alright, so if you're walking down the street & you see someone hella tattooed up; what is your first reaction?

examples;
"omg totally awesome!!"
"they're so brave, i'd never be able to do that!"
"they are such an idiot! it's PERMANENT!"
"AH! scary!"

i dunno, what do you think? i personally am amazed & completely admire them. happy.gif

to express themselves perhaps? to have something important to them always with them? i don't know. tattoos are usually pretty meaningful & you could learn a lot about a person. mellow.gif

if you dont have them like on your arms where they can be visible, cool. but if youre showcasing them don't be surprised if people look at you differently. i think tats nowadays are HILARIOUSLY pathetic. really? a gun or words from an emo song will mean anything when you're 40? k

changed. sorry. shrug.gif

& i guess too many tattoos can be kind of over the top at times, but there still are plenty that are extremely intricate & well thought out.

when a person is old & got tattoos when they were young, i'm sure that they would still look at it as being a way of remembering the kind of person they were in the past. sure, people change & tattoos are kind of risky since you might end up hating it a few years later, but normally there is a purpose to getting one/some. the whole tramp stamp & hip bone star/heart/butterfly thing can be considered pretty pointless. But even that could be a 'coming of age, look what i can do' thing that could mean something to the person.

Nah, it just seems like that person has low self esteem to me. I think tats, especially on women, look awful. It is permanent and there's nothing worse than seeing an old guy with 'LIVE FAST' stamped across his knuckles. There's a chap that comes into my store with something similar on his hands. The tat has dulled and the skin wrinkled so much that I can't even make out what the original was about. Ick, no.

Usually, in a situation like that, depending on the person, I'll stop them and ask what their tattoos are, whats the meaning behind them, etc.
Tattoos interest me a lot, I love them.

In my case, it's about how much ink they've got on their bodies. I'm pierced and I'm getting a tattoo when I can afford it. Random snake or whatever tattoos that crawls up the neck or round your body isn't quite goodlooking.

I think it's sad that a lot of you guys don't like tattooed girls. Every tattooed girl I know has turned out to be pretty nice. Including me :)

I think "trend tattoos" are lame. The tramp stamps, belly button circles, barbed wire, tribal arm band, kanji, and hip tattoos are all dumb ideas. If you get a tattoo just because your best friend got one and you want to be cool, you are dumb.

I plan on getting full sleeves after I get set up in my career. Until then, half sleeves, and tattoos everywhere else of course thumbsup.gif

I do hope you realize that almost any professional job will fire you if you have visible tattoos. Now if you're going for something else in another field, or you're starting your own business, feel free to by all means, but they fire you for a reason. Clients are typically weary and find you less approachable with tattoos. I get stares for eyebrow piercings, til they talk to me.

I work in a pharmacy right now, and they have no problems with tattoos or others' piercings. The older people that come in are fascinated by my tattoos. I plan on being a forensic nurse (I will assist in autopsies). I volunteer at my local morgue and they also don't mind my tattoos. I won't really deal with living people in my career, so it doesn't matter if I have tattoos. biggrin.gif

I do agree. Most of the girls I know with tats are cool. My sister has a half sleeve right now.
I think full sleeves on guys are maaad cute. wub.gif

But like Steven said, most places will fire you, or make you cover them up. Especially in 'professional' places.

I don't see anything wrong with tats, as long as they're not random and just to be 'cool' or whatever. I have one of my own which means a lot to me and I plan to get 2 more. Nothing huge or anything, but yeh.

As for when it comes to careers, it depends on the exact profession whether they'll care or not really.

Tattoos are going to be the way of the future. Everyone is going to have them and no business is going to judge you and how it reflects you in your career. That's really shallow, anyway.

I LOVE THAT TETRIS TATTOO. A friend of my has a mario-esque sleeve thing.

Face tattoos... that's one of the only times I see a tattoo and think "my god, you have completely separated yourself from society". I think there is a classy way to get a face tattoo and a crazy one

That is a crazy one.

Well, for me it depends. If they have a couple, I have no problem with it. I plan on getting one later on. However, if they don't have a spare inch or skin thats not inked up, I think that's weird. People then seem unapproachable. _unsure.gif

Personally, I can't see myself getting a tattoo at any point in the forseeable future, part of that is probably because I can't even comprehend what I would get! In all honesty I can't see myself finding one on my own body particularly attractive, but I have absolutely nothing against tattoos in general, and I think they can look completely fabulous on some people, I neither glorify them nor hate them. My housemate has a beautiful, large tattoo that wraps around her calf, and it really suits her. I once very briefly dated a man with tattoos all over his body, and he really suited them.

I do think it's somewhat sad that tattoos are viewed in such a negative way by employers, but at the same time everyone is expected to conform at work by wearing suitable work attire (and therefore look roughly the same), so I don't really understand why people are offended when tattoos aren't an exception to that general rule. I don't know, people seem to take it more personally in the workplace when they're being asked to confirm with their skin than with their clothes. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's necessarily right that in this day and age that tattoos and any "unconvenional" appearances are frowned on at work (that's a whole different topic!), but it's the way things are at this point in time, so getting tattoos in places that are difficult to cover up when you still have plenty of jobs to apply for in the future is a little foolish in my opinion.

QUOTE(avocado @ Nov 1 2007, 05:25 PM) *

I agree with this :) Many people are so concerned about their external apperance that doing anything that may compromise physical attractiveness is often deemed completely ridiculous and insane (how often do you see really extreme reactions to tattoos/cosmetic surgery?). It's only skin, and if what you're doing means something to you then go with it. Nothing is permanent, tattoos can be covered up or removed to some extent, just as your perfect tattoo-free blank canvas could be destroyed if you were involved in an accident tomorrow. When my housemate is old and wrinkly I'm sure she'll look back at her tattoo with fond memories of being in her twenties and won't regret it at all. :)

I think it matters what kind of tatoos they have. I mean if their really neat and something I would ever think of putting on myself then I would think oh how totally awesome! Although if it is something disturbing and something I think is completely stupid that someone would ever want to put on themselves then I kind of think well that was their choice to do something like that shrug.gif

I personally don't see anything wrong with them, I'm not going to look down on someone for having them.

depends on the person and their reasons for having tattoos. some people do it just to be "cool" or fit in or whatever and their ink has no significant personal meaning behind them. i hate when people just pick something off the wall or get lame generic shit like a tribal or nautical star just because it's trendy...

my tatts are very symbolic of who i am and my experiences and beliefs. when people get tatts as a means of self expression and/or as reminders of of their past or life experiences or whatever, then I see nothing wrong with that. i'm intrigued by people with unique tattoos and often ask the meaning/history behind them. you'll find that some tatted up folks have quite interesting stories to tell. :)

although i don't have a tattoo of my own, i find them absolutely intriging. my father has a giant heart tattooed on his ankle with a green ribbon wrapped around it, and it has my name and my sister's name on the ribbon. he also has a pin-up girl customized to look like my mother on the inside of his leg.

i think that tattoos are a great form of self expression. the way i see it, it's their body, they're the ones that have to live with it, so let them do as they please. =]

i'm actually considering getting one.
