Lately, I've been wondering why people use drugs and smoke.

To de-stress?
To make friends?
Just to have fun?
It seemed cool?

If you have tried drugs or cigarettes why do you do it?

If you haven't, why do you think others use them?

Are there any alternatives to using drugs/smoking, that will give a similar outcome? Like say, finding a hobby or joining a club?

I'm seriously just curious. I'm not judging. Nothing harsh please

some people smoke cigarettes to lose weight. it curbs their appetites, i think.

my grandma started smoking in her 30s because of stress and she hasn't stopped since. she's healthy and nearing her 80s to this day. weird, haha.

Perhaps it's just human nature...albeit a twisted version.

I don't smoke, but everyone I know who has done drugs simply does it because, "it feels amazing," as they say. I just think the smell is terrible and I hear the taste is even worse.

The only smoking I have ever done is Hookah, and I did the herbal kind without nicotine. So meh. I just smoked it because I wanted to try it and it doesn't harm your body.

I wouldn't smoke cigarettes though because I don't like the smell.

-Curosity
-To fit in with a group
-To relieve stress
-It seems cool

True, it's good to just wait until you're an adult, with a mature mind and more self control. I realized that high schoolers don't even know the benefits of marijuana, they just smoke it to feel high.

In my case, I only smoke on the weekends. I used to smoke every time before meditating, but I had to learn how to meditate while sober.

i believe that i tried my first drug at the age of...4? i'm not sure, the years are kind of just one big mess right now. :[ and every since that first taste...i've just been hooked. I'm a full blown addict now. I don't even go to meetings. It's so easy to get it, too. It's seems like all i have to do is go to the store.

It isn't just high school kids, college kids do it too. /shrug. But I'm not going to get into a battle with you over cB like you seem to get into with everyone else. stubborn.gif Just saying, I think it is wrong for you to single out only high school kids, since it is not just them.

Plus, I'm not sure about other schools, but my school district has been teaching us about marijuana pretty much every year in health class, so I'm sure people know a lot about the drug, and other drugs.

blink.gif WHAT? Cigarettes makes you gain weight.

It makes it more difficult to exercise because your heart and lungs are less healthy thus making you tire more easily.

You do gain weight after you quit smoking too though because you end up snacking to fulfill your cravings... so it's kind of a lose/lose scenario unless you don't smoke at all. victory.gif

My friends who do pot mostly do it for fun and to escape reality. My town is the absolute most boring hick town you will ever live in. And because it's so boring, people have taken up a profound interest in pot. I mean, I know at least a dozen people who are either sources of the chief leaf or know sources. So ... I guess it's just to get out of the boring every day life.

When I was in highschool I started off smoking just to socialize. I remember my boy, Ryan asked me if I wanted to hit the blunt, and I said sure (I didn't even think twice about it)... I smoked and enjoyed it. Basically everyday, we'd smoke 2-3 blunts. For about 6 years, it was this way.

After high school, a couple years into college I finally started to research marijuana. I stopped smoking everyday, stayed sober for 6 months to let my lungs heal (suggested by scientists, the resin of marijuana is no where near as horrible as the tar from cigarettes/cigars)

As for an education from your government funded school... they'll always slander marijuana and LSD. When the fact is, they're just ignorant. There's scientists, scholars, philosophers, etc... who smoke/drink marijuana.

If you'd like a REAL factual education, go here:
www.mindstates.org/mindstatesvipres.html

It has a bit on marijuana and a quite more on LSD/shrooms. And all of it is legit.

I'm not specifically singling out highschool kids, but from my experience, that's what highschool kids did. They smoked just to feel high. There's more to it than just a feeling. It's a very mental herb.

QUOTE(S-Majere @ Jul 18 2007, 06:35 PM) *
So adults find it easier to stave off addictions than teens?

Uh yeah, it's fact. Children and teens don't have a fully developed brain nor nervous system. An addiction is more than just some chemical or some high you love so much you gotta keep doing it. After so many times of doing whatever it is you do. Your nervous system expects you to do it everytime when ever you think you feel you need to do it.

Example, cigarettes:

It's not just the nicotine that's addicting. It's the movement of the lighter/matches, the fingers grabbing the cigarette, holdin the cigarette between your fingers, the smell of the cigarette before and after it's lit, the inhaling of the smoke, the exhaling of the smoke.

Then you have an addiction in the mind, where most people associate cigs with stress... so everytime something stresses you out, even if it's the most stupidest thing to stress over, your mind will automatically get into the "smoke a cigarette mode" instead of taking care of it naturally with it's own natural chemicals. In which balances your emotions.

So yes, a child and a teen can get addicted a lot more easier than an adult. Because the child's and teen's nervous system and brain is still under developed, both of these crucial parts of our existence will simply find doing something such as smoking cigs, doing drugs, and drinkin alcohol as a norm. As if that's what you're supposed to do for whatever reason you associate it with.

