long enough. I don't spend that much time with them, either, but they understand that we don't have to be that close with each other.

I hope you had a good birthday, though.

Psh. I didn't know if you were talking about today, as in yesterday, as in a few hours ago. Or technically today, as in the new day. I went with the safe one.

Are you going to treat your friends to a round of alcohol, now that you get that privilege?

I think that's what I'm referred to as around here. The OCD Cleaning Girl. When I drag my tongue across my kitchen floor, it tastes like rainbows. It's been a little over a month since my birthday, so how about that hand sanitizer/cleaning products next year?

But it brings the boys to my yard. I want the original Purell hand sanitizer in bulk, please, when you get your ass into gear and get me something.

I think it smells really funky but if that's the way you like your hands to smell, *shrug. Well, for my birthday, I want... well, I want a lot of things including a haircut, a massage, the world. Ooh I got it!!! I know what you can get me. Get ready for this. For my birthday, I want you as my pen pal. I write really good letters with pretty awesome handwriting, I swear. Plus, I'm also keen on hygiene. I am. Think about it, missy.

I had this same dilemma on my 21st last week but the only difference was spending it with my mom's family and then my dad's family. Needless to say, I spent the day with my mom's family only because I couldn't get in contact with my dad's family at night. Any who, I am celebrating my 21st with my friends tomorrow night. I guess my point would be, that you should always dedicate a small portion of your time to your family as they will be there forever ya know. Friends come and go, but I am definitely looking forward to bugging out and getting drunk with the crew tomorrow.

You spend your 21st birthday with friends.
How many people really want to spend their 21st birthday getting presents at grammas over having a crazy night with friends that you will remember forever (some of it)?

Um. Lets see. Usually when my birthday comes around, I plan a day event with my friends and then have a nice family dinner with my family. In this case, you don't have to do this on the same day. You could always celebrate the time with your friends on a different day and just spend time with your family on your big day. sad.gif I mean...I always think that friends would understand that kinda stuff.

In my opinion, if it's your birthday, you choose who you want to spend it with. It's completely ghastly to me why family or friends get so upset when they are not the chosen few to spend a birthday with.

I faced the fact years ago that my birthday is not at all about my day of birth, it's about pleasing every whiny ass person out there that feels like they need to be "number one." Now, I spend my birthday by myself doing what I want and celebrate with others on a day near my birth date doing whatever it is they think I want to do.

I say birthday should be spent with, first and foremost, your family. After all, your parents gave birth to you and the other family members helped rasied you. Then from there, your friends can join in on the fun.

Or if it really gets to you that much, cut your time in half. Spend one half of your birthday with your family then spend the other half (preferrably night) of the day with your friends, doing as you said, clubbing, drinking and whatnot.
