Ahh I just felt like ranting about hiccups. I haven't had hiccups in the longest time, and this whole day I kept getting them. So please enlighten me as to why we get hiccups. _smile.gif I know someone told me once before, but I can't remember...heh.

Someone once told me it was either because:

1. You swallowed too much air. It went down the wrong way.

or

2. You ate too much.

I think the first one is more accurate though.

Here's one that might work.

Take a spoonful of sugar.
Eat it.
Drink water.

It'll be gone. It works for me! _smile.gif Yeah, I thin hiccups are when you eat too much. Haha, happens to me all the time.

the longest attack of hiccups in the guinness book of records is 63 years. he just got them one morning, and 63 years later, they stopped miraculously. doctors had no cure for his attack, but this might help u when u get hiccups.

hold ur breath while drinking water mixed with sugar. it works for me!

hiccups can be caused by eating too much, eating too quickly, an irritation in the stomach or throat, or feeling excited or nervous; these all irritate the diaphragm, which causes it to push up in a jerky way, affecting your breath and your voice box. this leaves you with a not-so-lovely hiccup.

yeah, i looked that up. mellow.gif

A really good way to stop them is squat, and gulp down a big mouthful of warm water. My dad uses it on his students all the time and it works :D. (because my dad is a violin teacher, and his students can't play when they have hiccups :D)

You get hiccups from lack of oxygen. It's just your bodies way of telling you that you need to BREATHE more. Yes, go with what Eve said to get rid of them. Works for me.

Get a cup full of water & a straw. with your thumbs hold your nose & with your index fingers press in your ears. Then drink out of the straw as fast (err, as much?) as you can. They'll be gone in no time.. and if it doesn't work, keep trying. That's what gets rid of my hiccups. Then I've also reached as high as I could (as in, reaching for the sky). It's supposed to help (it's never worked for me) because your diaphram is spazzing (or something? blink.gif ) and that's supposed to help. Uhmm I dunno. I haven't had the hiccups in awhile.. knock on wood! wink.gif

I thought it was when you don't get enough air, or something. Because when you laugh really hard you don't have time to breathe. But I could be wrong.

Hahaha, I always get the hiccups at the most embarassing moments.

^ wtf?!? [/spam]

i hate hiccups, i just recently stopped it. i think it is from the lack of air going into your throat, I've choked a little, and started to hiccup. and the only way i get rid of them, is to try not to think about it :D

eidt://I found a site (for kids) about hiccups, and i like to post it up
QUOTE
"Hic!" You've just hiccuped for what seems like the tenth time since you finished your big dinner. Wonder where these funny noises are coming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm (say: die-uh-fram). This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest, and all hiccups start here.

The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. It pulls down when you inhale to help pull air into the lungs, and it pushes up when you exhale to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated, and when this happens, it pushes up in a jerky way that makes your breath come out differently from how it normally does. When this irregular breath hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.

Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or too much, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes. Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or weeks, but this is very unusual, and it's usually a sign of another medical problem.

You've probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid of hiccups, and maybe you've even tried a few. Holding your breath and counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of their hiccups; other people say that drinking from the "wrong" side of a glass of water is the way to become hiccup-free. Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe the most famous treatment - having someone jump out and scare you when you're not expecting it - helps some people wave good-bye to their hiccups.