What are the negatives? Didn't you take the time to read the site I linked before? I bet it'll answer every question you have. Specially since the person answering/debunking the questions/myths is a scholar.

Chakra/Mantra

Clairvoyance is my overall goal.

P.S. To get un-addicted. It's simple, stay active. Keep your mind active and keep your actions active. An idle mind is not good at all... you not controlling your mind, means your mind controls you. And your mind is very powerful. But you're more powerful, you just have to realize it. You don't need drugs or an intervention in some building to stop your addiction... you need power over your mind.

I believe the answer is, nicotine speeds up the metabolism. While at the same time it suppresses hunger.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying go to a dealer and buy marijuana. Statistically speaking, over 60% of marijuana in the U.S. has been modified. By pesticides/bug spray, and other dangerous chemicals. It is wise to grow and smoke your own harvest, than to purchase from some middle man who's just out to make a buck.

For example, XTC... used to be 100% MDMA, but now a days, people are using fillers, like asprin, heroin, coke, ephedrine etc... so the xtc is just some cocktail of drugs mixed together which can easily kill someone.

I would never do X again, I'd do pure MDMA but that's even rare.

P.S. Sorry for double post, we really need the delete post option... sucks when we get told not to double post over and over =\

Understandable. I'm a geek - I'd never touch the stuff.

Perhaps it's the conditioning, the scare stories - 'tever. Stuff like that has some adverse effect, like it or not.

Although that site makes a convincing argument, I'm still skeptical. With all the benefits listed, there are also equal downsides. Marijuana makes you sleepier and less able to concentrate, thereby making you incompetent to drive. Although I agree pot isn't nearly as bad as cigarettes, I would never encourage anyone to regularly smoke pot.

Well yeah, I said marijuana is a sleep aid. But have you experienced a high from marijuana? Keep in mind there's over 1,000 different strands of marijuana. There's also people who import it from other countries, sell them to dealers. These dealers know that the half life of marijuana (strength of THC) is pretty low. And that the marijuana will be shittier quality. So as time goes, they tend to spray chemicals onto their product making it "good" (for a crack head who doesn't care about the kind of marijuana, as long as he/she gets his/her high)

I'm not trying to boast or anything, but marijuana helped me graduate highschool. After I got my diploma, I mean when I had it in my hands, and I was in the car goin back home. I told my mom, the last two years of highschool was successful because of something she hates. And she couldn't understand, I told her it was marijuana, I smoked marijuana every morning before school (just a few drags, I didn't want to smoke my head off) and during lunch period.

The high helped me concentrate, you see... marijuana boosts your concentration, all you have to do is focus.
Why do you think marijuana is mentioned when it comes to meditation? Type this on google, "meditation and marijuana"

You'll simply be surprised.

As for the website, there was.. or still is a contest. If you can prove ANY of what is revealed to you on that site to be wrong, you can win $100k but you need to prove it with scientific study.

As for the driving, unless you're so blasted out of your mind high from the highest quality of marijuana in the world, you should be able to drive without a problem. It doesn't mess with your reaction either. Like I said before, do not let your mind idle. Take control of your mind and don't let your mind control you.

Also I would never recommend a child nor teen to smoke marijuana. I would rather them do research and let them decide (not a child, but a teen yes lol). But never would I encourage it. If you ever got into the history of the Native Indians, male's were not allowed to smoke until they were 19 years old. In other parts of the world it was as young as 16.

It just depended on what tribe believed when a boy became fully capable of handling an adult life/responsibilities.

P.S. Till this day, when I smoke... I can't be around elders nor children. I get this guilt and feel shameful because I don't want someone younger than me to think it's alright to smoke anything in general. And I don't want an elder to think I'm some scumbag loser with no life. Cuz generally, that's what most people think of pot smokers.

Oh by the way, I don't know of any negatives, other than munchies (natural reaction when your body tries to regulate itself and delude the THC with food/liquids) and the common allergic reaction to smoke, red eyes.

It's just fun. I don't do it unless I'm with friends, and I'm definitely not addicted to it. Hookah makes me relax, and weed helps w/ boredom oftentimes. I also LOVEEEE it for music. Seriously, that's probably* the best thing about the whole experience: the way the music makes you feel.

You know what's funny?... it makes me wanna go to art museums. It gives me such a deep and odd perspective when I look into the canvas of someone's art work...

I have a secret that I don't mind sharing, since non of you know me personally. But one time, when I went to an art museum, I sat there and analyzed the art in front of me, to the point I actually busted a tear. It was like I felt the emotion that was put into the art work. And my girl was like OMG... you really love art!! I felt kinda embarrassed. Yet, I loved it... because sober I can look at art and see the great design and the effort that was put into it. But never have I felt an emotion from a piece of art. Ever.

