QUOTE http://wawa.essortment.com/childrenleashes_rvjf.htm Leashes are not just for dogs: children & safety The automatic assumption of most people when the topics of leashes come up is that a dog must be involved. This is not necessarily true! A growing number of parents are discovering the advantages to “leashing their children.” They find the leashes to not only be an aid in controlling their children, but also a wonderful security feature. With the rise of child abductions and sexual assaults, a potential kidnapper will find the leash an obstacle not worth the effort or risk. Even though child restraints, harnesses and leashes have been used for many years, a stigma is often attached to their use. Mothers who have their child’s well being in mind will often be berated for “treating their poor child as a dog.” Dirty looks, finger pointing and lectures on the supposed trauma being inflicted on the child are common. The fact is these “well meaning” individuals have no concept of the benefits a leash can give. How many times have we all seen a poor toddler going through the zoo or spending the entire day with her arm yanked above her shoulder while a parent grasps her hand? How many times has this same toddler been seen suddenly breaking free of the hold and running out through a crowd or across a parking lot? Leashes can give the child a sense of freedom while providing security at the same time. The child’s leash can be three to six feet in length and used in a variety of situations. A short leash in a grocery store attached to the mother’s wrist allows her to reach for products or read labels without worrying that someone will snatch her child out of the basket. Small child abductions from grocery baskets or strollers are not at all uncommon. An adult with a crying or screaming child is often ignored or looked at with disapproval for not having more control. They are rarely seen as possible child abductors carrying an unwilling victim. Having a child on a leash can also save their lives when in a parking lot. Most small children are not tall enough to be seen by a motorist backing a car out. The result is an injured or dead child, a mother and a motorist who each will bear a lifetime of guilt. The leash can also be a lifesaver when used around bodies of water. The water doesn’t have to be just an ocean or lake. A simple walk down the River Walk area in San Antonio, Texas easily turn into tragedy when a toddler breaks away and falls into the dark murky water. A family fishing excursion to a bayside pier can become a nightmare if a small child falls off and doesn’t have a life vest on. Hmm i checked to see if this had ever been talked about but no, no. Please do D I S C U S S. ![]() Would you ever put YOUR kid on a leash? Do you think this is right? Whats your stand on this. ![]() |

I think it's weird... I used to have one when I was little, because I was really easily distracted and I'd kind of walk away from everyone when I was a toddler. Haha. My mom only used it like.. once, though.

I'm not sure what I think of it.
It seems wrong, but if the child is out of control and it's for their own safety then idk... ![]() I kinda feel bad when I see kids on leashes, seems liek theyre being treated as pets. But i don't really know what to think of it ![]() |

Haha, I had one when I was little. It went around my wrist and my mom's wrist. When I was little, I was almost kidnapped. I don't remember it, though. And I guess my mom thought the best way to ensure that I wouldn't wander off or get taken was to keep me close like that.

If the was acting up, instead of having to beat her, I can just put her on a leash. It's not cruelty, its just a form of discipline/control.

If it was use in the right way to prevent the kids from wandering off into trouble, and getting hurt, then I find nothing wrong with it. I rather have a safe baby on a leash than an injured kid without a leash.

Children are definitely unsafe little things; they can get hurt really easily. If I ever had the slightest doubt, I wouldn't mind using it because it's not like I'm treating my child like a dog or something; I'm just trying to watch out for them. I go to the zoo sometimes and see children running around trying to climb over tiger fences and whatnot, very dangerous.

Those things are old. We had one for my brother when he was little (terrible twos doesn't even begin to describe it. He electrocuted himself when he was alone for 30 seconds). He used to run away in crowds and hide wherever he could. It was kind of necessary.

Those have been around forever. It looks weird but some parents use it as a precaution. I seen kids who still manage to make trouble WITH the leash on. I once watched a kid run repeatedly for this busy intersection. His mom had to keep a firm grip on his hand. A leash would've been handy. |

Looks weird, but it's totally necessary for unruly children. I wouldn't put my kid on a leash unless he absolutely had to have it.

I'd never put my child on a leash..
Even if it was for the best, I'd feel so bad. If the kid is totally out of control, sure a leash may be appropiate but there are other ways of discipline besides treating them like pets. Just my opinion. |

I've seen those wrist-leashes plenty of times. I wouldn't mind wearing one if I were still a kid below first grade. Seriously, though, my worst fear is being kidnapped.
I may use them ("leashes" attached to their hand) for my kids if we're going somewhere with a TON of people where they can easily be lost. |

I think if its just on their wrist or something, thats fine.
So if your somewhere crowded, they cant get lost or wonder off. |

I always laugh when I see a kid on a leash. Poor guy. I saw one of the harness-type ones once, now that's sad.
I don't think I'd ever use a leash. I'd just keep a firm grip on their hand until they knew better. |

![]() My parents never did it though and I turned out fine. I mean sometimes I guess I can see what its best to put a kid on a leash I suppose.. Josh was going to give my little brother a leash for Christmas because he acts like an animal. Oh have you guys seen the cute leashes they make kids now? Their like monkey book bags and the tail is long and its the leash that you attach to the parent XD |

I would never ever use a leash
Its called discipline. If your too wishy wassy to yell at your kid, wacth them 24 seven if your in a crowded area, or beat them if theyre causing problems, go use a leash. leashes are the easiest way to control your kid without making you feel bad. |

Haha, there's nothing wrong with leashes. It's a sure way of keeping speedy little guys under close scrutiny. We had to tie my brother up with one once...

Wtf. Kids aren't dogs. Sure they can find better ways to discipline a kid. But putting them on a leash, wow.

When I was younger, and I lived in England, it was really normal for kids to be on leashes. Even well-behaved children had them. This was when I was like 1 - 2.

If I had a child, I'd never put a leash on it. It seems degrading to me. If my child was acting up, I'd discipline him/her the right way, by teaching them what and what not to do. Putting a leash on a person doesn't seem right to me.

As falsetigerlimbs said, they're pretty common to see here in England and I've never actually thought much of it! |

As falsetigerlimbs said, they're pretty common to see here in England and I've never actually thought much of it! Ah. Well, I don't consider it normal, probably because I don't see it often. But (and this is just my opinion) if a parent can't discipline their child without using a leash, I don't know if they're very capable of being good parents. I know that I was a..."rambunctious" kid when I was young? But my parents taught me how to behave, without using a leash. But oh well. I guess it's a cultural/opinion thing. ![]() I don't mean any offense. |
