So I was in Maryland over the weekend and right when you get past the Potomac river bridge you see this billboard that has 10ft high letters that look like they were spray painted and it read VIRGIN. It pretty much catches your full attention if your driving past it, it seems.

So under it says, teach your kids in not a dirty word.

So do you guys really think the word 'Virgin' is a dirty word? Or have you ever felt like it was? If yes, why?

But sex isn't a bad word. It may be taboo for some people, but not necessarily a bad word.

What was the ad for?

I guess some people view it as "dirty" since it relates to sex.

Yea exactly, thats what I thought of it as. But I remember growing up and some people use to think you weren't cool or whatever if you hadn't had sex yet and young teens just would get all caught up in it and just end up having sex and regret it because they didn't have that part of them to give to someone better shrug.gif

But if you were to say 'She isnt a virgin' I think it would be.

Funny, 'cause virgins are supposed to be pure or represent innocence like Diana mentioned.

Then again, you can make practically word dirty with the right word play.

I'm guessing that these ads are promoting abstinence and that there is a common stigma among young people that there is something "wrong" with you if you're still a virgin after a certain age. They're saying that it's actually okay.

Or something like that mellow.gif

Um, no. Also not a bad word: vagina.

Holly, is Campaign for Our Children an abstinence-only program?

blink.gif No...whether it's good for reputation or not, that doesn't determine whether it's actually good or bad. Personally I wouldn't consider it either, but that has absolutely nothing to do with where I live.

I think its the fact that kids are sometimes pressured NOT to be virgins. I guess it's like saying it's not a bad thing to be a virgin.

^ Agreed

I don't see it as bad, but if it's put into rude context then maybe. It may be a bit taboo, but it's not really that bad

^ (To Kaycee) yeah thats what I said, but i guess people skipped over it. Ya know how like some teens are pressured to have sex because "everyone else is doing it", well I guess they're trying to say its like not a bad thing.

nope its a normal word.

But people tend to stay away from using it, because talking about anything related to sex out loud, in public its kind of "off limits"

Ah, got it. Feeling very slow today. Forgive, forgive.

This reminds me of an exercise my friend told me about when he took Sex-Ed. They had two seniors from this Christian high school came in; one was a cheerleader, the other this tough-looking African-American, and the students had to guess whether they were actual virgins or "born-again virgins". They said they were both virgins, but uh, nobody believed the cheerleader. pooh.gif

I interpreted that billboard to mean that the word virgin may be considored dirtier than, say, a non-virgin and that by teaching children about it's meaning are persuading them to abstain.

That made sense in my head. Eheh.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't think so. I say freely I am one.

People are so ashamed of being a virgin. When I hear that a guy is a virgin and or girl, I respect them in someway.