Different people have different reasons for doing drugs. I would never smoke pot though. Too many bad experiences with it. My boyfriend smoked pot an awful lot - he ended up getting arrested with it and now he's in rehab. Soooo - I won't ever do it. :]

Tama - I have not had the chance to go into any artistic revelations during my, er, experiences. I will have to try that out during art class sometime, though.

Yeah well you don't live in Katy, do you?

Katy is specifically made for middle-aged folk with small children or retired people looking to settle down and live out the rest of their years. I LIVE RIGHT NEXT TO AN ALZHEIMER'S TREATMENT CENTER.

There is nothing for teenagers to do here.

Wrong.

Because it's the tar that's worst than the resin.

Tar = Cigarette

Resin = Marijuana

Comparing cigarettes to marijuana joints is like comparing apples to oranges... just doesn't work out.

What you could compare with cigarettes is cigars. Now smoking a cigar is like smoking 20 cigarettes.

Also the myth about marijuana puts holes in your brains, that's a lie too. New study shows that they're not holes. In fact they're "patches" of thicker cell wall... average of 300% more thicker than a human who's never smoked before.

This of course isn't bad, because the cell wall is just like a shield. It's between your actual brain and your skull.

Meh, pot aint so bad. I do it a couple times per month, but not very much when I do it, just enough to get a buzz. Getting high can be tricky lol, sometimes once you get the initial high it's hard to stop yourself from smoking more.

Yep. But I'm too stubborn; nobody could have stopped me.

Writing that this morning actually put things into perspective for me. I had never put my progression down in words like that before.

Regarding pot, I agree that it's less dangerous than alcohol in many ways, but the problem is that it's also a gateway drug for a lot of people. Yes, there are many who can stop there and not try any others, but the vast majority of people who are addicted to hard drugs started out with marijuana.

Oh yeah true... marijuana could definitely be a gateway drug. But again so is alcohol (alcohol + prescription drugs).

Marijuana got me curious back in college to try out LSD, shrooms, and XTC. But I never got addicted to them. I enjoyed them and only done them 3-4 times in a a year.

Yeah that's true also, about alcohol. But I think that people tend to say, "Well I smoke pot and I don't touch anything else, so it can't be a gateway drug!" But seriously, if you talk to almost any drug addict, they'll tell you they started out with pot. ;p

LSD, shrooms and ecstasy aren't too addictive. But if you try anything harder than that, you're probably in trouble.

Those f**king stupid ads that schools hang up about pot are so wrong. x_x

Drugs are fine as long as the person using them is a strong person and control themselves. Marijuana is definitely a gateway drug, considering it's so safe, it gives a false sense of security.

Sometimes drugs/alcohol are used as a tool to deal with life. Most of the time those people weren't really taught how to deal with emotions, so that is the only way to do it.

crystal meth is only good if you have no money whatsoever, as it can be created in a small kitchen with even the most beginner's chemical lab set.

heroine is great when i can get it, but hydrocodone is great cause it's about 4x times more potent than heroine.

True, it's good to just wait until you're an adult, with a mature mind and more self control. I realized that high schoolers don't even know the benefits of marijuana, they just smoke it to feel high.

In my case, I only smoke on the weekends. I used to smoke every time before meditating, but I had to learn how to meditate while sober.

people i know smoked cigarettes to be cool when we were underaged. then it was cool to turn 18 and be able to legally buy cigarettes, which they of course tried and got addicted. i tried cigarettes once, didnt like it lol. my boyfriend smokes cigars but i think he enjoys just randomly doing so rather than being addicted.

Our (American) culture makes weed out to be this horrible mystery drug and more funding is put into campaigns against weed more than anything else. Why wouldn't you want to try it after it's been labeled such a taboo? Especially since all those commercials don't really mention any health defects.
Drinking and smoking just because alcohol and ciggarettes are easier to obtain than weed. Because it's there. Because it's viewed as a social norm and people don't see a reason not to. shrug.gif

shrug.gif I have yet to see an anti-cig action, but I've seen commercials, fliers, and heard commercials on the radio all anti-weed. Perhaps I just pay attention to the anti-weed movements.

As lame as it sounds, I think its from peer pressure and wanting to be "cool". I mean think about it, there are better ways to relieve stress than doing drugs but they choose to do drugs just cause it sounds and is riskier.

^Perhaps, of course it sounds like a common answer and reason though.
-shrugs- When I went to public school I hanged out with all the pot heads but I never smoked? I guess I just never cared enough about fitting in.

Have you seriously not seen all those cigarette commercials where it tells you about the chemicals in one cigarette, where it has all the body outlines all over the sidewalks, where it has the guy with the gross teeth, where it tells you that cow milk is worse than a cigarette (in sarcasm)?
